I think one of the biggest problems of OCs is that they usually go on the first draft idea at the top of their head rather than consider just because the first coherent idea they get on paper if at all is the one they're sticking with.
Lots of designs by pros get reconsidered before he final one gets down and that's usually because they put more time, thought and research in terms of what works for the character rather than "It's basically this character but with different colored hair" or some shit like that.
A lot of OCs are either blank slates that are too relateable to the creator or trying so hard to connect with the creator's critics in an attempt to please or offer social commentary in an attempt to be liked and it's a rather shallow attempt from the creator to force acceptance. Instead they need to think about what their character's principles might be that conflict with the audience AS WELL as the creator in order to make them believable and yet make them somewhat worth investing in despite their design not because of it.
