I bought X3: Reunion in the steam sale. What am I in for?
>>
Space trucking.
>>
Honestly, I suggest you get some mods, I never got that much into it, but I can tell you the helmet and cockpit mods are a must, otherwise you just end up a face out in space.

Also I heard that finally got around to fixing all the broken shit with Rebirth between mods and patches. Is it true?
>>
>Reunion
That's the wrong one. You should have bought X3: Terran Conflict or X3: Albion Prelude. They are all very similar but TC and AP have more features and a few flaws from Reunion fixed. Could be worse though, there's always Rebirth if you want to get disappointed.
>>
>>286791042
Man. Oh well. I just got this because I saw "big dumb cool space sim for $4" and I need something to hold me over for a week or so. Thanks for the heads-up.
>>
>>286790132
there was just a thread earlier about tc being free, might wanna look for that.

but for reunion get xtended. everything else is optional.

Reunion? That was a terrible mistake. X3:TC and AP are both straight upgrades in every conceivable way, and even include all of the Reunion content. TC and AP both have 10/10 amazing mods available too. Reunion has some, but not nearly as many nor as high quality.

You can still have fun with Reunion, but I'd honestly recommend just buying AP and playing that instead since it adds much more depth to the game. Consider this a lesson learned in not doing your research before you buy shit.

Just try it, its free weekend after all.

They're different games, cant really be compared.
>>
>>286797182
X3:TC or X3:AP. They're more or less the same game. AP has more mechanics and is more action oriented, but since TC is a few years older it has more mods (though most of the best mods have both a TC and an AP version). If you're only going to get one, I'd get AP, but you should probably have both since they're dirt cheap anyway.

Avoid Stillbirth like the plague, it takes the crown from Reunion for worst X game by a million miles.

What exactly are these games? I don't wanna waste downloading 8gb to find out its something shit.

German space trading+combat+empire building game. People often describe it as single player EVE, but that's not really fair since the combat is actually pretty fun.

I'm not autistic/knowledgeable enough to build my own self sufficient economic empire, but I have loads of fun playing as a bounty hunter/capital-ship-for-hire. One nice thing about it is that you can acquire and pilot/command every single ship in the game, though some might require you to board them or something.
>>
>>286798740
That sounds fun but does it have a massive learning curve? I rarely have time to play games that need a month just to learn the basics plus I'm causal as fuck
>>
So which one is the best one?

I noticed that there were 2 other X games other than stillbirth that came out after X3:TC.

Is TC the ultimate version or are the other newer ones (excluding stillbirth) worth getting?
>>
>>286790132
So, X games are on free weekend, which one is the best one for new player to check?
>>
>>286799307
TC
>>
>>286799129
AP is worth getting.
>>286799043
It has a learning curve but its fairly straight forward, do missions n shit if a station has an icon on it depending on the icon is what mission it has, theres also babbies first stockmarket that you can manipulate to earn your first few millions to make a station, and you can hire the huge capital ships to haul your shit by talking to the captain.

>>286799043
It does. It's not the worst, but it will probably take you a good 8 hours of playing before you really understand everything, and probably a week to actually master something.

You can have fun pretty much as soon as you get over that initial couple-hour learning curve though, depending on what start you pick and what mods you're using. The one big criticism I have for this series is how slow the start is, even for people that already know everything about the game. You'd probably have to invest this entire weekend to get to a point where you have the resources to do things that interest you, unless you used some mods to make it easier. It's worth it though if you have any interest in the genre at all since Elite is empty as fuck and SC isn't even close to released yet.
>>
>>286799129
AP. Less story (not that it matters) but more action.

And it's still not great, but Rebirth is much better since the big 2.0 patch
>>

I haven't tried it since release but i highly doubt even with patches fixing shit its worth playing over just starting a new TC/AP game
>>
>>286799527
What do you mean with more action, simplified and more focus on dog fighting?

I loved Freelancer, is AP closer to that than TC?
>>
>>286800002
There's really no point getting anything other than TC or AP right now. The gameplay is a straight up improvement over everything that came before, the graphics are leagues better, and all of the modders work on the most recent two anyway.
>>
>>286800192
while i totally agree with you, that wasn't my point. Reunion is still straight up better than the previous titles.
>>
>>286800154
In TC, big conflicts were rare (except with mods of course). The central plot of AP involves a huge ongoing war between the Terrans and the Federation, as well as many other more localized conflicts between different races.

What that means is there is a hell of a lot more combat happening everywhere in the universe, more action for every type of ship including dogfighting. It's not in any way simplified, but TC is much more focused on economic empire building and trading than having huge fleet against fleet battles (which only really happened with Kha'ak and rogue AI invasions).
>>
>>286799670
if we're talking content wise, which version is superior?

you remember wrong. it was added in one of the content patches I believe.

>>286800192
No internal station docking, no cockpits. I was pissed when they removed it.
>>
>>286800018
TC/AP is still better by far. But current Rebirth is improved enough that it's worth playing if you're burned out on them

>>286800154
Not simplified at all, but lots of fights. The main plot is very combat-heavy, and there are areas that are constantly in combat.
>>
>>286800531
The only real thing that TC has over AP is the number of story lines. However, as anon mentioned above you can mod those in anyway.

Get AP and mod it to have whatever features you want. The base AP game has more content than the previous games.
>>
>>286800715
Don't you have to have TC to get AP?
>>
>>286800591
>no cockpits
There are countless mods (well, at least 5) that add high quality cockpits to every ship in the game (though there are sadly a lot of repeats in larger ships). See >>286792567, that's me looking left out of the cockpit on my fighter.

I don't know about the internal docking though, I also wish someone would make a mod that lets you dock at friendly capital ships other than your own.

There is something comfy about sitting in a remote sector and directing your merchant fleet remotely.
>>

>>
>>286801458
albion prelude
>>
>>286801283
No matter where I try to build space weed/fuel facilities, the commonwealth navy comes around and blows them up. Where do you guys build them? I've only got a single one surviving simply because the swarm of pirates constantly trading with it blow the fuck out of any attacking fleet.

I'm playing XRM for AP if that makes a difference.
>>
Pro-Tips for beginners:

If you check your sector map and see SHIPS with little Cents next to it, check if it's damaged. Buying that ship, manually repairing it and selling it will yield almost always twice your money. Sometimes the Cent signs are on STATIONS, but more often than not, they are selling sector maps or some other hard quest you most likely cannot complete.

Each race has unique command software to them, getting mid reputation with every race is highly advisable. This includes pirates, though, you don't need to get better rep with them, just change your computer to not signal them as enemies and land on one of their stations.
Attacking a ship sometimes causes the pilot to eject from it, you can then capture the ship. You can also capture the pilot and sell him into slavery.
Have multiple saves and turn on Auto-Save on stations, more often than not you'll die for stupid reasons and you really don't wanna lose any progress

There's an item that let's you save without being docked at a station. It isn't that expensive, so you might wanna keep a couple when you feel you might die but aren't close to any station.
Jumpdrive is of the utmost importance. Get one as soon as you're able to speed up everything and make most missions fairly easier if not trivial.

>M2 = Carrier
>M3 = Slow but heavily armed and shielded small ship
>M4 = Medium speed, mediumly armored and mid shielded small ship

I remember playing lots of X2, i had fun building factories and stuff but the fighting always felt off. very slow paced and shitty, also i didnt had any feelings for the characters or races at all. I always compared it with Freelancer, which is a great game with good characters and a good story but no simulator (just arcade space shooter). I wish freelancer had the depth of X2 in terms of gameplay.
>>
>>286802515
You still missed missile frigates, prototype M3s, and luxury transports, can't remember if there was a special corvette class?

I miss some of the X2 ships, the boron caps with moving tails n bits especially , the teladi carrier that is an aircraft carrier fucking cool, the spooky pirate and xenon ships, starships troopers argon caps
>>
>>286802806
Yeah, there are M4+, M3+, M6+ advanced versions of their respective classes, and frigates are usually divided into M7, M7M and M7C.

The TP are not used often they are all usually referd to as just TP, regardless of subtype.

>tfw not rich enough to afford capships, use a TP+ as a mobile base of operation, controlling squadrons of M3s and M4s.
I dont care if TMs are better in all respects, i just love riding my luxurious yacht.
>>
>>286801539
Dunno about XRM but just look at the factions.

Goners are fine with all stuff, nothing is illegal there so you're good.
Same with Unknown sectors, no police there.
Space weed is legal in Teladi space, dont remember about space fuel.

Just look at what factions forbid what items and avoid from building those things in their sector.

You bulk up after awhile.
>>
>>286805951
Yeah, thats the very basic cycle.

After a while, you start doing that with a bunch of AI-controlled transports, while you can explore the sectors and do missions.
Then you get a bunch of factories and automate your transports. From that point, you can fuck off and do whatever, and just collect profits from your factories from time to time.

When you have a whole bunch of factories you gain loads of money and can afford most ships and then go fight whatever you feel like. Or maybe expand your economy even more so you can get even more ships.

Yeah, I missed a lot of stuff since I was in a hurry to type the post before I left. Mostly I just wanted to correct M0/M1/M2 though, since that's pretty important and I wouldn't want some poor anon getting an M1 thinking he could take on anything with it.

I think AP has some more cool stuff happening (watched a pirate capital ship engage an Argon capital ship), but they aren't a replacement for danger popping up nearly everywhere and watching hostile destroyers in the distance of otherwise safe sectors.
>>
>>286810968
AP is an extension of TC. It changes a few of the sectors, adds stocks and I think a few new ship classes. AP changes a few core Argon sectors into a constant state of war though, so if you're into trading it might be a pain in the ass.

XRM exists for both TC and AP (AP version is better), which is a full overhaul focusing on improving combat. There's also X-Tended mod, which might only be for TC but adds a lot of stuff to explore and has some neat immersion things like semi-emergent galactic news system. Finally there's another big new one that's out for AP called Litcube's Universe. It's supposedly pretty good, but the author is a huge narcissist and asshole.

Anon, did you know:

That it's okay to sit inside of safe space with SETA tuned up to x10 while you walk away for hours, possibly days? Just make sure that you have some sort of Universe Trader/Space Weed complex setup, or else you're just going to waste time!

That every shot against another ship's hull has a chance of ejecting the pilot? The rapid fire laser that you probably don't care about anymore is great if you want to capture enemy ships. All you gotta do is hammer them over and over! Oh, and some pilots won't budge, so don't take it personally if they're just not going to bail.

That you should get a TM ASAP? No, really. TM's are great. You can dock ships inside of a TM! You can put a M5, M4, and M3's in there! So, when you get a jump ship, you have your own little mothership to call your own! All you gotta do is carry around some energy cells, jump in that M5, and now you're ready to explore the universe!

That M7M's are so terribly and utterly broken? Well, it's true!

>>
So I tried Rebirth. This shit isn't as bad as you fags keep saying it is. I'm still not buying it but it was enjoyable enough. No shits given that I can only pilot one ship.
>>
Download the Xtended mod.
Terran conflict is pretty much that mod made official and some other things.
>>
>>286814035
XRM sounds pretty cool, I might get it myself. I'm not that far in yet anyway, just been trading a bit.
>>
>>286813757
Man, if I wanted to play a game where I couldn't see anything but the HUD, i'd just play an unpatched Supreme Commander.
>>
>>286812335
the Khaak M3-5s that XRM adds are actually pretty powerfull.
Too bad they suddently become useless when you get one as they wont stop crashing into everything
>>
>>286814369
Tru dat. Most people sit around in a pirate Nova until they graduate up to a Hyperion.
>>
>>286814975
That's a big cargo vessel, I'd imagine combat ships have smaller cockpits.
>>
>>286814975
Yeah, I hate that cockpit he's got there. The XRM one I use doesn't have any obtrusive ones like that except for >>286814035, but as a result it suffers from only having like 30 total cockpits for some 100+ ship models.

>>286814965
I wholeheartedly recommend XRM only if your computer can handle it, it's very script heavy. Litcube's Universe is better for lower-end computers since most of the code is rewritten from scratch to be more efficient in that mod.
>>

>XRM Kha'ak ships
How the fuck do you arm those things? I can never find the appropriate Kyon emitters in any decent quantity. I captured one of their carriers once but it had to go unarmed since I couldn't find any of those giant lasers.
>>
>>286815317
Well I've had no problems at all running AP on max settings so far, I'll download it and try it out.

Personally speaking, if you were into immersion, you'd be playing X2 and skipping all of the cutscenes.
>>
>>286815175
Also the hacker chip is so much fun to use
I managed to capture a lot of Khaak M1s and M2s when I discovered that they have a huge blind spot behind them, or even inside them in the case of the old khaak ships

It grates on you after a while.
There's still a lot of prevalent issues that most X games have, but with the Teladi Outpost, things have gotten slightly less bad.
>>
>>286815932
I can't ever get that to work. I once spent 8 hours trying to capture a Kha'ak advanced M6, used over 200 hackerchips and didn't get it. It just fails over and over, and it's hard to keep a ship's shields down without outright destroying it unless you have a beam weapon since the moment you stop shooting the shields will go over the 10% threshhold.

How do I get gud at hacking?
>>
>>286799732
sure bitch, show me what you got.
>>
>>286815973
I thought you were limited to that tiny shitty M6 ship? How are you on a capital ship bridge?

Dun Goofed. Bought the wrong X3.
>>
>>286816260
You can go aboard your cap and freighter ships now and command them. It's not too good because commanding ships is really nonintuitive.
You can also change up the cockpit for your M6, and since you don't really see anything else besides the cockpit, it's not TOO bad.
After a while you do want something better though, the thing is expected to take down fleets when it can barely hold its own against other fighters.
>>
>>286815539
Capture more M1/M2
You can also savescum just before capturing them, the loot is randomized at the instant you get the ship

Are you sure you're playing the same game? Freelancer is babby's first space sim.

Yeah, so imagine how much worse Rebirth is.
It's like they tried to make it Freelancer without understanding anything of what made Freelancer fun.

I'm thankful for the free weekend since I've always wanted to try these games. I now know they're not for me since its far too complicated. Is there even a tutorial to this game? I just got plonked in space with not even a hint on what the fuck to do.
>>
>>286816837
There's a shitty tutorial, you have to talk to another ship in your starting sector to begin it. He'll have a white lightbulb next to his name.

Hit ".", find the ship I mentioned, click it, and then press "c" to open comms.

If you can get past the initial learning curve the game is great.
>>
>>286816138
Honestly the best ship to use for hacking is the Khaak advanced M6, as it's fast as fuck, has the best shield of any M6s and you can easely tune the damage you deal due to the laser they use to keep the ship's shields down without destroying them

It's been a long time, but if I remember correctly there are weapons that deal damages mostly to systems like weapons and all. Your best bet is to find an isolated advanced M6 (it's easier with the bounty hunter licence), manage to destroy all its weapons and them hack it until the ship is yours.
Once it's done, you'll have far less trouble hacking other ships

>>286818332
Also your hacking chances increase the lower the ship's hull is
Getting it to 5% would drastically increase your chances, and you can just repair it in EVA anyway
Just be sure that it's really isolated, I lost many ships I was about to get just because a fucking M2 decided it would be fun to shoot missiles at it just before completing the hack
>>
X3's a good game, if you have the free time to get guts deep in a trading simulator.

Expect to spend a lot of time in autopilot and time acceleration. Auto-trader modules for your spare ships is a good investment.

What's your PC? i7 4550k and GTX 770 4gb here and my pics above ran perfectly smoothly at 60fps. Battles are more CPU heavy than they are GPU heavy due to all the scripts.

Does anyone have a list of essential X3: TC mods?
>>
>>286815317
Got XRM installed and working, looks nice so far. I'll be spending the weekend space jewing.
>>
>>286821220
2500k and 680 2 GB. I think I used too many mods last time, gonna use much less this time.
>>
>>286821794
Be VERY afraid of capital ships unless you're in a dedicated M7/M2.
>>
>>286821531
the only mod ive tried was a cockpit mod. it looked kind of tacky and occluded vision so i disabled it.

im interested in a good list too
>>
While we're talking about space games and autism, who /aurora/ here?

The game has all the visual charm of an Excel spreadsheet but it's almost as much FUN as Dorf Fort.
