Looks good.
How long until their next presentation?

looks neat! excited to see some games released now that their engine is up and working.

Hard to see details with such a shitty video but looks pretty cool. Hopefully some direct-feed video will come out soon.
>>
I just thought of something: Why would they put a spoiler alert on a tech demo.
>>
>>285672936
Because it's from Portal 3?
>>
>>285672193
>>285672193
Seem to be some improvements in lighting in specularity.

I like that they aren't obsessed with visual fidelity.
Seems like a progression of the visual style of source filmmaker and portal 2.

Since they've apparently made lots of improvements to their physics engine, I'd like to see what it can do.
If they want to compete with UE4, they're going to need a major jump in their animation system as well include physics based animations and the like.

>>285672936
because they're about to herd you outside into ridiculously long lines to try it out
>>
>>285672936
Shows portal 2 character, Wheatley. Also, it was only a small part of the segment recorded, so there was probably more than just that.
>>
Looks better than i expected, for some reason i expected source graphics because im retarded.
>>
>>285672193

Yes/Okay
>>
As long as it ushers us in a new age of source mods then i'm okay with that.
Dystopia on Source 2 when?
>>
>all this work on an engine they will never make original games for
>>
What does it specifically target? I don't see why anyone would choose this over UE4 for example. Valve promises a better Hammer but they can easily not deliver while UE4 is clearly better than UE3 and people have hands on already.
>>
>>285673549
Better graphical quality than Source while still running on toasters.

Presumably very very sturdy/advanced physics engine.
Their focus on physics might suggest some really unique/impressive physics based animation stuff.
"Engine oriented around ease of content creation."

Are all video games going to be based around Oculus and Hydra from now on?

I really hope not. Those are neat novelties, but especially in terms of motion control, I have no interest in them until they can somehow replicate real force feedback. If my character and I both swing a sword, and his sword bounces off the enemy armor, while my arm keeps going because there's no armor in real life, all the hand-tracking in the world isn't going to make me feel immersed.
>>
>>285674353
One step at a time brother.
Immersion comes one step at a time.

Does seem like their will be native VR support for all Source 2 games, though obviously they can't expect everybody to buy in.
>>
Since no one is saying it, I will:

Source 2 Film Maker porn when?
>>
>>285674353
I'm imagining a system where you step into a sort of metal "skeleton" (think exo-suit) that provides you the feedback you need using hydraulics. Step into skeleton on one of those omnidirectional treadmills, apply VR goggles, play.

It's either going to be a super-advanced version of that, or jacking into your brain directly.
>>
I honestly don't give a shit. Nothing in that video excites me.
>>
UDK/ Unreal / Unity guy here, how is it working with Source? From a gui perspective how different is it from a primarily 3D animation workflow ?
>>
>>285672193
Pretty tepid next to UE4, motion controls are just gimmicks next to kb+mouse and I don't see the point in Valve getting involved with hardware when they already have trouble shipping software in a timely manner.
>>
>>285674891
I'm ready for my invasive brain surgery for the sake of video games

Bruh I'd only be in real life to pay for my virtual one.
>>
>>285674353
Hell no. AAA games can barely be called optimized for PC, so no way will we get widespread VR support for a few years.

I really want to see how this works in a multiplayer environment, because otherwise I don't see the investment as a consumer in a tech demo machine.
>>
Looks neat. Have they given any indication of when Source 2 is going to drop?
>>
I'm having high hopes about the whole thing.
A week ago I was convinced that Valve was done with games that wasn't free to play
Within two days I saw new footage in source 2. Even if they don't show any games at GDC. We got more than we've had for 3 years
>>
>>285674353
Wait, Hydra is still a thing? I thought that Clank made apparent that it's not going anywhere.
>>
>>285676640
It's still a thing, but it's not going anywhere
>>
Are we sure that was Source 2 though ? All of that could have been done with source 1

Are there any laws that prohibit video games from inflicting pain or injury on a consenting player
Is that the kind of thing you can just lawyer away with user agreements
>>
Just a demo using Portal assets/thematic

I wouldn't consider it a new game or anything like that
>>
>>285679285

That's a common misconception in the layman eyes.

Even if there isn't a specific law dictating something, it doesn't mean that said situation cannot be appreciated by the law. In fact, the judge simply CANNOT let go of his duty under allegations of inexistence of legislation because that goes against his job as the one who should measure all things and give us the "right". Also, there are other sources of rights other than written law itself and in this case the manufacturer of the product/game would be considered as fully aware of the risks of injury and death caused by their creations, since they made it clearly possible, and thus be held responsible for any consequences of such nature whatsoever.

And no, you can't lawyer it away because you cannot dispose of your life as you would dispose of an item in your possession. The constitution and the law overrules said agreements.

It's literally a demo to show off the engine
>>
>>285679859
>It's literally a demo to show off the engine
Right, but they have a long history of "tech demos" being snippets of games they're developing; look at the first time we saw HL2.
>>
>>285672193

Yeah yeah, great, just what we needed: another tool for men to create and molest women by making their rape fantasies real and thus reinforcing misogyny and forever perpetuating rape culture.

Excellent.

Not.
>>
>>285679828
>you cannot dispose of your life as you would dispose of an item in your possession.
Wow, gay
Next you'll tell me it's illegal to barter with my soul or something
>>
Why are people judging the graphics based off one tech demo? Obviously the engine has to have certain features, so you can judge off of that, but most stuff related to graphics is based off the people making the game.

Also, someone already said there isn't a Portal 3.
>>
>>285679937

I don't believe anything about legacy or habits when Valve is concerned, they changed from a videogame developer to a service provider and radically changed their business philosophy over the years

I don't expect it to be a sign of a new game in the pipes
>>
>>285672193
These HMDs with tracking seem like they will be great for 3D modeling.
>>
>>285674353
FYI, with a clever system of internal weights, spinning disks and vibrators, you could physically wrench the player's grasp in different directions as a type of force feedback.

You ever held a spun-up HD in your hand while its still spinning? Think that, but more directed.
>>
>>285680192
They've always done what interests them as individuals, and for better or for worse, that's what we're going to see keep happening. Admittedly it means long dry spells when they're working on something that's entertaining subjectively, like for example I haven't played any Dota 2 and very little CS:GO, but on the flipside- we had a lovely period where they were putting out tf2 maps, portal 2 content, releasing forgotten gems like Alien Swarm for free, etc.
