Chousoujuu Mecha MG on DS is pretty cool and honestly has some of the best touch screen use I've seen. Every robot has its own unique control panel on the touch screen. It's only in Japanese, but pretty import friendly.

It's developed by Sandlot, the same developers as Robot Alchemic Drive and Earth Defense Force.

The very best, most traditional Armored Core game is Silent Line. Newcomers might not like it however seeing how the control scheme is couple of generations old.

Armored Core Last Raven is basically classic Armored Core but with a newer control scheme. Having best of both worlds. It's fucking hard though so I can't fully recommend that either. It's mostly there as a love letter to the hardcore fans of the series seeing how it was the last game on the ps2 era.

Armored Core For Answer is the best newer gen AC game. Easier to get into and focuses on fast paced action, so you might wanna try that first.

Avoid V and to some extent VD like the plague.

For traditional Armored Core, which was more of a simulation than an action game, Silent Line is immaculate, putting you in a intricate and elaborate pilot seat of a lumbering mechanoid.

For a hybrid of the old style and newer, faster paced style, Last Raven is my all-time favorite. Hard as nails and incorporating faster paced gameplay while still expecting you to manage just as much after playing the old games for years, it feels like you're finally an ace pilot, pushing your machine to a whole new skillset.

For modern games, the fanbase is divided. Some prefer 4/4answer's complete balls-to-the-wall speed and agility, but in my opinion it comes off as far too much like a (modern) anime mecha fight and that just doesn't appeal to me at all. I can see why dodging and outrunning missiles and laser-jousting would appeal to some, but it's just not Armored Core anymore. On the other hand, V/Verdict Day plays much slower, with your acrobatics being limited to the environment you find yourself in and having a much greater focus on slower and more methodical gameplay, kicking off buildings to get speed boosts and popping around corners to take potshots. However, the game is structured to be multiplayer focused with a territory control system and very few (unique) single player missions available. Still, I personally prefer it just due to how it plays, and wholly recommend V over 4.

>I remember when everyone shat on 4 and FA for being nothing like previous core games

I took it as a refreshing change of pace. I still do very much prefer the older ones though. However I see 4/FA as a separate game with its own charms and appeal. That's why I recommend it to newer, more casual audience.

V was outright horrible and while VD fixed a lot of shit it was still mediocre in comparison. People hate on it because they discarded the already good reboot.
>>
>>285631143
The same can be said for fans of any series.
>>
>>285631143

The modern Armored Core fanbase doesn't know what it wants. I personally hated FA as an AC game despite enjoying it overall, but VD was a return to form that made my dick rock hard. It seemed like VD should have been the stepping stone between Last Raven and FA in terms of gameplay progression, but whatevs. I'm just happy with the down and dirty style of VD. (There's probably a rimshot about STDs in that statement)

It did, which I really appreciate. Slowing the game back down a bit and making the action a little more relatively plausible made it feel like the real world again, a feeling I got from older AC and Chromehounds. To me, 4 and FA felt like a completely other series and the GOTTAGOFAST gameplay didn't appeal to me at all, making there only be one viable build style on the high end.

Mech is a robot piloted by a human which is required by law to destroy 90% of what it is trying to protect. I am certain this applies to Fencers.

There is no universally agreed upon definition for mech, so we are both right. what matters is that it provides an enjoyable mech-like experience

I love SRW. I really do. Sunk hundreds of hours just into the GBA Original Generation games, much less all the hours slogging through pseudo-translated fan patches back in the day. But they're not really mech games, just strategy RPGs that happens to star mechs.

Aww man, I'd totally forgotten about Front Mission. Man, FM3 was my /childhood/.

See, now that's a mech sRPG. Even though the gameplay doesn't actually put you in control of the robot, all of the mechanics are tweaked in a way that creates a facsimile of robotic warfare. Regional damage, movement speed affected by turns, just blowing the pilot inside away, UNF my dick. That qualifies against what I said here >>285640476
>>
>>285640794

None of the mechanics in the game are indicative of piloting a giant robot. It's mechanically a reskin of a generic strategy RPG; you could swap out every robot for the pilot inside it and the game would make just as much sense.

I love SRW, but it's just an sRPG with gratuitous roboporn, which isn't inherently a bad thing.

Compare SRW and Front Mission.

SRW, you just control the units on the map; move them within their movement range, use borderline magic skills, choose their attacks from a list, and monitor blanket HP values. If you put a medieval skin on it, it's just any sRPG with less equipment options.

FM, you control facsimiles of robots. You build them from the ground up, outfit them within their tolerance, min-max their mobility options with jump jets and skates, and then finally attempt to blow the arms off your opponent or punch their cockpit in or whatever.

I love SRW, but it' just an sRPG with mechs, not a mech game. There's nuances to genre beyond "it has X so it's an X game."

I understand that, and I don't hold SRW's formula against it. It's not an insult to call it "just an sRPG"; it's a very well made sRPG that nails the basics of its genre and wraps it all in polish and love. Regardless, the actual mech mechanics are borderline nonexistent, and shouldn't be used to define the game since it's purely aesthetic.

>>285644391

It only looks like a mech game. The connection to being a mech game is wholly cosmetic and shouldn't be used to define the game at all. If a band played a type of music but used the image of another type of music - for instance, played country but dressed like black metal - would you say they played black metal?

There was a great DS port released a few years back of the very first game and localized to English. It's pretty brutal, but it has great atmosphere and all the hallmarks of the series in place.

2's a wash. No easy way to play it, unless there's been a fan patch I'm unaware of.

3's as easy to emulate as any other PS1 game. PSP may be able to emulate it now without the numerous gamebreaking freezes, haven't kept up with CFW after getting a PC that can emulate the PS1. One of its most interesting features is its intricate and fully realized depiction of digital communication in the era the game was made, including a branching and elaborate tangle of websites and encrypted files you can peruse for additional information and secret bonuses if you're a 1337 enough hacker. Great game, my favorite in the series, but a lot of that's probably nostalgia.

4 is (was, at least; I have to keep qualifying all my statements in this post, don't I?) a total bargain binner, so getting it and just playing it regularly on a PS2 is probably the easiest option. It's not bad by any stretch, but just is a letdown after 3.

5's, unfortunately, another wash. Square didn't give us this one, but we got.. Evolve. Ugh. Thanks. Maybe there's a fan patch out there for this one.

Evolve is the fucking devil. A shitty Front Mission and a shitty mech game in general compared to Armored Core. Fuck Square and everybody on their payroll.

Oh yeah, right, I /totally/ forgot PSN existed. Yeah yeah, that's totally an option, especially for 4.

Always love to get someone excited about forgotten old mech stuff. The modern depiction of mechs really doesn't do it for me, but the 80's and 90's really bullseyed where I like it.

I tried to find a gif or webm of Black Getter's cockpit opening to post in turn, but google let me down. Have a bonkers vector instead.

Mech games used to b prolific because they reflected mecha anime's prominence in Japan at the time, our source of vidya in that time. As mecha has waned in anime over the years (not dead, but not nearly the highlight it used to be) it's also waned in videogames.

Modern mecha anime is usually pretty garbage anyway, so I don't miss it. Rather not have it at all than have it and be crap.

It has, but I just have a general distaste for modern mecha. (Gundam Unicorn was the only thing I've really enjoyed since Gurren-Lagann.) Like I said, it's not dead. But during the late 80's and 90's, when mecha anime was at its zenith, it was almost easier to make a list of shows/movies not featuring robots.

It was good, but felt unfinished, like they couldn't get their hands on the budget they wanted. Good, but doesn't compare to the hilights of TTGL and Unicorn.

>>285649818

SKL was interesting, but just an experiment. Nothing of real substance worth using it as a genre tentpole. Wasn't a fan of the titular robot, but the pilots and 90's homage plot carried it fairly well.

Never watched Demonbane by choice. It just seems kind of goofy. Don't have a lot to say about this one, so I honestly might be missing out, but the premise just doesn't appeal to me.

As for Shin Mazinger, >>285650119

I.. honestly don't even know what Linebarrel is. I don't keep up with anime in general like I used to, and figure "If I hear about it outside of /a/ or /m/, it must be worth checking out." I got real burned out on anime in general a few years ago and have kind'a checked out. I'll totes admit I'm no authority on the overall state of it nowadays, but I know it got bad enough for me to stop actively pursuing it, which bodes pretty ill.

>>285650139

>>285650338

Yes. Absolutely loved it. Validated my love of UC and my childhood spent with it (plus made ZZ officially worth watching retroactively just to understand Unicorn). It didn't suffer the same way CCA did, being crushed into a movie with no time to properly set itself up for an emotional payoff.

Only read the first volume or ORIGIN, also waiting for it to be complete, and it seems like a very interesting retelling. Looking forward to finishing it when it does.

ZZ wasn't a bad series, but it was a bad UC Gundam series. We'd just come off the increasingly human and melancholic Zeta and are thrust into a quirky cast of characters with a plot that doesn't really mean anything until the home stretch.

Not a bad series, but the worst proper UC series. It's not a meme if it's founded.

And I mean, shit, I even said it's worth watching now. It was totally possible to skip ZZ and go straight to CCA just by reading a synopsis of ZZ, but to appreciate Unicorn you have to be familiar with the arcs and emotional take-aways from ZZ.

You're not, and as I've said before, it was my absolute favorite Front Mission. It was able to strike a perfect balance of the older simulation gameplay with a faster pace that really made you feel accomplished when you hit the sweetspot. It was, however, total bullshit hard at times, but that was part of why I liked it; it forced you to get better as a player and stop relying on upgrades.

>>285651976

There's nothing inherently wrong with Victory, but it's set so far in UC's future that it can't retain any real emotional link to the UC Trilogy (which, in light of Unicorn, could really be the Tertalogy nowadays). I like its gimmicks and the general tone, even if it was a little goofy at times, but it feels more like a spin off than a UC entry. Kind of the same feeling 0083 gives, y'know? Where it feels like the same universe, but tonally disconnected from the universe its in.

overall, extremely customizable, with some games going into autistic detail. In 4 you can change your head, torso, legs, arms, cpu, generator, and i think up to 4 weapons, then can fine tune your balance with something like two sets of weights per part, then further customize your stats with some point distribution mechanic, and there are literally thousands of parts to choose from.

>>
>>285653372

Who was the better protagonist is debatable, but I personally feel that Bangarang was a more realized character. He seemed confused and scared and like he was masking it all under a veneer of confidence, which every Gundam pilot really boils down to at some point, but like I said it's kind'a a subjective thing there. "Who can you identify with more?" is the crux of the comparison.

>>285653532

I'm definitely into half of that, and at this point Demonbane comes up in mecha conversation so much I really should inform myself. The art direction's kind of a turn off, both the CGI and mechanical design itself, but maybe it'll grow on me after a bit. I'll at least give it a shot some time soon.
