VR is quickly becoming a red ocean market though so I'm not surprised. They would have notice of everyone jumping in the VR game since Win 10 is being built with VR in mind.

no, that's not the problem. It completely fucks with your eyes after a couple hours. I have an oculus DK2 I used for my final project at uni and I never touch the thing outside the odd game of elite.

also it's a gimmick in that it's completely useless unless your game is in first person. Making your character walk forward completely fucks with you as well cause your actual physical body is stationary.

People are only hype for this cause a consumer model of any headset is not yet out. Once people waste their money and get hands on the fad will die quicker than it came.

Gaben and some other industry guys are going to be discussing the latest attempt at getting the industry to use OpenGL. Can't remember if its called NextGL or OpenGL Next or whatever, but that's what they'll discuss.

It'll likely cover some major points of optimization, support for different platforms, support for this VR headset, integration with steam, open-source integration options, etc etc.

I have more doubts that any big Valve game will even be announced, I bet we'll just see Source 2 ports of all their current lineup. That said, seeing Source 2 and whatever tools it has bundled with it should be exciting enough. Just don't expect HL3. IF they show it, it'll be nothing but a teaser.

>>only good for fps
But that's wrong. There's no reason you shouldn't be able to control a dude in third person. There are already a couple of games that do that.
You just can't directly port existing third person games into VR and expect it to work well.

Depends on what you want to do.

Gear VR has a higher resolution, so less of a screen door effect. However, you have the downside of only being able to utilize the power of a Note 4 to render graphics. For watching movies and new native VR video content, Gear VR is superior simply because of the resolution. The user interface software is nice as fuck and everything "just werks'. If you like portability and not having to deal with cords, Gear VR is also the way to go.

DK2 is the powerhouse, simply because it relies on desktop hardware to run. While the DK2 and Gear VR both have headtracking, the DK2 has positional tracking along side it. This allows you to do things like lean forward and to the side in the virtual world. Only headtracking is possible in GearVR, so wildly leaning around can cause motion sickness.

DK2 is most certainly not user friendly. It's a dev kit, and a pain in the ass to get a lot of content working. However, as more and more content comes out, the user friendliness seems to come along with it. The "Virtual Desktop" app is simply fantastic and allows you to do all of your computing within a virtual space, making things much easier to set up than previously.

I'm personally excited for Nvidia's VR HMD announcement next week. I am assuming it will be a mobile device like Gear VR that will utilize their new Tegra X1 mobile gpu. Depending on the performance, we could see a mobile VR device that outweighs the pros of having a desktop locked VR HMD.

Instead of scanning for people, the headscan scans the entire room. The walls don't move, so as long as you are indoors the headset knows your exact location. This also means the headset can show your souroundings and where the walls and furniture are...

Which mean you are NOT restricted to a seated experience! This is key, if this works Valve is going to make Oculus obsolete before it even comes out.

They sure are pushing VR pretty hard. I don't think it will do much for the slump in the video game market, people are just tired of vidiya right now, I think they're damning a good concept to failure because they're going to release it at a shitty time.

And I don't think it will make people buy more video games either.

Of course it's no good for fast-paced FPS. Anyone who claims that is a moron.
But there's a whole range of other things you should be able to do with it. Like a sort of "fixed-camera" third person thing, think Resident Evil, only instead of a fixed camera you've got a fixed position for you. Make your character walk through a door, and you get a brief fade to black during which you are teleported into your position in the next room.
Or have a setup where you automatically fly after your character. This is probably hard to get right, and it might require putting your POV into some kind of "vehicle", but I think it should be doable.

>>
>>285182565
Sony doesn't have any software lined up for it. They haven't announced if they're even going to release the product. Morpheus is also already dead in the water because it's tied to PS4. That means you would have to watch all your content through that with the limitations of the hardware forever.
