Now that the west coast port strikes are over, I think NOA is just waiting for the 2DS to sell more units, so it can eventually be discontinued. That and the fact that the OG 3DS is basically nonexistent at this point.
If NOA were to bring it over, I think they will wait to launch it in May or this summer. Also, fuck NOA.
If they release it now it'll just seem like a downgrade of the xl. They won't be able to market it with "bigger screen!" And "longer battery life".

The customization would be a major selling point. Its actually silly that they didn't release it for that very reason. I might consider getting a new 3ds if the smaller one were available but the xl just isn't appealing to me.
Maybe they didn't make the regular so they could sell more exclusive 3ds units with every game released.

They're hoping that buy releasing a new LE NXL that looks cool that people will have consumer regret and either buy the new one, or trade in the old one to get a new one.

This is why amiibos are so rare and temperamental with release dates in the us as compared to EU where everything's fine with this stuff.
