Is this the darkest video game of all time? I can't imagine it getting much darker than an AI we created destroying all life on Earth with the exception of 5 individuals who he chooses to imprison, torture, mutilate and put into simulations specifically tailored to their personal deepest fears and weaknesses
>>
Nah, pretty sure it's Doom 3.

One of them, there's quite a few that could take that title
>>
>>284694604
Really creepy/immersive old-ass PC adventure game based on a sci-fi-apocalyptic short story of the same name which is also a really quick and interesting read: I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream. The devs of the game actually got the story's writer to do the script for the game so it's pretty awesome
>>
Darkest? Not sure about that, but it's a great game.
>>
>>284694904
Literally yes.
It's based on a short story written in the 60s.
>>
>>284694997

Oh come on dude, the ending was fucked up but that was it. That's dumb of you
>>
>>284695090
And I Have No Mouth had a level where one of the characters was in a fantasy land deciding who to fuck.

>>284694782

Thanks. I wouldn't have thought a game would be called that.

Looks...disturbing.
>>
>>284693981
Harlan Ellison is a creepy dude
Feels like AM is his self-insert in that game
>>
And a whole chapter devoted to the holocaust, another to rape, another to cannibalism, yea, I don't know any that is worse. Especially because it is very individual and personal, and realistic. Plenty of stories and games include very grotesque things, but always at an impersonal distance.
>>
>>284695207

And? Point? I'm just saying that game is no where near the darkest of all time
>>
>there are people who haven't heard of IHNMAIMS

Seriously?
>>
>>284695301
My point is that the story is far more darker. The game is just a watered down version, even having a good ending where humanity is saved.

You can't save the girl in Witch's House.
>>
The idea of being locked in your own body is already scary enough, let alone as the last alive "human" on the planet, permanently being tortured by someone that hates you and has the ability to keep you alive. Scariest thing imaginable.
>>
>>284695250
>implying the concept of AM isn't becoming more believable by the day
>>
>>284695250
Harlan Ellison's actually fucking based, but yeah, he went the full mile and did the audiobook and voiced AM in the game.

He's a pretty amazing voice actor, shame he never pursued a career in that.
>>
>>284695421

Come at me.
>>
>>284695696

It's pretty popular among sci-fi circles.
>>
>>284695851
I hate them too, but I can still recognize one of the most well-known games in the genre.
>>
>>284695470
>You can't save the girl in Witch's House.

But the overall themes in IHNMAIMS are way darker, dude. The Witch's House only has a little twist that is a bit sad, but that's it.

I Have No Mouth is a game that came out of the mind of a person who grew up in the generations right after the second world war ended, and the amount of heinous shit we've done in the Twentieth century broke a lot of people.

You cannot possibly imply that a sick girl who tricks her friend into switching bodies and never reverses the deal is more depressing than a game that touches on rape, narcissism, holocaust, nuclear war, and the scary as fuck implications of how a human mind would react to being made immortal and live forever in what's essentially a cage.

Certainly not the bleakest, and pretty upbeat in a lot of places. But by the end of the game, the best you can hope for is that Earth might heal the damage and support life again one day in the future.

Also, if you let Dan die, Iji has a mental breakdown and pretends he's still alive

The setting of Kult is kinda supposed to be like in mind of a severe paranoid schizophrenic person except the insanity is reality and the real world is a fabrication.

The victory condition is assuming your true form that is some kind of cosmic horror and becoming so out of touch with the life you thought you had that you stop being you.

I'm looking for help finding a game I played briefly as a kid. It was a PC adventure game, around the time King's Quest V came out I believe, where you were working with a time limit. It has some heavy themes, but there's more to dark feelings than just death. Hell, the perpspective MM puts death in reminds me of how it's just a part of life.

>Mikau collapsing, giving his final testament in his dying breath

Man i spent so much time on this game.
I can see how it may not appeal to most of the people though, what really kept me playing is the excitement to find something new.
The uboa switch is kinda bullshit though( 1.5% chance to see him on the first time).
People who found him without knowing about him probably shitted their lives though.
>>
>>284712869
Romani gets attacked by ayy lmaos, and then gets mindbroken if she gets kidnapped, and Cremia gets assaulted by highwaymen. On the third day Cremia gets Romani drunk so that she dies painlessly.

Not that that makes it exceptionally "dark."

On the last night of the older sister gets her younger sister shit faced so she doesn't know whats going on as the world ends under the guise of 'hey you're going to be an adult soon, so lets do something adult while we still have the chance', and then she crawls into bed with her, holds her tight and waits to die.

Unlike the short story that the game is based on, the game actually has a happy ending. You end up defeating AM and reawakening the people on the moon.

If you fail the invasion on purpose but return to the ranch on the 2nd day you can find her wandering about listlessly. I think she walks about in the southwest part of the ranch, the bit that's the emptiest. Can't remember her dialogue (if she speaks at all)

My argument is refuted. It's evident by three things.

1. Dat strawman.
2. unwillingness to listen and think logically.
3. Mango image, edited no less.

Hostility sure does show superiority, especially on a discussion board about video games.

You could say that in terms of "how badly the protagonist is fucked" picrelated also counts, since both the premise and ending are all about Chakan being tricked by Death thrice since the eternal life which he in the first place won from duel with Death is living hell, he would never stop feeling the pain of innocent and weak until all of the evil perishes, but as he cleansed the world of all evil Death just laughs at his claims for his rest from eternal suffering, since when Death said "until all evil is perished you will never know peace" didn't mean just Earth, it meant that all of those infinite stars which Chakan's eyes perceive in the sky are filled with evil, and until the day that he finds his way from Earth to continue his eternal quest he will just wait in pain.

I think the best thing about Bastion is how it ends at just the right time in just the right way. You don't feel like it dragged on, nor do you feel like you wanted more: the conclusion is satisfying. You're left with the distinct impression that you just played a really great vidya, even if the game itself wasn't as revolutionary as some critics make it out to be.

Proper pacing in vidya is a lost art, I guess.
>>
>>284715618
To me, Bastion is proof that a story-driven game CAN work.

That saidthe soundtrack was too short and I felt there wasn't enough variation in it. $20 for 45 minutes?
>>
>>284703547
I'm so sick of this game.
I've played through it 3 times myself. Twice normal, one pain mode.
Then on valentines day my grill basically begged me to play it for 12 hours straight. We only stopped because I put my foot down and wanted to get some fucking sleep.
Then when we woke up I played it for another 5 hours until we finished it.

I love the games humor, its really not edgy compared to any sonic fan-fiction or anything else really. Its just a lot of dark humour.

Also the soundtrack is fucking great.

Yume Nikki's kind of like a surrealistic sandbox exploration
it's a strange experience, mind-numbing at times. I didn't like it when I started out with it either.

I began to find the combination of the visual and auditory design really impressive for how much it's able to achieve with so little

The weird thing with Yume Nikki is it's about 80% aimless wandering until the point where your eyes are ready to gloss over.
Combined with the droning ambience and repetitive backgrounds it can feel like you're drifting between waking and dreaming yourself

I'm not sure if it's that way by design or not, but if it was
it's a pretty brilliant one-of-a-kind experience for something some guy was able to make in RPG Maker

Actually, in Arcanum if you side with the villain, you can break him out of the pocket dimension he's stuck in and lay waste to the world together. No one remains alive, none of your friends or allies, only you two. Then he turns on you but you manage to kill him, barely.

The epilogue tells the story that you are sitting on top of a now dead and empty world, surrounded by the skeletons of everyone and everything you slaughtered, and how you are the last remaining living thing, and you are quietly awaiting for your own death so you may join the others in the great silence.

i'd say this is pretty dark. it looks like the "bad" ending, but if you pay close attention it is actually the good one.
