How is it that Oblivion had such great memorable side quests, yet its main storyline was terrible?

I was an Elder Scrolls virgin until I picked up Skyrim. I fell so hard in love that I picked up Oblivion. At first I thought Oblivion was butt ugly, but I've spent the last 6 months in fucking Oblivion, and its gotten to the point where I find myself actually admiring the graphics.

Its all about perspective. The graphics were great for the time.

Elder Scrolls 6 when?!?!

The rumor is March 2016 with an announcement this E3, but I don't buy it. I'd bet 2017. What about you guys?

Also, where is it gonna be set?
>>

meh. Skyrim has flaws no doubt about it. but with mods I put 400 hours into it and had a ton of fun with it.
>>
>>284228405

I never played the game, don't know why. I decided to play it a few months ago, but they bug me, even though I would have been amazed 9 years ago. It's like that awkward point in graphical development.
>>
>>284233823
play it enough and you will acclimatize
>>
>>284233823
there are tons of graphics mods out there that will help. You can't get it looking as good as modded skyrim looks but you can get it looking pretty close to a modern game.

My guess is we are going to get a bunch of Fallout 4 info at e3 and maybe a super vague teaser trailer for TES6 that is nothing more than a title and a logo

Playing it with my brother for first time, we were thinking it would be shit. Came out of sewers mostly unimpressed and realised it was free roam and all looked this good and you could loot nearly everything. Then shivering Isles, I fucking loved the shivering Isles so much. Played it for 23 hour straight whilst visiting my brother once. Great days to be alive.
>>
Yeah TES6 is going to be 2017 at the earliest.
Bethesda's dev team is pretty small for a AAA studio, and they don't have a B team or anything. So TES6 development wont start until FO4 is done.

Because who plays for the main quest anyway?

You break out of jail, leave the sewers, swim across the lake, take out the two bandits outside the Ayleid ruin and then you do whatever the fuck you want, as long as that doesn't involve going to Weynon Priory.

Oblivion was brilliant because it was clearly not about the main storyline, it was about the player. Skyrim is nowhere near as good for the opposite reason.

We had a thread about this yesterday. Some fag was talking about how the redguards can create time vortexes or some bullshit with their swords, how they have airships and all this other cool-ass shit in Hammerfell. And also how none of it will be present in the actual game and we'll get generic plains and mountains filled with boring old bandits and wolves because Bethesda can't into imagination. Same shit with what happened to the living jungles of Cyrodiil, from what I heard.

Also, why is everyone so confident the next game will be in Hammerfell?
>>
>>284235532
It took me 2 years to actually bother to complete the main story and i played the game for hours almost every day. I would spend ages just picking a point on the compus and walking until i find a ruin or cave and then go exploring.

We're not. There's nothing to go one, its all speculation. It could be Hammerfell, the Balck Marsh, Valenwood/Elsweyr, Summerset Isles, the part of Morrowind that's the size of fuckign Skyrim that we never went to in Morrowind..

They could even get original and take us to a new continent. Pic related.

Some anonymous fucker "reportedly" inside Bethesda gave an anonymous tip to an anonymous journalist that it will be the Black Marsh, released in 2016, sometime around March.

What pisses me off is that vampire snake-samurai seems so goddamn inconsistent with what we've been fed all these years by the games themselves. It's like Bethesda is trying so hard to make TES as generic a fantasy world as they can. Swords, sorcery, dragons, elves, and demons (I'm sorry, "daedra") are always the focus. The moment something new and interesting eventually shows up (like said snake samurai) it will seem totally out of place and jarring, like the devs just made it up on the spot to be weird. Not that it would ever happen in the first place, though, because we all know Bethesda is afraid of creativity. Morrowind was the closest we got to something truly unique and non-generic.
>>
>>284237904
They removed spellmaking (and most spells) because they said it would unbalance the game.

Removing optional content. From a single player game. Because it can possibly make your character OP.

Who knows how the fuck their minds work. They didn't even include most of the shit they made for that game jam.

Oblivion never looked good, it even underwent a HUGE downgrade like the ones you faggots are getting a seizure about nowadays. The gameplay sucked ass in every Elder Scrolls too, even with mods.

The only thing worthwhile out of this shitty series is Nehrim, which probably none of you retards has played.

The main quest chain is vastly under rated. It's honestly well thought out and contains two of the best quests in the entire game (namely, infiltrating the mythic dawn, and invading Mankar's Paradise). Even the couple of dungeon diving quests had well designed dungeons. It even brings up some decent conversation about the lore!

I think people just shit on it because they didn't realize the quest to close an oblivion gate outside of every city was optional.

I know, it makes no sense whatsoever, because the game is more broken than ever with Enchanting/Alchemy exploits, and shit even just getting smithing to 100 and using a stock potion breaks combat completely.

But see anon, that breaks the game in a boring way, so it's cool. If you could create a spell like in Oblivion to make everyone in 50ft super brave and super furious, that would be a problem. But making a really strong sword that can kill the final boss in 8 hits? That's realism, so it's okay.

This quest was fucking great. The one consistently great thing about TES is the lack of boring fetch/objective quests. The mansion murder mystery was all dialogue and decisions - no combat, crafting, exploration, or any of that, and it was one of the most fun things to do in the game.

>Same shit with what happened to the living jungles of Cyrodiil

The nibenean valley is largely tropical. The reason they didn't make the country primarily jungle was a design choice, not laziness (although it's possible excessive vegetation could have bogged down the already limited processing power of 7th gen consoles and computers people were using in 2006). Perhaps they were worried that making things primarily jungles would have made it too similar to Morrowind's ecology?

To be honest, I think it has a lot to do with nostalgia. Most of you played Oblivion when you were kids, and it was your first dose. I'm a newfriend to ES, so I played them back to back after I was already a grown man, and they were equally as fun to me.

The only notable differences I noticed were that Skyrim's main quest was 10000x better than Oblivion's. Also Skyrim's side quests had way too much cave shit. And I know Skyrim has less weapons available to make, or something along those lines, but it wasn't something I saw in practice because I'd never get to 100% completion unless I was in middle school again, on Summer break.

Overall, they were both 10/10 games for me, and I'm excited to see the 6th.
>>
>>284239390
Fuck I actually love Oblivion. It's so sunny and bright and colourful, and it sounds... peaceful a lot of the time.

>>284239460
Guild quests were just far better. Main quest in Oblivion is probably still far better than the best Skyrim quest though. The Battle of Sancre Tor and the one outside Bruma were brilliant as well.

Nah, I first played Oblivion at 17, through to a few months before Skyrim.

Skyrim is definitely nowhere near as good as Oblivion. As has been said itt before, Oblivion has a certain charm that Skyrim completely lacks.

You're forgetting that Skyrim had no spellmaking, hardly any spells, REALLY short side quests.

So yeah, Skyrim had one quest line that was better than Oblivion's. The rest were exponentially worse.

Like I explained, I have a huge backlog I was happily beginning to clear.

The " fight it " part is entirely self-imposed, /v/ and its opinions have nothing to do with it at all.

The only reason it even matters is because a few games are coming out in rapid succession starting at the end of this month, so I was spending this time clearing older games I'd put on the back burner.

And then there's Oblivion, just like Deus Ex and Vampire the masquerade, any time I see a thread about it I get this urge to reinstall it and it takes precedence over any games I was trying to play.

So yeah, it wasn't because I was told to play a checklist, it's just that Oblivion likes to come in from time to time and just kick everything else I'm doing to the curb.

Not really no. I beat it, but trudging into that game is a relic of relics. The hardest part of it thought is trying to get hit level 5. Once you get that via a combat or magic spec thought, you're golden for the rest of the game pretty much. Before then thought all of your stats are are piss poor, and you die in a few clean hits. Not only that, but the WILDLIFE, IN CITYS, DOING NIGHTIME, IF YOU AREN'T IN AN INN.

The amount of times I left the starting area, only to end up at night in a city, and then get slapped by a wolf is insane.

>Daggerfall
The best. Just note magic in that game hurts. Period. A lot of deaths I had in that was because some imp behind a door got a spell off on me and nuked me for all of my health. Doen't matter your level, they can still do it while your 20 fighting wyverns. Yes, there was dragons in Daggerfall I don't know why everyone acted like Dragons where a new topic in skyrim.

Well in the lore, only Argonians can really survive in 85% of Black Marsh, so that'd be pretty fucking stupid, but not like Bethesda hasn't raped their own lore after making Cyrodiil a temperate forest. Then again you could argue Talos and his CHIM shit, but that's getting pretty deep

I don't think you know how alcoholism works.
I would know, I'm pretty sure I'm fucked at this point myself.

At least the guy running the liquor store is cool as shit and is always turning me on to new shit he gets in as well as making sure what I like is in stock at all times.

Hell he probably pays for the building expenses from me alone.

I loved Oblivion because there were so many cool side quests, you could be walking and all of a sudden be swept away into something you actually were interested in. Skyrim didn't seem to have that at all. Were there ever any cool quests that like that in Skyrim?

I think my favorite from Oblivion was the who-dun-it quest for dark brotherhood, or when I ran into Hackdirt and started investigating around there.

there's no logic in the elder scrolls universe when it comes to technology, they use weapons that don't work (throwing knives), staple weapons that became staple weapons because of how effective they were (spears and later polearms), magic is not used in armies in game (it is in the lore, but you never see battlemage guards), the armor classes are completely arbitrary, the reason for ACs is to differentiate between a gambeson and mail, not for different types of what is essentially plate, there's no cavalry to speak of, no lances, no javelins, no slings, and then you've got dwemer with fucking robots

technology in TES is fucking retarded and dumb

This is why i hate skyrim. There were too many flat surfaces that let you see exactly what was a mile that way. Atleast with oblivion you had a sense of wonder about whats over the next hill while in skyrim you could see all the terrain from the map and most interesting points can be seen from quite some distance away. There are so many things wrong with skyrim that makes me rage like an autist. Its disgusting that they did this and i wish years of pain upon them for it.

meh both oblivion and skyrim are pretty good. Especially skyrim if you separate it from being a TES game and just judge it on its own. In the end I of course am disappointed in the lack of a dynamic graphical environment due to its shit engine and the lack of proper rpg skills and mechanics, but I still had a lot of fun in both these games. Just like the total war cycle, im sure when the nest TES comes out you'll all hate it and then say 'hey skyrim wasnt so bad'

Magic litterally solves anything tech wise. However, there's already airships, spaceships, space stations, and other weird shit in Elder Scrolls. Just read a little bit of lore, Dwemer Airships are in Redguard, Bloodmoon, and Dragonborn. Battlespire takes place on a space station, and different space travel is mentioned in books, but pretty much never appear in game.

Ending an addiction is a process that has an EXTREMELY high failure rate unless said addict gets professional help...and even. There is a wide and varied reason for this, but saying 'just quit it' largely doesnt work except in exceptional cases. Shit it may even 'work' for a year or two, but there is a heavy genetic and psychological reasons for addiction and overcoming that requires a process that has been honed for decades.

One I'm thinking of is the Chimera of Desolation, made by Mehrunes Dagon to imprison an small island.
>>
>>284251686
Somewhat, but there isn't much to work with really. It's very hard to make spells analogous to the command humanoid and creature spells of Morrowind and Oblivion.

>>284251748

>>284251834
You answered your own question anon, it looks good and that's why it's shitty. Everything in Skyrim is style over substance. I just hope they improve things for the next game. A long-shot, but I'd settle for improved magic alone.

Wrong, it's willpower, and saying otherwise is just an excuse not to do it because it's easier. It's as simple as just stopping, and to allow something to have this kind of control over your life is weakness on your part.
>>
>>284252704
there WERE 2 such packs for morrowind and im pretty sure i remember one for oblivion. The problem is the packs take a bunch of work to put together, you have to get permission from the original creators (which is why i wrote WERE) and the packs are easily out dated.

Oblivion takes place at the center of the greatest empire in history at its height. Skyrim takes place after said empire has lost 2/3 of it's land and legitimacy in the land of snowniggers. What the fuck do you think would happen. It's like comparing the city of Rome in 100 AD with Scotland in 500 AD.
>>
>>284253321
With Skyrim at least you can just use Steam Workshop to improve the game significantly. I made Morrowind unplayable I'm so awful at installing mods, but the Workshop makes it easy.

The only detriment is I am starting to want all the sex mods and for that I'll need SKSE and all that.
>>
>>284252704

Just make sure they are in the correct order when you launch the game or entire areas of the map vanish for no reason.

oblivion is better game but I agree with the guy who said terrain is worse, it is.

Spots in skyrim actually manage to feel secluded, rather than a fucking fort with dangerous creatures wandering the entrance slaughtering people within an arrows shot of the continents capital in oblivion. Best you get in a location on top of a super flat hill-cliff hybrid you can just jump up or locations like hack dirt that are just a walk across flat Forrest that's a 15 minute walk out from town.

Nobody's going to tell you that Oblivion had good or even decent animations, but they were a pretty damn big step up from Morrowind's. I'm not even sure how that could ever be up for debate in the first place. I'd be happy to be proven wrong with an example or two, though.

Both Morrowind and Oblivion impressed the hell out of a younger me with their visuals when they came out, but no Bethesda game has ever had acceptable animations to my eyes. Not then and certainly not now.

Then you'd probably like it, because it's not Oblivion and there's nothing to remember. It's a totally different game that takes place in a totally different world. Oblivion is just its platform. Nehrim is the sequel to a similar mod they made called "Arktwend" in 2006 that was built using Morrowind as its platform. The upcoming mod "Enderal" will be its sequel built on Skyrim.

If you're ever in the mood for a TES style game but ran out of TES to play, those are your best bets.
