I really don't understand the appeal of rhythm games, especially rhythm games based on a story/character heavy RPG.

Except in most games there is feedback from the game to the player depending on what you press and how. Yes they're all just pressing buttons, but a normal game will change depending on what you press. A rhythm game will just count that press as a point or not a point basically. There's no interaction aside from "press buttons to make points".
