Any good tips for gunlance?
So I've only played MH3U and now MH4U so I'm not a huge series veteran, but I feel like 4 is a huge decrease in difficulty,
In 3, if I had never seen a monster before, it would take 5-10 tries to beat it and learn how to not get hit, at all. All the monsters were massively tank-y.
Now in 4 they all die before I run out of First Aids (have yet to bring a supply with me). I mean fuck, I didn't even grab the supplies for this egg mission I was doing, a Tetsucabra showed up unexpectedly and he was dead in a minute or so.
I'm afraid that at like Hi Rank the difficulty is going to spike hardcore and expect me to know all of the monster attacks, which I don't and won't.

Get to know about your weapon's critical distance depending on your type of arrow, if the screen shakes with a big yellow hit then its the right distance.
ALWAYS USE POWER COATING, if your bow has no support to it, its either a shit bow or you need to get armor skills to unlock it.
Wide arrow is for close range, rapid is for mid and pierce is for long.
The bow has 2 types of "special attack", the shrapnel shower or power shot

Also, remember that a decent amount of the monsters you never hunted in 3 that are in 4 are actually predecessors (meaning they use the same skeleton and a lot of attack patterns) of ones in 3, like Yian Kut-ku. You already know what a lot of these guys do.

Nah, you should really always have two sets on the go man. Its always nice to have an alt set up for when a monster just does not agree with your weapon of choice.
I mean, I love my Hunting Horns, but some monsters are just not fun to fight with it. So I've been keeping an Insect Glaive set going on the side, and its helped me get passed some fights that would have been frustrating as fuck with the Horn

From a fellow bowgunner to you. You gotta master the timing of the attacks and sidestep those piderman swings.
I've lost count of how many scrubs I've carried in the online with my bowgun and I barely get hit. You gotta get that 6th sense tier dodging going or you'll be a detriment to other players. Never forget that we have 50% of the armour of blademasters so dodging and positioning is extremely important for us.
But if you're still having trouble with the pider, try switching to a LBG, I'm personally a HBG user, but in 4U I've had more fun and success with LBGs, especially since the seltas LBG is a fucking minigun so there goes the coolness factor through the roof.

not 100% sure about the attention grabbing of the monster, but that's where the LBG comes in, since you can mount a silencer/suppressor for better recoil and less attention. Combine that with the stealth armour skill and you'll be the least targeted, hence why LBGs have an easier time due to mobility and notability.
But its hard to drop the sheer firepower of a good HBG though

doing a heavy bowgun/bow run this time through, for a full setup, take traps, bombs, any and all phials that your bow can use, flash bombs, and if your want to, materials to make more of the listed above. There is a specific distance away from the monster that will give you the most damage out of your shots with the bow, try to stay at that distance, also, your bow is really good for breaking wings/heads/backs, anything that doesnt have to be cut off. and also, aim for weak spots, the bow doesnt do a shit tonne of damage, so you will have to aim to get the most out of your weapon, a hard weapon to get good at, but well worth it.
Things to remember when fighting with a bow:
If you think the monster is going to attack you, dont start charging another shot, this will lock you into place for a moment, potentialy causing you to get hit, and with wimpy gunner armor, its going to hurt
learning to evade and dodge attacks properly is huge
status coatings are your friends use them well, and often, power coatings are great, but they cost too much to mass produce and to buy in lower rank, i wouldnt worry about them unless its a hard fight, but hold on to 50, just in case.
You can mount attack with bows and bowguns, so dont be afraid to run up and drop down on em.
staying well stocked on coatings, traps, bombs, and materials to make them is important.

4 (japan only) added Seltas, Tetsucabra, Kecha Wacha, Gore Magala, Najarala, Zamtrios, Nerscylla, Seltas Queen, Shagaru Magala, Dalamadur, and Dah'ren, the last two are kinda annoying fights despite the wow factor. The others are pretty cool and unique.
MH4U adds Seregios and Gogmazios, as well as subspecies of the other new monsters. I have only fought Seregios so far but it seems like one of the best Monster fights in the game.

You can change your ace palico's forte by setting multiple first stringers of the same forte. Set 3 healers and get a healer ace.

From what I understand, Enthusiasm is your felynes tiredness meter basically, less enthusiasm means it will use its skills less and generally be less active. Either letting it rest or eating will raise its enthusiasm.
It is always Ace + 1 other but what I just learned is that your 1st stringers will determine what skills your Ace learns overall. For example having 2 Health Palicos as 1st stringers means your Ace learns detox horn (recommended for Multiplayer if you do 2 players often or just overall because fuck healing palicos are awesome)
Their armor determines monster priority but that's it for direction.

Defense: uses defense boosting horns, is more likely to defend against attacks and can use some ranged attacks
Healing: uses health and status removal horns
Support: Occasionally marks monster locations, can lay down shock traps.
Bombing: Throws bombs, will set bombs next to palico set traps,
Stealing: less likely to be targeted, only uses boomerang which is buffed
Treasure: Doesn't attack, but gathers more often and faster.

Why are insect glaives so rediculously OP? You literally shoot your bug 3 times, ascend to Ssj4 and demolish anything through a mix of fucking shaolin martial arts and bug shooting. And then when it can't get any better, you get a literal FREE mount.
Also quick question, is charging up your bug shot with R + X worth the time, or is it only situational whether you should use it or not? The damage increase seems significant but i'm not sure.

Try it again, while solo hunting its much easier if you go at it "shotgun" mode where you aim in the general direction and shoot, with some soft aiming on the side.
And dodge roll and sidestep like your life depends on it, because it does.
Or if you want more mobility, try a LBG, they're way quicker to unsheath and you go in non-running speed with it out, and you can soft aim while running, its the weapon of choice for the more dynamic gunner.

when I was playing freedom unite on the PSP, yeah you need to time your charges, which means you need to learn the enemies move patterns. Generally you aim for the head when it turns. That bullshit where you see people charge hitting a charging tigrex and causing it to stun is 99% bullshit. In the end though, youll do unsheathing attacks. Meaning you run around, do your first attack (which should be a chop overhead(aim for the head)) then roll out and re-sheath your weapon. Combos are good too, if you think you can get away with it. Defending is okay because you can get a skill called sharperner that fast sharpens your weapon. It also is mean to block the gycepros flash and can save you from a hip check or fast charging monster.

Yeah I'm sure you don't want someone who can buff your attack, defense, increase your movement speed and stop attack deflection, make hot and cold drinks a thing of a past, stop monster screeches from affecting you, curing you of status ailments, stopping wind from affecting you, etc.
Face it the HH is a great weapon to have on your team and anyone who uses it effectively is on par with Hammer users, they're one of the most team oriented players. They have to be, it's their job or they're not doing it right.
