You have to do 10% or more damage to the npc's entire health bar before they will aggro you.
So unless you are mid game with a +5 or higher weapon with scaling, you aren't going to aggro them in one hit. Especially at the very beginning of the game

Balder sword works. If you are planning on doing pvp later, you are going to need to decide how far you want to level up, and what you want to level up.

not really for me personally, its all about that atmosphere and adventure and ove that made the game great.,the main con is that you dont get messages from other players which can be helpful. now that i think about it you can probably get away with playing online, you can only be invaded when you reverse hollowing and become human, and chances are you wont spend too much time human n your first playthrough
