Your double swing is excellent for elemental damage, just make sure you're using the proper element for your hunt. Same with status btw. Also your ability to KO and exhaust are not dependant on your raw, so whack away with double swings and hit that monster weakness

Honestly, I played 3U on my old 3DS (grabbed the NewXL with this) and I found the virtual control pad perfectly fine. Unless you're underwater in 3U, you only ever need to center the camera behind you, or on the monster.
In 4U, while locked onto your target, one L tap centers the camera on him, two taps puts it behind you. Utilizing this mechanic, along with the virtual control pad on the touch screen, should be much easier to get accustomed to than becoming a claw-handed arthritic in your thirties.
That said, I've heard 4U on an old 3DS has some pretty shit-tier graphics and load times.

Update here. I just ran my fingernail along the outside edges of the touch screen because apparently there have been some issues with factory sealing of the back plate on N3DS XL causing issues with pressure on the bottom screen. After doing this all of my face buttons now work, along with my analog stick, touch screen, and D-pad. I am really worried now if it was a defect or just a pressure issue. Fucking hell.
