As someone that has been to GDC a few times (2013 and 2014), I can tell you pretty much no one gives a shit about the SJW stuff
they just dont talk about it. Sure, there are talks, but the talks are about 5% of the total "population" that go to GDC. Most of the action happens on the floor where you meet devs and make connections. And most of the connections happen at bars, clubs, and restaurants. It's a glorified networking event. Bigger devs show up to show off their cool stuff and why it's exciting to develop for them, and there's tons of smaller devs too, even a huge indie section

A "safe spot" is kind of a flawed concept in that it really does imply that areas outside it are unsafe, since you feel the need to designate that it is safe, and it it's designation that makes it special or different from the norm. If you want to be seen as a truly inclusive event, just bill yourself as such. Don't say the floor is lava but luckily you have these couch cushions handy.
More than anything else, this is something that damages the event since you are calling everything outside the women/gay/liberal base a misogynistic/rightie minefield, validity of the implication not withstanding.
I continue to think of Jared Ray's argument with the FGC years back, arguing that inclusiveness is something they should strive towards, while other arguments were about keeping it "real". It's not a perfect analogy, but making a concious effort to castrate the audience so other people feel more comfortable is more than a little pointless. It's appealing to an audience that isn't yours. Man or woman, those who can't groove with the beat isn't supposed to be there. This stuff has to be organic or it's false. It's a very clear dichotomy (is that the right word?), one that is what drives every argument for and against it.
