You fucking idiot, Stranglehold had a cover mechanic. There's nothing wrong with a cover mechanic as long as the combat isn't built around that. Since you couldn't even remember Stranglehold had one, we'll use that as an example of cover done right. It wasn't the focus of combat; combat was fast paced and almost arcadey, and cover was there if you needed it. Nine times out of ten I was running and gunning.
Binary Domain did cover right too by being another arcadey shooter with cover there when you need it. And you couldn't stay in cover for long because the AI was great.
Gears of War and ME2/3 are cover shooters done poorly. The game is built around chest high walls and the combat is tailored for cover.

I fucking loved Stranglehold. I remember when the demo came out I replayed the first mission a couple times just to shoot while sliding on those food carts.
Granted, the novelty wears off later but it's a seriously underrated game. Not perfect by any means, but does not deserve being forgotten like it is.
