The double bladed lightsaber was the maximum amount of edge they could have ever possibly went with the lightsaber before they went into the ridiculous territory that the new lightsaber in this movie went towards. The double bladed lightsaber at least made sense in being somewhat practical in the star wars world. Darth Maul was a mysterious Sith that wielded on so it obviously deserved a pass. With the way the lightsaber is suppose to work according to the lore, only the double bladed and standard ones would ever make any sense. Yoda's of course because he is small.
