From what I've read the way the cart is allowing us to play games is actually by imitating actual game carts using a relatively expensive device called an FPGA.
Its essentially allowing for straight 1:1 bootlegging, with a controller to cycle through different ROM's on the cart itself, so its no surprise that there are no direct software exploits.
3DS flashcards are still in a early state, honestly to the point where I don't see a need to pick one up yet.
I get the feeling the flash cart market for the 3DS will be in better shape within the next 2 years though, especially now that the encryption on this shit is starting to get blown open.

The only possibly argument I can make against Gateway is the limited stock of 4.1-4.5 3DS's. In theory, that supply may dry up in the future, and Gateway sales will drop as a result (and they'd stop support due to getting little to no profit).
However, Gateway has been fantastic with updates, such as Emunand for 9.0 in a mere 8 days. I personally have owned a Gateway since day 1, and I've been pretty fucking satisfied with mine.

Gateway is as good as it gets, it's really not that hard to install or get running either. The hardest part is finding a 4.5 3DS to run exploit in the first place. All the refurbs are being updated to latest FW now no exception, and secondhand 4.5s are both becoming scarce and jacked up in price because of demand

It is based on a FPGA which is basically a microchip which comes in a blank state and they most likely had to engineer the 3DS Cartridges and all it's gates and wiring on it in order for it to be recognized as a normal 3DS cardridge. This in itself is shittons of work + FPGAs are not that cheap to come by.
