Why do people think consoles hold gaming back?
Is it not clear that making a console with more beef will cost more money making less people want to buy it due to the financial loss?
Does it not make sense that making a game that works on mid tier hardware will make more sales because such a small percentage of people are willing to spill that much money into a PC that contains god tier hardware?
Then there are people who complain about buyers remorse stating people say bad games are good to justify the purchase of their console. If a lot of people enjoy these "bad games" does it not suggest they are good games? Do you truly believe your opinion is greater than the masses because you THINK your opinion holds more weight than most people. Is it not a bigger expression of buyers remorse to call these games bad because they are that much behind your extremely expensive PC leaving you with less content to fully put it to the test?
Does it not make sense that rather than consoles holding back games it is just your PC is ahead of modern day standards? Why should the best of the best of the best be considered the standard when so few people invest in it?
And for the love of god why do people say things like "developers shouldn't be thinking of the money." Is it not their job? Is it not sensible to try and get the maximum amount of finance from your product? What motivation does a developer have to put in MORE effort to produce an outstanding looking game that LESS people will play due to hardware limitations? Why do you think developers OWE you a breakthrough game that runs on the most advanced hardware and will earn them less money when a good game will work on a wider range of hardware and make them more due to a larger target audience?

No, just no. Gaming isn't going to catch up to tech. That's a given. We have DDR4 RAM and X99 Mobos with 8 core processors that give no benefit over DDR3 RAM, Z87 mobos with 4 core CPUs. Hyperthreading, which has been around for over a decade now, is just now becoming useful for gaming.
The problem is a combination of the ceiling for tech being so high that it's borderline useless for devs for now, and that consoles are massively lagging behind in terms of quality. They're not mid range equivalent. They're low tier locked PCs. The benefit they get is from APIs instead of CPUs.

Games designed for console don't have particularly good assets, and when they get ported to PC, they very often retain the same assets, with framerate and resolution being the only improvements. I want to see a game with stunningly detailed assets and beautiful attention to detail, but right now that just isn't possible if it's on consoles unless they commit themselves to 30fps and 720p. And even then, it's a stretch. Furthermore, to develop such a game as a PC exclusive and thus generate such suitable assets simply would not be profitable compared to just developing it for consoles.
Of course, it's not just a problem with consoles. Even the developers of a PC exclusive are liable to err on the side of lower specs and do the same thing anyway, so that everyone who owns a toaster can buy and play their game. See: Blizzard.
To me, it's mostly just lamentation that the current market doesn't really allow much room for creating the visual masterpieces that are currently possible to make. I'm still happy when a new generation of consoles are released, because that means that the PC versions of multiplats will finally get to have some more up-to-date assets to work with.
