Put a fence around your house, place torches on the fence, make sure your property inside the fence is lit up well.
Make sure you have room inside the perimiter to make fields & other things you wish to build.

I normally make a nice 1 story shack with a fence at least 4-6 blocks away, all around the structure.
It's good for a starter house before moving on to bigger things.
