Blunt weapons and slashing weapons should be balanced, blunt being slower but stronger, and blades being quicker but weaker. Oblivion certainly hasn't taught me that blunt is better, quite the opposite, because not only do longswords and claymores do more damage than their blunt counterparts but they also have more reach. I'm hoping Skyrim isn't the same because I like battle axes more than greatswords but don't want to shoot myself in the foot over aesthetics.
