I had my MC as either gladiator or paladin use swords and axes when hunting metals, a martial artist who looked like Alena using claws, a sage who was my heal/buff bitch and my 4th character would change jobs depending on what I felt would be more useful for a particular boss but she was usually paladin if MC was glad or luminary or something if MC was paladin.
You can use what you want, you dont need 4 sword users wearing falcon swords to beat the game or mega bosses, you just need strategies that work for what you want to use

Weapon-wise is even worse. They tried making most weapons not suck by giving them alchemy upgrades, but even then there was no fucking point to most of them, especially since you couldn't use the item-powers of unequipped weapons and armors or swap between equipment mid-battle.
Swords - no point of any other sword except Uber Falcon and this is by far the best damaging method for anything NOT a metal slime-type enemy which is 99.9% of all enemies
Spears - versatile and effective, easily the best utility of all weapons
Knives - completely pointless, basically a shitty version of swords
Wands - pointless for anything except casters and worthless for physical combat
Whips - totally worthless because of the enemy number limitations, meaning you will never be overwhelmed by numbers, even then there are plenty of other weapons that do single and multi-target combat better, especially single combat because whips suck at that
Staves - spears' retarded cousin, but worse because their only multi-hit runs off a shitty formula of strength and magical might that weakens it more than it should
Claws - a shitty version of swords again
Fans - would be worth it if disruptive wave weren't so common, nullifying their one good skill. And hustle dance is a shitty pinch-heal compared to those that specialize in it.
Axes - This one pissed me off the most. Axes were quite effective in DQ8, but worthless in 9. Spears shit all over them in 9, and their ultimate attack, whopper chop, doesn't even work properly. It says it deals a "critical strike", but it's not a critical hit and uses magic as a modifier, meaning its worthless against anything you'd want to use it on. Helm Splitter is still nice, but honestly, that's not enough reason to use Axes over spears.

Uh, what? I've played all three versions of DQ1 , and SNES no where near as s;ow as NES. GBC MIGHT be faster (Although I recall both taking me about as long to beat) but it can't be that huge of a difference, plus the SNES version has very pleasant graphics and music. Not that the GBC version is bad or anything, but still.
Now if you're talking about DQ2, I haven't put forth enough time in it (made good distance in the SNES version but lolZSNES messed up my save somehow). I could be wrong when it comes to that game.

Hammers - surprisingly decent, especially compared to the big nerf axes had. Bagsy Last can be alright, and there are plenty more material enemies than plant types. Crackerwhack makes hammers worth giving a fuck at all. However, it's not worth using over swords or spears in boss combat.
Boomerangs- suffer the same problems as whips. Gigathrow is worthless on top of that. Metalicker is pathetic compared to other metal-killing options. Really, it's just as bad as it was in 8, but worse because there's not even big groups to make them worth a single fuck.
Bows - they're basically the retarded love child of spears and wands. No point to bows over either of those two.
So in the end, your best options are: the uber falcon sword, spears, wands for casters, and maybe crackerwhack/bagsy last hammers for random battles if you really like hammers, if not than just the first 3. Everything else is worthless in comparison.

It's too bad DQ9 was made before Streetpass's were a thing. Getting Streetpasses in the west is tough enough in the west but at least possible in the right cities (mainly metropolitan) or locations (College/University, Cons) along with the relay pass thing at AT&T hotspots. Finding a person by chance in America with DQIX in canvas mode would be impossible nowadays, and was probably really tough even back then (except at Cons or so I heard).
The only place I know that does frequent DQIX canvasses is some group that meets at the Nintendo Store in NYC once a week. It's kinda cool knowing they're still doing it after so long.

I noticed someone already posted the latest blog post where Yugi Horii was allowed to talk to the fans. And some of you shrugged it off like it was nothing. While it is insulting that all we are getting is iOS ports, you still need to respond on SquareEnix blog and twitter that you want the other games. Remember, the SE rep claimed they would localize Dragon Quest VII and X if 'there was enough of a demand from the fanbase.'
This is not the time to act cool by ignoring the people who keep ignoring the fans. Everyone needs to go on their blog and twitter and bomb the hell out of them with reqests for all the DQ games to be localized. This is the first time SE has actually aknowledged there may be DQ fans outside Japan. Show them there are.
