Well that was the point, though. The main story did its thing, and the smaller stories spiced the game up nicely as you played it. Considering how little text is in the game it gave us a lot of memorable moments and characters, and it never felt like the story was overbearing. Hell Teddy is only in the game for the last eighth of it, but he still manages to be a character you care about whenhe dies helping you out. It's pretty remarkable, especially considering the limitations of the time and console.

You really do perform an abortion in Mother 2. Now, hear me out before you Motherfags get too nutty. Itoi has come out as publicly stating that no abortion or anything particularly abortion-like is taking place in that final act, but there's an interesting thing to note about Japan and abortion.
Specifically, the Japanese consider children to be a gift, and abortion at the time was considered EXTREMELY taboo over in Japan. So of course Itoi would cover his ass and say Ness and the kids weren't outright naively aborting Giygas in the womb. All the fuckin' evidence is there, it's not a coincidence, Itoi did a shit job hiding it. It's Itoi being Itoi and assuming we're not going to catch on. It's par for the course for that guy.
The reason why the kids can't grasp the true form of Giygas' attack, the reason why Giygas looks nondescript and impossible to really pin down a fluid form for, is not because Giygas had essentially evolved into some kind of insane, pure evil entity. It could be that only your vision of Giygas was obscured, or they left Porky normal to make him visible so you knew he was the one speaking. It could just be the limitations of the SNES. I really do believe this is why Giygas appears the way he does, also the fact that the glitching gets more intense as Giygas gets more aggravated, could be his influence increasing over the technology. Another thing I think could support this is the fact that in Mother 1, the alien invasion had influence over the furniture, and such. I think the aliens have an affect over human technologies.

It's fantastic, far and away the best JRPG on the NES except for maybe Dragon Quest 4. Difficult and grindy as expected of JRPGs at the time, if you can't handle a bit of grinding and difficulty skip itor play the GBA version with the easy mode, pussy.

Fantastic game. Fairly easy, but its world is perfect. Really good dialogue and writing and scenarios, but the combat is standard Dragon Quest. I'd recommend playing it no matter what.

Final game in the trilogy. Most story-heavy of the 3, best combat of the 3. Features a battle system where you tap A to the beat of the music to get extra hits, which is fun as hell. Play it, but play Earthbound first, as there are connections between them.
