Dark Messiah melee combat is shit though. You've got light attacks that barely do anything, enemy attacks with fucked up timings and range (like the goblins that can hit you with their short ass clubs from a mile off or all the enemies that hit before their swing). You don't know shit about video games. You had fast hits that could stagger enemies, heavy hits that break guards. Then you got specific weapons for each type, daggers for slicin' and dicin', staves for knocking things around. Sword for both.
This is one of my most re-installed games of all times. I always go back and play it again every couple years. Actually there was one time when by shear coincidence I managed to complete the game on the exact same day I had completed it the previous year. Confused me for a minute when I was looking at the timestamps on the savegames and thought they were out of order.

No, I played it on hard almost every time, and it's been several times through the years. The game is fun but melee weapon combat is just ass.
Spells are nice (pretty much easy mode in themselves), bows are at least functional, and kicking is probably the best part of the game. I've even done a stealth playthrough which wasn't as terrible as it could have been. Fighting with swords though is just ass.

Just a PSA plug here, make sure you use Arx Libertatis if you decide to (re)install Arx Fatalis. Pretty much necessary for the game to run well on modern systems... or older ones for that matter.

I found it a bit broken (atleast once you get the botomless quiver or what is that thing that gives you unlimited arrows called), you could usually just clear entire areas from distance and deal with the enemies indoors/close quarters using stealth. Spiders are only in set locations, and you can deal with them from long range by setting up firetraps and shooting bows at them, if that's what you prefer.
They are little bitches, though, they can poison you and poison is a fucking pain in the arse.

The stealth in this game is actually pretty great. Lots of ways to move around, distract your enemies, and backstabbing is satisfying as fuck. And all the environments really lend themselves to creative movement.

Games are just games. I hate the DM spiders because they're fuckers to kill and the tower chase is nerve-wracking if you want the secret room items but it wouldn't stop me playing the game.
