According to the japanese manual for the first game, beat ran away from home and tried joining a bunch of different gangs before the game starts.
Since the interview in the HD version has the creators talk about how they intentionally made the characters without thinking about backstory the way more modern games do, I thought it was interesting they put that in anyway (future manual has some wierd one off lines about backstory too, now that I think abot it)

The first three characters in JSR are basically a difficulty setting.
tab has lots of health, solid and spraycans, so it's pretty hard to fuck up or get too annoyed, beat is in the middle, and gum has no health and no spraycans but is one of the best characters for getting points

I've actually played the original JP version. probably the most fucked up change is that when you're fighting poison jam they have a completely different route. one in particular will actually LEAVE THE AREA for a bit in order to skate up to a hidden tube that shoots you back out into the sewers, and if you follow him you get a game over for going out of bounds.
also the order you unlock characters in is way different (in part because chapter 2 doesn't exist), the skaters you recruit just by going through the main story in future are all found in the same general areas you recruit them in this original JP version

JSRF is a really weird sequel to me, and not just because parts of it feel like an actual sequel and others like a starfox 64-style remake.

JSR is shorter, but it's also a lot more focused on replaying the levels for points (there's no NG+ in future even though you only unlock half the characters after you beat the game, meaning once you replace all the police grafiti all you can do is skate or make a new save,)
You can't even play for score without finding the hidden tapes and it's more about finding a specific rail that gives you way more points for no reason then finding infinite grinds like in JSR

this is so true. I think nobody should really take it too seriously because this game is more about icons and representation and being pure fun expressing several subcultures in music and graffiti culture rather than having fully fleshed out characters with deep but also intrusive backgrounds. Hence the comic style. that was their point. Not a single game out there truly needs narrative.
