All SMTs are easy as fuck, the only things that varies are the tedium (SJ clusterfuck grid maps) and the pandering (pic related).
>>253685552
Neat game. The art is cool as fuck and it is 90's as shit. Like World of Xeen with demons. Shame that the 3DS version (The only English version) doesn't have the Japanese voice acting.
I loved it. It was the first SMT I beat (I played nocturne back in 2003 I think and didn't beat it durimg that time)
What I liled best was the music_ I loved the Pseudo-Retro feel of game.
Dealing with demon alignment and personality, and giving them the proper command to raise their loyalty was the best feature. It felt good when you had a group of strong demons all super loyal and doing what you tell them to.
Nemissa is also the totalest of bestest babe.
>tfw lost 3DS and the game in English can't be emulated
What new XLs can use Gateway again?
Loved it. Its soundtrack and its atmosphere are both great, and it has the best demon negotiation system.

>>253685552
Uh... what? And what other games specifically? The ones in the same subseries (Devil Summoner) or SMT in general?
I fucking loved building armies of undead demons with Nemissa's Necroma skill. The whole front and back row mechanic allowed for some nice strategic play that other SMT games don't have. So I don't know what are you talking about.

>>253688270
>And I'd want the magnetite system brought back too.
I wish they'd never gotten rid of it. It's way too easy to just plow through every random encounter when you can walk around with a team of overpowered demons.

Exactly. "Outdated" my ass, it's a fantastic incentive to stop you from running away from battles.

I remember all these fags complaining about it on gamefaqs. Bunch of spoiled little fuckers.
The combat in soul hacker is the deepest and funnest oof all the smt games.
>>253690107
Yes. It forces you to not summon and dismiss demons wildly, and makes you actually have to deal with random encounters.
>>253690213
There were faggots complaining about it on /v/, too, since 3DS general hyped the game up for some retarded reason.
SH release threads were awful. Everyone bitching about the loyalty system, the demon negotiations, the magnetite system, the goddamn first person dungeon crawling. Bunch of casuals.

Hold on what? Can you elaborate on why the combat system is funny?
>>253690107
>I do miss the Moon Phases though.
Why? They always seemed largely useless to me.
>>253690446
To be fair, demon negotiations haven't been done in a good way in SMT games since... well I'd like to say 2, but that had the stupid habit of making everything a yes or no answer. A negotiation system that had to do with knowing the monster's lore to do well would be great, coupled with more brutal payments for stronger demons so that you can't get around that by just looking up the answers online.
>>253690904
I think Persona and Persona 2's negotiations were pretty good.
>>253690107
>I do miss the Moon Phases though.
That reminds me that SH did a lot of cool things with moon phases that I don't think any other SMT game did.
Like the different dungeon music during full moon, and demons whose strength changed depending on the phase of the moon (Zoma is shit during new moon, the Hare of Inaba is a boss-slaying warmachine during full moon). I wonder why.
How's the soundtrack /v/? I need a jrpg with some bomb ass tunes and Soul Hackers has been on my watchlist for awhile.

I love Soul Hackers, it's one of those games I wanted to play forever but lost hope after the fansub was basically dead till the remake was announced out of nowhere.
It's heavy with that 90s futurist/hacker culture vibe that was around leading up to the new millennium which I like alot. I wonder if Atlus would ever consider making a sequel of this series.
>>253685552
yeah naw. Nocturne might have in certain bosses since it's more about debuffs and buffing but no way do they take more strategy and thought.
>>253693614

Negotiations were good because you had like 4 dialogue options per character and you could send 2-3 characters together to talk to the demon and they would react accordingly and demons asked the usual random questions too.
But having to make a pact first, then having to find the demon again and talk to them again to get items was stupid.
>dat pre-battle tension music

>>253694756
It's an SRPG that takes place inside of a computer.
Basically, Amami City has been abandoned for months, and yet it still has electricity and working internet. The internet is still infested with demons, so Hacker beams himself into a computer to fight them.
Nemissa magically reappears for no real reason, then has to go away again for no real reason. The final boss's shtick is also really cringeworthy - his name is "Evil" and he's a being like Nemissa, but unlike Nemissa, he didn't have the POWER OF FRIENDSHIP, so he became evil.
It doesn't exist, okay? Let's never speak of it again.

It was really nice how they had the escapism theme for the game pretty present throughout it, without shoving it too hard down your throat. The way they resolve it at the end was like, sad enough to not even be bittersweet. The implications that Hacker still leans on escapism through being in a time loop or staying a demon summoner despite witnessing firsthand what that means through Urabe, Judah, Naomi, and Finnegan's deaths is depressing.

God, if only SJ and Raidou could learn from this. Talk about preachy.
Help me get back into SH, /v/. I like the game, but the thing that put me off a bit is not the Magnetite thing or whatever it's called, but the fact that my demons don't level up. It makes me wonder if I'm at the right level or not.

I never considered before that his life outside of the time loop is almost just as depressing.
DS1 pretty much spells it out for you with the"one day the protagonist will die and Kyouji will be there to send him back to Hell"bit at the end, but I was so caught up in the time loop implications that I entirely forgot about the other bit.
>Take a good look. Burn it into your memory. Summoners don't get an easy death.

>>253708443
Soul Hackers really did just do the best job at presenting summoners as something other than invincible, lucky people. Like just so much game design went towards that even just for Hacker. Nemissa in gameplay and story is just so much better and more important than he generally is.And every vision quest is a progressively stronger summoner, well beyond Hacker's strength, all dying from anticlimactic circumstances beyond their control despite all that power. Even Finnegan can die just from not having the means to dismute his demons.
So many ways for Hacker to take that as a lesson, or just reject it. The fact it's open is way too interesting to me given it's so perfectly between times where you have SMT1 Hero dying like a bitch in a cave-in or Tatsuya in general, or Yu and Flynn farting rainbows of friendship that'll wash away the most dire of consequences.

That's probably one of my favorite things about the Devil Summoner series.
Even Kyouji, who is nigh invincible with his insanely overpowered Shuffler + Maragilaodies at the very start of the game, right after showing you just how much of a joke regular demons are to him.Rei, who can harness the power of goddesses, constantly carries coins around with her to show that she knows she can die at any moment and has prepared Charon's fare for crossing the River Styx. And one of the major trials that the DS1 protagonist faces is coping with the knowledge that he is technically dead and can never return to his old life, and he will one day die again in his duty as a summoner.
I wish there were more Devil Summoner games. It's got to be my favorite SMT subseries.

I liked the fact that the choices he gives you do change things immediately, but the ones a standard RPG would reward you for somehow or another clearly don't in this game. He's anything but childish when giving you that second choice, he's totally professional and giving sound advice.
He's such a cool character with his design and actions. Like the fact he's so high ranking, threatening, and competent as some assassin/body guard despite previously just being a professional boxer is really weird. You'd think he wouldn't adapt as well to that.

It's great how they got the danger of gimmicks and surprises down so well, where not everything always goes in favor of the stronger one/protagonist. Like if SJ was more like Devil Summoner, you better believe you'd have been playing as random strike team members getting killed in the same scenarios Space Marine ends up in, possibly only allowing him to avoid it through the direct feed from those who died alerting him to the threat.
I mean it's kinda goofy that if Ouroboros is too strong and regenerates nonstop, he'd just let you retreat and kill his power sources with no fuss. That's a situation where whoever learned that is gonna die, and the best you're gonna get is the next group you send in takes care of those energy sources first and finishes the job.

Raidou 1 and 2 are on sale on PSN right now
So is PS1 Persona 2 Eternal Punishment, Persona 3 and Persona 4

Actually now that I think about it, why hasn't anyone bothered to hack the devil summoning program?

When are Atlus games NOT on sale? They're like the only publisher who do sales on the eShop.
>>253712912
>Jap seems to like them, considering Raidou is whored out pretty regularly.
Raidou is really popular with fujoshi, for some reason. 2 pretty much panders to them nonstop.
There's this one K7 copypasta about how Emir is actually a Kuzunoha, though, and it stops in the middle to emphasize, "no, not the PS2 travesty." It makes me laugh every time.

Twice in a row.
I just want to see Turbo Granny.
Not played Soul Hackers. How is it compared to SJ/SMT4?
I really hope Sega someday allows for cameos, shared assets, or a crossover between Yakuza and SMT (Devil Summoner in particular).
The fact they both take place in Japan with modern cities along with spinoffs of Japan in the late 1800s/early 1900s (Raidou 1/2, Yakuza Kenzan/Ishin) just feels like it'd be right.

>>253712685
Raidou games were the first Devil Summoner games I played. I loved 2 and played 1 afterward. I can completely understand why fans of the original titles won't like them, but I think it unfair to bash the PS2 titles for being their own thing. They nail the presentation of the era and have very snazzy soundtracks. The gameplay in 2 is some of the best in any SMT game I've played so far as well.
>>253714743
Definitely older than SJ (the closer comparision of the two) but it has a few unique aspects to it.
Worth a play, but if you beat SJ, consider playing on Hard Mode unless you're just in it for the plot.
>>253714743
>tfw I haven't played SMT1 SMT2 SMT:DS SMT:DS:SH Raidou1 or 2, or Strange Journey

>>253714743
A lot easier.
>>253714995
Easier than SJ, or SMT4? Because 4 was a hell lot easier than SJ.
>>253714969
SMT1 and 2 are generally emulated with the English patch, unless you feel like playing SMT1 on iOS (apparently the localization isn't too bad there). Rom up and you can delay on that job.But don't, no one likes a shut-in for too long
>>253714969
>I need a job
then you won't have time
>Are you willing to give everything in order to take down the Phantom Society?
>answering yes gets Spooky killed
This game just pretty much takes all of the stereotypical good guy RPG choices and shows the ramifications of them, doesn't it?
>>253713939
It's not just fujoshi, and both Raidou games are pretty much custom written to appeal to gay otaku and fujoshi. It's not like DS1 and Soul Hackers don't have a little bit of that kind of writing in places, though.
>no, not the PS2 travesty
Ha.
>>253715092
I heard that the iOS and Android versions have translations that make the references in SMTIV to earlier games easier to understand
>>253715078
Not that anon, but SH at the least has a better difficulty curve than IV. By the time I got to Tokyo, I was beating every boss in four turns or less.
SH is definitely not as hard as SJ, though.
>>253714969
>tfw Atlus is just PS2 Classic'ing all of the PS2 SMTs instead of a proper port job to PS3/PS4/Vita
One of my first SMT, after Raidou. I thought it was pretty hard and I took a long time to finish it.
The battle system is fun, I love the setting, Nemissa is a great character and after finishing it all other SMT games I played were pretty easy. 9/10
>>253715191
>It's not like DS1 and Soul Hackers don't have a little bit of that kind of writing in places, though.
SH has Beta, and I guess Spooky would be appealing to them, but what was in DS1? I can't recall anything.
>>253715078
Both. SH hard mode is easier than IV normal mode.
>>253715687
But IV is ridiculously easy. Flynn can pretty much singlehandedly kill bosses.
>>253715827
Like Nemissa?
IV was hard at the beggining. I can count how many times I died in SH in my fingers and I'll need only one hand. It's probably the easiest MegaTen after SMT I.
>>253715191
>Tell my Jap friend I like Raidou, JoJo, and FKMT stuff
>He assumes I'm gay and recommends me weirdass manga about muscular men and some other homoerotic stuff
It makes me laugh thinking about it even if it was awkward at first.
Toward the Terra was good though even if was pretty gay.
>>253715573
Both games have Madame Ginko. Contrary to what the wiki tells you, it's not just a rumor that he's a man. He's voiced by Tomokazu Sugita in the 3DS version of SH, after all.
>>253715492
Yeah, I don't get the people saying it's one of the easiest Megatens.
I had almost zero problems with any Persona game outside of P1 SQQ, IV, and Devil Survivor 2, but I remember Shemyaza being a huge pain in the ass.
>tfw there'll never be another Strange Journey style spinoff in terms of story setup
>>253716478
Maybe it's because of how people build their characters? I went full retard and put a lot of STR into MC and almost nothing on Luck/Mag, which made me lose a LOT of times to mamudo and similar instakill attacks. Got a fuck ton of game over screens.
>>253684614
I think it was 7/10 at best and I wouldn't have paid money for it if I had a time machine.
>>253716694
Isn't its story standard mainline fare, though?

I actually had to stop to stare at my screen when I saw that, because I couldn't believe he was taunting me mid-battle like that in a game where bosses generally don't have dialogue in battle.

>>253716951
Devil Survivor if you're into an SRPG take on the series. And a one dimensional teen cast
>>253716951
Only other 3(DS) one is Soul Hackers
Devil Summoner 1 and 2 are good games, but they are Strategy RPGs (think Fire Emblem)
>>253716731
Oh, probably. I just remembered that I barely gave my Hacker any Lu during my first playthrough, and Lu is the best stat in that game.

>>253716792
>>253717123
I liked the scifi angle to things.
>>253716951
Try out Soul Hackers next, then. The only other options really are Devil Surivor 1 and 2, and personally I wasn't a big fan of those since they're strictly SRPGs (no dungeons/demon negotiation/etc) and quite slow.
Meanwhile Soul Hackers is a first person dungeon crawler like SJ, but significantly faster. You move Doomguy speeds, battles are faster, it's paced quicker, etc.
>>253684614
Spent too much time playing the poker minigame grinding up money and mag that I forgot the rest of the game and never finished it.
I should get around to it one of these days.

Devil Survivor: Overclocked

>>253717329
With way worse story and characters.
>>253717387
I only played Survivor 1. How the fuck did they make an even worse cast in 2? I liked 1's setup, but the characters were bland, bland, bland.
>>253717163
Almost every Megaten game has a "sci fi angle." The only exceptions I can think of are the non-DDS PS2 games, all of which I didn't like as much, incidentally.
>>253716951
Ha, mention DS and the DeSu kids come out of the woodwork.
>>253717459
Make the whole thing a joke, throw out all of the life threatening atmosphere and replace it with SOL and Evangelion bullshit.
>>253717459
It's like the difference between P3's cast and P4's. Way more pandering to waifu and husbandofags.
Question: can I still buy the demons I fused from the compendium on NG+?
It's a major shame that Soul Hackers didn't come out in America when it was new for PSX or Sega Saturn. The "oldness" of the game wouldn't have been so true then, and I think it would have been better appreciated. I mean, Persona 1 got a niche audience for it's setting and themes, and that game was kinda shitty, made worse by a terrible localization effort.
By the time Soul Hackers came out on PSX, it likely would have gotten a bump in quality similar to what Persona 2:EP got, and probably would be more appreciated by the fandom at large today.
>>253717072
Tbh though, it's pretty split between srpg conventions and JRPG conventions, since teams have to go through 1 or 2 (or maybe 3 in DS2) rounds of combat when they meet. If you've played the SNES game Bahamut Lagoon, it's kinda like that.
>>253717635
Yep.
>>253717604
Oh, the same reason I couldn't get into P4. Good thing I didn't play it then.
>>253717525
>Ha, mention DS and the DeSu kids come out of the woodwork.
Yeah, because it's not like it's the only other handheld SMT game besides SJ/SMT4/SH on the given platforms.
>>253717525
DeSu, Devil Summoner?
It's nice to see Soul Hackers still has fans. The fanbase usually gets drowned out in general SMT threads by Persona 3/4, Nocturne, SJ, and SMT4.
>>253717072
are DS 1 and 2 closer to like, disgaea or FE? I'm not into really grindy SRPGs even though I love dungeon crawl grinding
>>253717820
thank you kind anon
>>253717997
The only grinding is to unlock skills really. You unlock them by beating a demon that has them so sometimes you do unlimited side missions a couple of times to collect all the skills.
>>253717970
Yeah, it's nice to finally see a successful SH thread.
