The enemy designs were very cool and unMario-like, which I think works in the game's favor. The opening of the game has you doing the normal Mario thing of going to Bowser's castle, only to have extra-dimensional invaders steal the show. It's a very fun and clever way of cluing you in to the fact that this won't be a normal Mario adventure.
Mario games were radically different in every Mario game, so at the time, another unfamiliar world posing as "the Mushroom Kingdom" didn't bother me. Some of the designs were fun and strange, like Margarita, Bellome, and the Smithy Gang.
I'll take functional and bog-standard over the tedium of Bowser's Inside Story (which after several games, it feels like the SS-formula is just worn out). BIS is padded with lots of unfun activities and the writing is generally not very good, which makes the simplicity and straight-forwardness of SMRPG much more appealing.

I get that one of the appeals of Mario RPGs is their accessibility to people who usually hate turn based combat and party systems, but SMRPG is one of the most nicely polished RPGs I've ever played. Moreso than either of its successors.

Except for the enemy designs, I really liked Squaresoft's palette and otherwise aesthetic rendition of the Mario World.
And we all know SE is a shadow of its former self, and Nintendo would do everything in its power to make it completely generic by reusing assets.
I still like to think it could have kept going, though. I still toy with the idea of a sequel in my mind. It could happen, and still work.
If M&L's batshit insanity can work and no one blinks an eye, I think an equally comfy SMRPG2 wouldn't push any envelopes and would fit just fine.

I played the SNES all the time as a kid, but unfortunately it was my sister's. When she went to college she took it and all the games with it Some of my favorites like Aladdin, Joe and Mac 2, and Super Mario All-Stars were lost to her. However, I hid these two from her and I guess she didn't notice. I still don't have a SNES to play them on, but they're gonna remain mine forever. SMRPG represents some of the best parts of my childhood.
Also, I still haven't managed to beat Toy Story. The farthest I ever got was Sid's workshop, and that happened only one time.
