It was pretty centered on the two of them, who they are, and how they contrast each other. Tracer the heroic idealist coming in guns ablazing vs Widowmaker the patient professional. They're being touted as rivals who are polar opposites but they seem to share a level of humor. Widowmaker says she's annoyed by Tracer, but she is amused as well, calling her sweet and foolish, poking fun at her "love" with "cherie". She doesn't seem to want to kill Tracer either, even though it's the kill that excites her - she waits for Tracer to recover before turning to pick up her weapon and leave.

It's not perfectly clear who knew who. Pharah's mom was an early member, Mercy would've been 6 or 7 (and Pharah two years younger than that) when Pharah's mom was doing missions with Overwatch. They didn't contact Mercy until she was an adult doing medical research in a Swiss hospital, and she didn't immediately join them because she saw them as a military group. I suspect Pharah's mom may be dead now based on how some characters talk about her, so it's possible Mercy never knew her.

Tried some of these and they left me fairly unsatisfied. Nothing against the writing or the scenarios, just didn't quite click for me.
I generally like the idea of them just enjoying a somewhat colorful, but still serious rivalry, but eventually those playful jabs here and there began to chip away the professionalism and sense of duty, until one day a serious close call for one of them wakes up something deep within the other.
Then it's all lust andangstfrom that point on.
Something interesting popped up on /v/ earlier regarding overwatch. Height approximations for most of the ladies with some mention of Tracer's official listed height being about 1.62m making Tracer rather short. Probably short enough to bury her face in Widow's boobs without bending down. D.Va, despite not being listed, was figured to be close to Tracer in height. No idea about Mei.

It amazes me how perfectly this old picture captures their characters for me.
Tracer on her knees, wide eyed and eager. While Widow just casually letting her younger lover grab fistfuls of her proud assets, one hand gently holding onto Tracer's lean but athletic frame for support and expression remains mysteriously out of view.
All the secret rendez-vous they must have dared under the watchful eyes of their respective organizations. All the sweet nothings, both in sensual French and disgusting Brit noise, they whispered to each other while their hot and lukewarm bodies mingled together in some abandoned countryside villa or hidden safe house.
Someday, their lies will grow too big to hide, but at least for tonight, the only thing that matters is assmunching.

As enticing as the idea of a Widow that's always in control sounds, I also really dig the scenario where she's kind unhinged in certain areas.
Not exactly outright yandere, and she would never make a scene in public or draw attention to herself, but just the idea that falling for Tracer messes with her mental conditioning in a way that makes her do some very questionable, albeit subtle, things that don't seem outrageous at first, but upon closer inspection and connecting the dots, you'd realize how deep she's in love and how cray her current state of mind can be. Normal isn't a bad thing obviously and it's not that hard to come up with prompts for story scenarios for them, but Widowtracer's backgrounds practically write themselves into fics and their positions as the faces of the franchise, with even crossover appearances, also just mean more fan content in general.

Anon please. They're professional women in their 30's, who have seen the horrors of war, witnessed the bravery of heroes and felt the kindness of strangers first hand. Blushing, sure. But accepting a date like awkward teenagers would be so unbelievably out of character for them.
This is a legit problem with these two honestly. The idea of a dark, tall career soldier with her perfect Aryan waifu is a feast for the eyes, but they got nothing to work with. Also their backgrounds are kind wonky. Being only a few years apart in age yet Mercy appears to have known Pharah's mom quite well. The only possible scenario being that Pharah's mom was in Overwatch well into her 50's while Pharah was still being a security dyke for that company.

Mercy was picked up and put into Overwatch rather quickly from what I remember. After the war of course, but it was still rather fast. Pharah on the other hand, was climbing the ranks in the egyptian military and was on the track for joining Overwatch through military channels when it collapsed. The collapse or whatever, probably caused Ana to disappear/die/whatever but it makes sense that Ana was probably in her forties or so when Mercy joined. Probably as a vet and advisor since she was part of the original overwatch team.
Pharah going to work for Helix was a result of Overwatch collapsing more than faffing about and not wanting to work there. The problem is that Pharah wouldn't readily know Mercy while Mercy would have 2nd hand experience with Pharah through Ana.

Omnic Crisis and original Overwatch formation were around 30 years prior to the game, making Mercy around 7 at the time. If we assume they don't recruit children, they wouldn't have picked her up until she was at least 18 or 19, a good few years after the Crisis ended. However, they weren't interested in her work until she was already head surgeon at a major hospital and made a breakthrough in nanobiology that helped her cure some nasty shit. AND she didn't want to join them right away, because they seemed too militaristic for her liking.
So, I think it's a safe bet that she joined Overwatch pretty late into its lifespan. Could've been as short as three or four years before its dissolution. As for Pharah, I can see something like this:

Reasonable enough for both bits, yeah while she(Mercy) joined it was more of a practical use to help people and probably advance healing. However, all this speculating and working up a background to connect them kind of comes off as Mercy having a bit of a crush on Ana. That and Mercy being one of the first to treat Pharah as her own person could make for some fun stuff.

Well, wasn't there an official image/video of her in a research lab of some kind? They had to have stabilized her somehow while they researched and came up with the solution.
So my headcanon would be something like:
1. Tracer disappears from the accident
2. Reappears randomly
3. They study traces of her and modified one of the medical/science facility room to "contain" her properly
4. She finally re-appears in there and stabilize.
5. Winston comes up a way to replicate the effect of the room into a little harness she can carry

I think this is a good setup for some angst, because I suspect Amelie is permanently gone.
Unlike the Winter Soldier who was apparently just programmed to follow orders, Widowmaker actually enjoys the kill, which makes it seem like Amelie was just erased and replaced with Widowmaker (unless Amelie had a penchant for murder). She may even still have Amelie's memories, if that story about being afraid of spiders is true.

The problem is that Blizzard really do like to comment on these "useless" areas and Zarya is the result of that. Whether you care about these "issues" or not, here's a little history for those who may not be aware:
At Blizzcon, Chris Metzen, the creative boss at Blizzard, alleged that he had an epiphany when his young daughter pointed at a certain World of Warcraft cinematic and asked him why are all the ladies wearing swimsuits. Stuttering to come up with a good answer for her, he vowed that Blizzard would do female characters right from now on.
Of course soon after, they unveil Overwatch, featuring a varied cast of male characters ranging from gorillas to robot ninjas, and a smaller female cast that was just a bunch of hot chicks, oh and Widow's expanding ass. Par for the course when it comes to most games featuring a big cast, but because of Metzen's prior comment, there was a much bigger reaction than normal.
Whether intentional or not, Blizzard soon introduced Zarya, accompanied by a very cringe press release that was so pandering to the social justice crowd that it was practically insulting to read for anyone who laid eyes on it. To this day I still can't figure out if they were being dense or intentionally tongue in check.
So, yea, there you have it. Even though I don't particularly care for Zarya or "muh representation", I really don't think the boys at Blizzard are savvy enough to do this right, whatever the "right" way actually is.

Being pro gamers, if they still are, probably gives them quite a bit of free time throughout the year and outside of practice sessions to still be proficient with the MEKA they're probably free to go back to their normal lives.
