I'm not opposed to threesome relationships on principle, I just don't get how they'd work. Fiction isn't very helpful either, since even when threesomes happen, it's practically always at the very end.

I guess the closest thing would be open relationships (polyamory?), where both partners are aware and consent to loving another person. It's not 2 people and a third wheel; everyone gets equal participation.
Slightly related, if only love triangles would actually bother to develop the "opposing" person as a likeable character--thus genuinely making it difficult to choose one ship over the other--instead of serving only as a relationship plot device for Persons A and B to reaffirm their feelings for each other. It's even better if they all get along; no hard feelings involved.

That's what Yuru Yuri is doing with the Ayano/Kyouko/Yui triangle, though I doubt it'll ever be resolved.

Yes. These are the type of questions where you can use your imagination to come up with many different scenarios and as long as they are remotely possible the true answer will be "all of the above".

Polyamory is no more shallow than any other relationship. Which is to say that sometimes it is, but no more often than couples who don't really care about each other. True love between more than 2 people can and does exist.

I don't think I can really form a complete enough picture just via imagination, though. I've spent all my life watching monogamous relationships in fiction and real life, with some occasional first-hand experience, so I have at least some kind of model of how such relationships work that I can use for shipping purposes.
