i ship benben, yatsuhashi, and raiko together as a threesome (yatsuhashi deserves to be included in the yuri love too), although benben and raiko by themselves are really cute too. i agree that it is a shame there is not more art of raiko. raiko has such a cool design.

>>1948609
The printed works
>>1943776
I used to depend primarily on doujin to familarize myself with Touhou characters. You end up mostly knowing memes and shit but that's what tends to drive the fandom.
However, there's been a stready decline in the number of Touhou doujin artists over the years. The characters went from having basically no backstory like the SDM group to the most recent games with relately detailed backstories, which means fewer gaps for doujin artists to fill. You could have a hundred different takes on who Sakuya is but basically everyone latched onto the saintly "youkai and humans living in harmony" image given to Byakurrn even though canonically she wouldn't trust humans if not hate them.
Also a lot of the most recognizable artists seem to have either retired, moved on to fresh material, or have started original stories.
It's kind of depressing but at the same time it's a part of life
>>1948786
I prefer the characters as they are in the games.
While the earlier games didn't have much backstory, the characters were much, much less stereotypical.
This is especially noticeable in Alice.
In the games where they do interact, she and Marisa both snark at each other quite a bit. It gives the impression that they don't always see each other but they're comfortable with each other when they do.
In fanon Alice is just a generic tsundere.
>>1948801
You must be reading the wrong stuff.
>>1948452
Source? That sounds like the best thing ever, so I don't believe one word of it.
>>1948786
>The characters went from having basically no backstory like the SDM group to the most recent games with relately detailed backstories, which means fewer gaps for doujin artists to fill.
This is nonsense. Just because the west didn't have the bios translated doesn't mean they didn't exist.
But they did. The amount of backstory to fill has never changed - in fact, many of the earlier characters had much LESS room to fill than recent ones.
Why are western fans always so retarded to think that translated stuff = all that ever existed?
>>1948768
I was hoping for a slightly more specific suggestion than that.

http://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Cirno#Three_Fairies_of_Light
Its already canon that after meeting the Three Fairies of Light, Cirno started to ignore Daiyousei and Daiyousei was pissed enough about it to attack Cirno in Fairy Wars.
More specifically Cirno was seen together with Luna in a crowd scene in Wild and Horned Hermit.
So the basis has already been laid down.
If I were a betting man, I would wager that only Daiyousei sees the relationship as romantic/sexual. It would be the typical Touhou response.
And really the whole thing is an attempt to explain why Daiyousei fought Cirno in Fairy Wars, when virtually the whole fandom already were convinced they were a couple.
>>1943195
>>1943196
So is this a rival ship or a 3p situation?
>>1950132
I usually see it as either as straight rival Hestia/Clownpiece or with Clownpiece in the daughter role rather than a 3P.
>>1950137
A lot of people see them as a family.
I like that interpretation myself, as it breaks what is at this point a tradition of pairing master and subordinate.
This is a new pair. The dream eating tapir and the one winged angel.
>>1951065

>>1952893
I don't think Yukari is interested in another dead wife.
Reimu's power stems from her being human.
In spite of her OP hax its far from clear that Reimu has any magic of her own and is simply not a vessel to transmit the power of the gods. So she has to remain a mortal at least until she has an heiress. So she will probably die a mortal.
And after Renko and Yuyuko, I don't think Yukari wants to go through that again.
>>1953208
I prefer to think Yukari is only attracted to mortals.
>>1953208
Nobody know what goes on in Yukari's head.
I'd imagine she just has an unfortunate tendency to have all her pursued relationships end in tragedy some way or another.Though it probably will stop after Reimu bites it.

What's the most popular pairing with Byakuren?
>>1960293
If I had to guess I'd say Miko
>>1960303
Looks cute, care to explain their dynamic? haven't played 10 oh desires yet.
>>1960315
I'm secondary as fuck but I think they are rivals in the religious war game and somehow both of them adopted Kokoro as their daughter
>>1960315
>>1960320
Yeah they're rivals. In TD, Byakuren builds her new temple above Miko's mausoleum to inhibit her from resurrecting, since Miko had been dormant for a few hundred years with Futo and Tojiko, waiting to become Taoist hermits. Buddhist monks had been doing similar things to stop Miko (and Taoism) over those years, but it didn't work this time and Miko still resurrects.
Regarding Kokoro, the daughter dynamic comes from her set of masks being commissioned by Miko when she was the crown prince and from Byakuren offering her help to control her emotions (through Buddhism). Both characters took an interest in assisting Kokoro, so it adds to the rival thing.
>>1960315
They hate each other because they each want to propagate a different religion, and each wishes that the other's group would have never come to Gensokyo.
So obviously that means they must actually want to fuck each other.
>>1960320
>>1960322
Thanks, and damn guess Shou can't do much againt a daughter and will have to content with her mouse.
>>1960322
I believe Miko has a deeper connection to Kokoro.
Yup. I just checked the wiki:
>While she was still alive, Miko created the 66 masks which Kokoro was born from. Miko later makes Kokoro a new mask of hope to replace her lost one. However, Kokoro discarded this mask, as its stabilising effect was so powerful that it would eventually cause her to turn back into a set of inanimate objects. Her feelings towards Miko over this are unknown.
>>1960340
Ah yeah, forgot to mention that. I find it weird though that Kokoro never brings it up afterwards, considering what Miko was trying to do.
>>1960340
Meanwhile Kokoro is finding koi with Koishi...

>>1960516

>>1960633
Satori and Byakuren both think the relationship is therapeutic for the both of them.
They both encourage it.
If Satori detected lewd thoughts like that from EITHER of them, she would be happy as it would be an improvement in either ones condition.

In some aspects, this story line has been set back a bit. Because here we see Daiyousei hanging out at Cirno's igloo like nothing has happened. So either the Great Fairy War has not happened in this continuation or it has passed some time ago and all the involved parties have forgotten it.
So does Daiyousei know about Cirno and Luna hanging out together like was shown in WaHH? Or is that going to be ignored too?

ZUN hardly considers Dai a character. Just compare the treatment her and Koakuma got compared to other midboss only characters like Momiji. Momiji is a boss in DS and gets her own profile in SoPM while the others just get small cameos. The two of them don't get backstory info in the EoSD omake text too. Hell ZUN even said that Dai doesn't really have a name in his former bulletin board. So I wouldn't get too worried about Dai, she's pretty much only there when ZUN needs a extra fairy that isn't Cirno or the three fairies of light.
The bulletin board in question

That ship seems weirdly popular here. There's at least a few posters always talking about it. I'm fine with any Yuuka pairing myself, the world needs more sunflower in general.

>>1971320
Yukka and Meiling is a nice fringe pairing I've seen here and there. Seems cute enough.
>>1971623
Well in this posts particular example Yuuka would definitely make the first move, initially just as a tease and moving onto something more serious later.
I like to imagine she comes to the Mansion occasionally just to boss Meiling around and to make sure she's taking care of all the garden's flowers correctly.

>Marisa/Alice
Marisa, and she makes a huge spectacle of it, which sort of annoys Alice, and the whole thing devolves into a snarking match.
>Reimu/Yukari
Yukari says a bunch of stuff teasingly, but when Reimu actually takes her up on it she's pretty easily swept away.
>Yuugi/Parsee
What >>1971701 said basically.
Parsee isn't too good at the whole self-esteem thing (to Yuugi's confusion).
>Mokou/Keine
Keine. Mokou still has her issues with getting close to people, so it's up to Keine to pull her in.
>Yuyuko/Youmu
Youmu, because she's completely oblivious to Yuyuko's flirting until Yuyuko explains it to her later.
>Kanako/Suwako
I'd say the "first move" was Kanako invading Suwako's shrine, so I'll give that one to her.
>Yuuka/Elly
Yuuka. Because she's Yuuka, so she does what she wants.

Just give me my happiness of the moment. Don't harsh my romance buzz with the morbid inevitability of death and decay I don't NEED this existential BULLSHIT in the middle of my girl on girl lovey doveyness.
Am I a bad person for trying out all different kinds of pairings, even for a single character, for the purpose of creative pursuits and exercises?
With all of them being completely separate from one another of course.
>>1971623
I like to think most Touhou relationships start (and end) in drunken hazes, so no one can really tell.

>>1972655
>What if it's exactly what you need?
I don't think I understand what you mean.
I mean sure some pairs work well to explore those kinds of concepts, doesn't mean the story needs to shift decades if not centuries into the future with one character dying/dead, after they've barely gotten to the point of "Hey, we're in a relationship now!".
At least give em a honeymoon before you start setting up a grave.
>>1971623
Koishi, though I imagine both are just fumbling their way through it since they don't quite understand it.

Author is pretty great but some other stories are soul crushing too. Now I'm kinda scared to read more of them. Don't wanna get depressed for whole week.
Also this is Touhou. Let a Youkai or something bit Keine and make her immortal too.
>>1972624
It's sort of inescapable with Mokou pairings other than Kaguya, since immortality angst is such a huge part of Mokou's character.
The one that bugs me is when they do it to Marisa, since she's canonically done work on an immortality potion and may be trying to magician-youkai herself.
>>1972732
Yeah, Reimu's going to kill her if she tries it.
>>1972737
It's possible to fanwank that one way or another.
Kosuzu is painting a target on her ass, though.
>>1972720
>Let a Youkai or something bit Keine and make her immortal too.
Considering how the Hourai Elixir works, Keine could just eat Mokou's liver. Or, more likely, Mokou could retrieve Kaguya's.
(Though I suppose that would require Mokou setting aside her "immortality is a curse" mindset long enough to give it to someone she cares about.)

>>1972653
Nothing wrong with that. Especially in this fandom where I doubt there will ever be canon relationships.
Even the obvious contenders like Miko x Tojiko or Suika x Kasen, both are likely married couples because of who they are based on, are unlikely to ever be confirmed.
>>1972737
This could be a reason she lives out in the forest away from the village.
>>1972405
Probably not, at least not openly.
Western writefags aren't much of a thing in Touhou.
>>1972891
I've been trying to work on some things myself, but I don't have much experience in writing anything really so its been slow goings.
Mostly working through my own mental blocks is slowing down progress.
>>1972732
I get that its an inevitable thing with a bunch of the pairings (Meiling x Sakuya its very common as well), but its not like people in real life get together and immediately start thinking about the future where one of them is going to die first and the other is going to spend the rest of their years alone.
I'm okay with a story that explores those ideas and has the characters trying to deal with them, I just don't like it when it gets shoved into otherwise happy stories right at the end for that one last soulwrench.
>>1972891
I've done some stuff, not much recently, but I writefag semi-regularly for two other /u/ threads already.
And as you say, Touhou fandom isn't that big on western ficfags in general.
>>1972928
>Meiling x Sakuya
I liked that story where Remilia made them both into vampires. Mortality problem solved.
>>1972942
>both
Meiling's already a youkai, though.
But yeah, "Remilia turns Sakuya" is the obvious solution to any Sakuya pairing. Plus she's very much an outsider from the Gensokyo humans, so it probably won't bring down Reimugeddon.
>>1972944
>But yeah, "Remilia turns Sakuya" is the obvious solution to any Sakuya pairing.
The only really problematic ones are Keine and Reimu, because they don't have the obvious fixes.
Sakuya is turned, Marisa becomes a magician, Youmu's human half dies so she just becomes a full ghost, Sanae's already a minor deity.
>>1972845
>Suika x Kasen
Those two have a history eh? I have more of a soft spot for Kasen x Reimu though.
>>1972949
Suika is based on Shuten-douji or Ibuki-douji, one of the more infamous oni in Japanese mythology. Yuugi is based on Hoshikuma-douji, one of Shuten-douji's closer subordinates, and per Touhou canon the two were part of the Oni leadership together.
Kasen, if the heavy implication that she's an oni proves true, would get her name from Ibaraki-douji, who in some stories is Shuten-douji's wife.
>>1972953
>Kasen is avoiding Suika now
Must've been a very bad breakup.
>>1972953
>heavy implication
Someone needs to scrape Wild and Horned Hermit for all the obivous "nudge nudge, know what I mean, say no more" moments and collage them or something.
I feel like there was at least one a chapter, though the Setsubun chapter had pretty much nothing but.
>>1972977
Suika doesn't seem too angry with her.
>>1972953
>Kasen, if the heavy implication that she's an oni proves true, would get her name from Ibaraki-douji, who in some stories is Shuten-douji's wife.
To elaborate a bit more on this theory, the legend of Ibaraki-douji includes a rather crucial element: Ibaraki-douji is known to have lost an arm in a battle against a group of humans trying to wipe out Shuten-douji's band; after seeing Shuten-douji struck down, Ibaraki-douji fled and was the only survivor.
Ibaraki-douji then infiltrated the attacker's home in the guise of a human woman to steal back the severed arm. Sound familiar?
Man, all this speculation is flying over my head. Guess now's a good time to pick up WaHH.
>>1973016
WaHH and FS are both definitely worth reading. It's nice that ZUN is going for more plot in Touhou (without the clusterfuck that was SSIB).
>>1972845
It would be pretty dumb if you could avoid the punishment for breaking a major taboo like that by moving away from the village for a bit.
>>1972891
There's some pretty good Western fanfics, though. This one seems particularly promising: http://archiveofourown.org/works/5843659/chapters/13468438
>>1973022
>It would be pretty dumb if you could avoid the punishment for breaking a major taboo like that by moving away from the village for a bit.
The thing with Gensokyo is that so much of it depends upon the perceptions of the humans in the village. The jinyou who Reimu executed was explicitly a normal citizen of the village before becoming a youkai, and said as much; Marisa, meanwhile, has been gone from the village for her entire adult life, so she's already something of an outsider. She's definitely not seen as a resident of the village.
Sure, it's basically conflict-avoidance fanwank but it's Touhou, all the powers already run on semantic wiggle room.
>>1972737
What would Reimu kill her? Just wondering, I barely touched the games, only read some stories.

It probably has to do with keeping the humans separate from, and afraid of, the youkai. Youkai need human fear to exist, if all the humans become youkai, poof.

The problem with Sakuya becoming a Vampire is that it just doesn't seem like something she'd want to do.
For starters she seems to prefer her place as a human (this is brought up in Imperishable Night when they discuss eating Mokou's liver), as though she wants to remain "below" Remilia.
There's also the fact that, being a newly turned Vampire, her long list of incredibly varied weaknesses would be turned up to 11 for at least a couple centuries. She'd have to rely pretty much entirely on Meiling or the fairies (ha) to do anything involving going outside during the daytime. She would also add to the number of bloodsuckers living in the Mansion, who may also need blood more often than Remilia and Flandre at first, which may complicate relations with the human village or whatever unknown food supply source they seem to have.

I imagine its more a matter of keeping the balance of things. They don't want the village humans turning into Youkai left and right because that'd fuck everything up. So she just slaps it down then and there.

>whatever unknown food supply source they seem to have.
WaHH pretty much confirms Yukari's feeding the youkai with humans from outside.
>>1973043
That's probably why the doujin has Remilia do it to Sakuya against her will.
>>1973047
Ah yes, of course.
This is where the awkward disconnect comes in between the cute animu girls being cute together, and the fact that many of them all eat human flesh on a daily basis. Its a bit of a balancing act to pull off.
>>1973052
Well that's just Remilia being shitty then.

>It would be pretty dumb if you could avoid the punishment for breaking a major taboo like that by moving away from the village for a bit.
The phrase "from the village" is pretty crucial as far as human/youkai relations go. In CILR Yukari specifically says that youkai won't eat humans "from the village". So possibly one can renounce village human status, but doing so makes you a target for youkai. Doing so after becoming a youkai isn't enough.

Wouldn't that imply that any youkai is free to kill Marisa?
>>1973070
Maybe. But then, she's second only to Reimu.
>>1973066
Does those cute girls really eat humans?
>>1973072
At fighting spell card duels, maybe. Gensokyo is full of beings who could easily crush her if they went all out. You'd think something like that would have been mentioned at least once in canon.

I've personally been working with the idea thatSakuya actually drinks Remilia's blood and becomes a Ghoul in the Vampire: The Masquerade sense. It pretty easily explains the idea that she's been serving Remilia for a very long time, makes her aging a non-issue, and allows her to remain her humanity enough to still jive with the events after they arrive in Gensokyo. I've never even seen this idea explored anywhere else.

That's where things get kind of weird when you bring in the spellcard rules. Can youkai just attack humans without needing to mess with a duel? If they do duel and the youkai wins does that mean they get to eat the human? How do the youkai know the difference between humans from the outside world (that they're free to eat supposedly) and the humans from the village?

Its uh, really one of those things that's kind of implied and is part of the underlying basics of the setting, but its not really acknowledged very much and is yet to be shown at all.
