Just finished reading Homura's Revenge. When I started reading I was already dreading how they were going to end it, after all what would stop Homura from just grabbing Madoka (and any other surviviing characters) and trying over if the timeline doesn't work out. Instead we get barely any reason whatsoever, besides Madoka deciding to stay because muh abandoned timeline. Which by all means should just add to Homura's despair, as it means all of her abandoned timelines still exist somewhere, and all the abandoned, dead or witched out Madoka do too.
But this still Isn't any reason for her not to try again with another Madoka next timeline, and actually fucking work together explaining things to the others. I do not understand why she abandoned this timeline in the first place. Both Madoka and Kyouko live and the city is saved. So what if madoka made a contract, she lived through it, and as the strongest magical girl it shouldn't be hard for her to get enough griefseeds and provide for her friends. This was by far the most positive ending Homura got from all the timelines we've seen. I mean, it's been previously established that Homura doesn't actually care that much about what happens to the world, as long as Madoka is save. And it's not like madoka will live forever if she doesn't contract. This way the both of them could have lived comfortably for as long as they wanted, possibly until the end of the world, and then witch out together, the latter being one of Homuras own suggestions in an earlier timeline.
I either missed something or this ending was stupid.

I'm aware but that in itself is a contradiction as madoka will die at some point in the future anyway. And there have been numerous timelines where Madoka became a magical girl and Homura continued it, trying to defeat walmart night with her. It was only after she realised Madoka couldn't defeat it without witching that she decided she'd have to prevent her from contracting in the first place. But all went right this time, so there shouldn't have been much reason to reset.

I did read a review earlier in which Urobuchi stated that he felt he has never truly had Madoka be an active character on the series. Rather than a passive plot device, I think we will actually see Madoka play the role of the protagonist she was meant to be.

If Homura decided to protect Madoka by locking her in a massive labrynth to insure her safety through ignorance, she would not consider helping Madoka do something dangerous.
By helping Madoka, Homura (?) is accepting that Madoka is strong enough to face battle. Rather then hold her back to protect her, she is standing with Madoka against whatever new threat they face.
If the Clara Dolls are a reflection of Homura's emotional state, then I believe their offering of assistance is an affirmation of Homura's acceptance of Madoka's wish to protect everyone.
Rather then protect her by keeping her ignorant, Homura will protect her on the battlefield.
This would bring resolution to the final character conflict of ther series.
Kyoko and Sayaka healed their wounds in the series.
Mami's loneliness and weakness created by it were solved by Nagisa.

Homura is neither a magical girl or witch. She cannot be taken in by the LoC. Madoka is confirmed to be lonely in heaven acting the LoC and is confirmed to be at least two parts.

Possible love-suicide is what I'm gathering. Le Cygne (The Dying Swan) is often quoted in choreography from Swan Lake, wherein the Prince becomes an hero to be with his swan waifu in Heaven. If Homura is a Siegfried allogory (love from first sight/taking a step in maturity/dedicating herself to Madoka's protection) her decision in Rebellion imprisoned Madoka forever. The devil outfit, resembling the Black Swan, means she made the wrong choice.
The white swan forgives Siegfried and affirms their love before they die and reunite heaven. Im okay with that for them.

I will throw out:
1. No one stays dead in this series. Even those that die continue to live on.
2. If part 1 of the TV series was a deconstruction of hope, then the second half was a reconstruction of hope. It's possible Rebellion is a deconstruction of love, while a sequel will be a reconstruction of said love. Madoka promised to never give up on Homura, and it looks like she's serious.
3. Urobuchi actually likes his character Madoka Kaname and laments that he hasnt used her more. Sayaka is the only one he enjoys kicking down.

I think the words you mean are either subversion or exploration. Deconstruction is a framework of reading literature examining the relationship between aspects of syntax, theme and semantics. It's annoyingly technical, and it really doesn't help that the person who coined the phrase wrote about in the most obfuscatory terms possible. But yeah, has nothing to do with storytelling. I was thinking about the 15th familiar, Ai. Is it confirmed that Ai is Devil Homura?
It has been speculated that Ai is Madoka because she left Homura. Ai is seen dressed as Madoka in the film. If Madoka's new soul gem is in her heart, it may signify that Madoka will fill the role of Ai.
Ai dresses like Homura in her classy tuxedo dress. Unlike the other familiars, Homura cant seem to manifest ai. Which leads me to believe Ai exists independently of Homura and Madoka, but is functionally non-existent.
Perhaps "ai" is her Eva-esque monster? If this is the case, then my theory is dead wrong.
Ai may also resemble Homura. Nagisa seems to be playing detective. Maybe Devil Homura is the manifestation of Ai. Homura's true body/soul is somewhere else in the labrynth (the suicide forrest). Ai may be key to Homura's defeat.
I'm of the opinion that Homura wants to die. Everything in her labrynth and attitude scream kill me.
And that I think will be the most interesting aspect of a sequel: Homura WANTS to die. How do you defeat Homura, who is god-tier at this point, without killing her?

Some obvious problems:
If Homura had just stayed in bed at the end of Rebellion, she would have died and lost her consciousness. She wouldnt have been reunited with Madoka in the traditional sense and tore Madoka away because she was more concerned about Madoka's loneliness.
If she dies and isn't saved by the Law of Cycles, her fate really isn't worse because she doesnt seem to care about that kind of salvation. The end result is she'd never be truly be reunited with Madoka anyways.
Now Madoka hates her? So what. Homura already hates herself. And in Rebellion, she already assumes Madoka will hate her.
This new movie basically comes down to Madoka's choice and declaring to never abandon Homu. But what does that mean? Homura already rejects the salvation of the LoC.
Madoka knows this. Madoka also hate rules that make her sad and has altered the universe before.
How angry do you think she'd be if she got her memories back? Sayaka was already dead to begin with. She'll get her back when she rejoins the LoC and resets the universe. She'll be more concerned about how to deal with the ASD Devil.
If Homura is revealed to be harnessing Kriemhild's powers (universal labrynth, Homu summons a winged monster, explaining ai yo) then the dualistic concept ending is more or less guaranteed. As corny/predictable as I think it is, that is the only option that wont result in something that defeats the entire purpose of an extension. It would erase the existence of Homura Akemi, which results in Homura never telling the incubators about Madokami or going on a devil rampage.
The other option is just annihilating Homura and the universe in a fit of Madokami despair, but again, why bother?

That's true. But it's not like they didn't make Rebellion with that intention. I became a fan after 2013, so all I see is post-Rebellion angst from people who abandoned ship rather than what the fan base was before. It doesn't seem like that's slowed anything down sales wise though.
I know that regardless of what happens (I'm leaning toward "Homura is Madoka's new half as the LoC") there's going to be some sort of shit storm. But unless the ending is completely vindicative to it's viewers and fan base, I can't imagine it destroying people's perceptions of the franchise that the series and Rebellion didn't.

The wide distribution and heavy promo effort seem to imply everyone involved thought it'd be a megahit. The movie had 50(!) different collectable advanced tickets released going in.
Personally, I think Kyoani just went in over their heads, thinking a very niche fujoshi show could have any sort of mass appeal. Sort of. I mean, it basically says that they've entered serious development and have been drawing concept art and storyboards. I don't think we'll get an official official announcement until production proper is underway (ie; key animation has begun), but it appears that the final stages of development are underway; presumably, the scenarios are semi-finalized, Ume's designs are probably finished, and they're in general agreement on where to go next. I think it's now just getting down to the nitty-gritty like specific dialog, boarding, division of episodes or acts in the case of a film, etc.

Don't forget that Rebellion had to be pulled out of nowhere essentially. The series ended with a pretty conclusive ending. Homura becoming a witch at the end was a prelude to Madoka taking her soul to heaven. Rebellion needed to "alter" this ending while at the same time respecting it.
Any Rebellion continuation will have Rebellion as a spring board. We already have a primary thematic conflict with Madoka v Homura and we already have z primary physical conflicts new Holy Quintet (to a greater extent Mami and Sayaka) v. Devil Homura. We've already developed most of the cast to the point where they wont need entire character arcs to grow.
I really dont think it will take longer than 2 years.
Madoka and her side of MadoHomu are what need the most development.

As do Mami and Nagisa. But we kind of already have their motivation: Mami is a rigid extremist. She's nice if you aren't oppose her world views. Nagisa is a part of the Law of Cycles. She has no attachment to Homura and probably wouldn't care if she died.
On the other hand, almost any KyoSaya sub plot would conclude their development. Sayaka becoming a justice bitch again would be rehashing old material.

Compare Kyoko from her introduction in episode 5 and to her big moment with Sayaka in Rebellion. She had a lot of development and got 2 full episodes dedicated to her character. Not all characters are created equally and deserving of equal screen time.
Nagisa to me is only as important to the plot as it relates to Mami. Unless her character just has a sudden awakening, she really has no other purpose, albeit an important one, than being Mami's emotional crutch.

I agree with Mami. As far as we know she's still the same extremist who killed her friends because they would eventually become witches. If she's as powerful as she is in the trailer, I can see her being the one to kill the witchified Sayaka if she still has that black and white mentality.
Mami has only superficially embodied the qualities of a hero.
In the poster (if it is relevant) she has her back turned toward the audience with a side glance.
Compare with our villian Homura, who is looking contemplatively, but doesnt give off a villianous aura despite where we are at this point in the series. Nor does she appear in her devil outfit.

By the way, having long ago argued in what now are effectively prehistoric times over how the follow up to Rebellion could and would not possibly begin with a conflict of Sayaka against Homura due to the mind wipe that Homura performed on her and its effects that were shown, with Homura and the clara dolls fading away from her view, and now with things moving pretty decisively in favor of this argument, with Sayaka apparently restrained and not shown doing much of anything at these new begginings. It sure feels good to be in the right.
