It's Korra in isolation, though. We don't know how she'll look compared to everyone else. Plus, without colour and shading, it's not fair to really judge.

>We don't know how she'll look compared to everyone else.
That doesn't matter. Compared to her own self in the cartoon, she looks too young. It's either the way her eyes drawn, her eyebrows or her hair. Probably a mixture of all three coupled with exaggerated emotions.

>colour and shading
Again, doesn't really matter. What makes her look younger are her expressions. They remind me of Saturday morning cartoons, the kind that opt for a more... well, "cartoonish" style of drawing instead of a more realistic one.

It's probably just me, but I'd rather them try to follow the style of the cartoon. Maybe it's because I'm more used to it.
>>
>>1925539
>What makes her look younger are her expressions
And the fact that she's for once really happe and in luuuuuuuurve
>>
>>1925504
They're going to really have to turn it up then because that Avatar State doesn't exude anything to me compared to the show one.
Korra's hips are not as prominent and her chest is somehow flatter. The art makes her look much younger too in terms of her face.

>>1925575
She was really happy towards the beginning once she got the hang of intro to airbending, still could have the opportunity to commune with her past lives eventually, hadn't met Amon, and got to play punch punch kick elemental dodgeball. It's just plain cartoony though considering Brittney Williams work it is to be expected and probably preferred by Mike as though children are actually going to read comics.
>>
>>1925600
>She was really happy
Don't fool yourself. She never was.
>>
>>1925539
I totally agree. Legend of Korra had an adult feel to it by the end of the series, and this feels like it's nearly going back to Aang's age. I hope it'll stick to its' mature atmosphere instead of going for cheap childish laughs and jokes....
>>
>>1925539
>Compared to her own self in the cartoon, she looks too young. It's either the way her eyes drawn, her eyebrows or her hair. Probably a mixture of all three coupled with exaggerated emotions.

If anything, it's reminiscent of the exaggerated facial expressions we often saw during Book One. I didn't like them there. But I'm actually more than willing to forgive them in a comic, because exaggeration of expressions and body language is crucial to communicating emotions and tone that could be conveyed by voice acting and animation in our fake chinese cartoon.

>colour and shading
>Again, doesn't really matter.

It does. The expression is the promary factor, but lighting can be used to emphasise a thoughtful (i.e. mature) expression, or to add a sense of gravitas. If done well, you barely notice it. If done poorly, it can really throw the viewer off (see Book One again, where the staging of much of the love triangle was set up incongruously to its actual importance or audience investment).

>It's probably just me, but I'd rather them try to follow the style of the cartoon.

It isn't just you. But unless they got Bryan or one of the key animators from Studio Mir over to do it, we were always going to have to accept a new style.

>It does.
Not in this case. Here, the style seems out of place because of the way she's drawn. I can't really explain it, it just *feels* off, mainly because of those eyes and eyebrows. Even with a masterfully done shading it's going to lean more on the cartoonish side. While at the same time, un-shaded (this isn't even a word, is it) screencaps from the cartoon still keep that... well, I wouldn't quite say "mature", but certainly older and calmer look.
I'm not trying to argue that it's not possible to make a character drawn in that kind of style look thoughtful or mature for a moment with a skilful use of coloring and shading, because you're right, it is very much possible. I'm saying that this particular character, Korra, doesn't look herself when drawn in that style. And it really ticks me off. I know that in the end I will have to either accept it or skip the comics entirely, but, hey, at least I can whine for a while.

I don't want to risk skirting the "mature cartoon for mature people such as myself line", but it's certainly true that some of the more child-friendly "humour" felt horribly out of place and forced in LoK. There's nothing wrong with physical comedy. Think of Korra airbending Mako, or Toph surprising Korra when the latter was trying to catch her off guard. They have a set-up and some value.

But then we get Meelo, who is sometimes amusing as the "little dictator", but cringe-inducing the rest of the time. He farted. That's the joke. Get it?
>>

>I'm saying that this particular character, Korra, doesn't look herself when drawn in that style.

That's a fair complaint. But these are just previews she likely hashed out just for the NYCC Darkhorse panel. I doubt that they're what convinced Mike and Bryan she was right for the job.

Yup, sounds about right, built my new computer then and immediately set out to get into LoK. I was marathoning entire books because I couldn't get enough of it and was having immense amounts of fun. I was enjoying every single aspect about LoK up until Kai. I also fell in line with most of Lok/u/'s opinions about the series on my own accord as well except the rampant hatred for Mako. I pretty much forgot about platonic galpal hand-holding when I saw the interaction between Mako and Lin.

Samurai then. They couldn't into money anyway. At least when it came to numer crunching. That's why merchants were tolerated.
>>
>>1925848
Same with both those groups near the time of the revolution. The big difference was they had special rights and power over other citizens by birth.

Some samurai at the start of the meiji era had basically nothing and lived off their stippens. Most were not particularly rich anymore. All still had the right to chop down any random peasant they wanted though.

In france before the revolution some of the bourgeois was starting to amass more wealth than the petty aristocracy who still had special rights above them.

The issue is an inherent power gained through birth that gives you special abilities and rights over other people regardless of your actual standing in society.
>>
>>1925853
This isn't legal power though. This is just a talent that others don't possess. Amon is basically Harrison Bergeron played straight. Only an SJW could like what he was peddling.

>The issue is an inherent power gained through birth that gives you special abilities and rights over other people regardless of your actual standing in society.
Chop the fingers off all piano playing privileged shitlords imo
>>
>>1925855
Yeah but the difference is he has the power to remove the the special ability from those people without really harming them in any other way. Apparently we're supposed to believe it's psychologically crippling to be a normal peasant but I don't buy it.

The show clearly tries to make him out to be just a revolutionary and not some kind of weird SJW. He doesn't want to make every equal in everything after all. He just wants to remove one specific inequality that has created a special kind of class system in that world.
>>
>>1925859
>Apparently we're supposed to believe it's psychologically crippling to be a normal peasant but I don't buy it.
It'd be like losing a limb. Of course it's psychologically harming. Like breaking a dancer's legs. "Oh but you can still walk and run, why are you whining?"

>The show clearly tries to make him out to be just a revolutionary and not some kind of weird SJW. He doesn't want to make every equal in everything after all. He just wants to remove one specific inequality that has created a special kind of class system in that world.
It's not actually a class system before he comes along though. All the legal differences were in reaction to him using benders as a scapegoat to raise mobs.
>>
>>1925855
>This isn't legal power though.
Definitely not, but the city also didn't really seem to manage a lot either, since there were still a bunch of bender triads shaking down non-benders and the police couldn't do much because at the end of the day they need enough evidence to hold on court. Same deal with real criminal organizations. So in a way Benders DID have power over the non-benders.

How would Amon have reacted to his post-bending utopia where non-benders like Varrick and the Earth Queen still take advantage of and exploit normal people? I can't help but think the next step would have been redistribution of wealth (but of course, not for high-ranking people within the Equalists like Hiroshi).

Fine not because it's dense. The dense part was mostly because it's pretty good against radioactivity but that's obviously not a thing in Avatar anway.
But I'm pretty sure that lead is kinda lacking what makes metal bendable in the first place.

With the explanation they gave (which was kind of a retcon) any sufficiently refined metal would lack that. As it is, we can only assume it's a property unique to platinum because pure mercury was still perfectly bendable.
>>

>How would Amon have reacted to his post-bending utopia where non-benders like Varrick and the Earth Queen still take advantage of and exploit normal people?

When describing AtLA and LoK villains, it's far more succinct just to assume the villain is driven by family issues, and mention it when we see the rare ones that aren't.

Zhao, Long Feng and Zaheer, in case you were wondering.
>>
>>1925895
I rest my case.

Just because he wants some form of equality doesn't make him an SJW. SJW isn't just a buzzword to throw around. They have a defined albeit loose set of goals and beliefs. There's no reason to believe Amon believes in any form of social justice just because he wants to remove bending.
>>
>>1925890
>With the explanation they gave (which was kind of a retcon) any sufficiently refined metal would lack that
Can we be sure they actually use refined metal? Might sound a bit weird but since metal benders are a thing maybe most metal isn't completely refined to make it convienient to bend if there's a need for it. Which is pretty much only in two places the case anyway: Zaofu a metal bender city, and Republic City which has a Metal bender police force.
Also did they ever bend Satomobiles?

>pure mercury was still perfectly bendable
Working on the assumption that shit was mercury and not some mumbo-jumbo they made up because Korra clearly hasn't gone full Caligula or Sun Quan.

Actually his goals are very much SJW goals using SJWesque terms (though appropriate to his setting). He's an SJW revolutionary, and the sympathies seen on left leaning parts of the internet for his character makes that clear.

>Makes you wonder how many went through with it though.

We had a discussion about that half a year ago. I remember wondering how many people may have even left Republic City after they were debended, perhaps returning to their ancestral homes and not knowing that the Avatar had the power to fix it.

Then I decided to be cruel and conceive some Fire Nation citizen having returned to the far west of the FN, who borrows the money to return to RC and passes within a mile of Korra on her way to the FN, stays in RC for weeks, and keeps just missing her and is unable to get an appointment because Raiko and Asami are eating up all her time. He finally tracks her down only to be not allowed to cross the police line. He waits patiently for the mob to disperse, only to learn the Avatar has been banished. Cue a mad chase across the EK where he tries to keep up with Asami's airship. He finally, finally tracks her down at the Northern Air Temple, just a day behind.

I don't think this hypothetical guy would have survived the three year wait.

Should stayed consistent with ther fluff, because if they can bend refined metal AND fucking mercury, then they can bend platinum too. There's nothing special about it that differentiates it from any of the others. Especially with fucking space rocks being bendable for metal benders.

wasn't the concept of metal bending that the "impurities" inside could be bent? I only watched LoK once so i could be wrong, but platium was supposedly so "pure" that they couldn't bend it.

ignoring the inconsistent rules of metalbending, why not just make hollow point bullets out of platinum seeing as it's common enough to build a giant fucking pacific rim robot out of. i think the bigger question is would a platinum gun withstand the pressure of the bullet being fired.

amon x firearms is the otp that never had a chance to fly.
>>
>>1926042
Platinum is only a bit more pure than Gold, Silver and Copper. And a little fun fact: pure metals are not exactly practical since they are too soft, brittle and react chemically. You don't need some special cutter to cut platinum and those dropped buildings should've already put a serious dent into the hull too.

Basically, they just wanted a magic metal for the Colossus that could resist bending but was also incredibly, ridiculously tough. But they'd already used platinum earlier in the series, so they were stuck with it.

So we have a situation where a speeding car can total mech made of platinum in Book One, but Korra throwing building sized rocks in Book Four doesn't even scrath the Colossus' exterior.

I guess Bataar really is a bigger genius than we all thought.

Not oldfag to that extent, but I never even watched a single episode of Avatar until Korra's predebut hype basically took over /ko/ in 2010.

Before it was cool to shit on yuri and lesbians in /a/ and /co/ as it was last year, /ko/ at the time naturally came to the nonconformist consensus that Korra was hard gay and alpha as fuck, but in a good way unrelated to SJWs, as they weren't a big deal then.

X-Arielle's and another artist's renditions had Korra paired with The Moon/Princess Yue early on, and everyone was completely apathetic to any of the three introduced male characters, setting the tone for equally complete and utter disappointment by the end of S1.

I had a drawfag make this in the hectic threads, noticing the bangs similarity with Korra and ZSSamus. I asked the drawfag to give her the Space Sword, but the initial draft had too small asses, had the gun way too close to the other's head, but did fulfill my request for outstanding trigger discipline.

Actually, I kinda feel like Amon is like a human character from the X-Men transplanted into a world where Mutants are the ones with political power rather than the arbitrarily hated minority in a world full of superheroes people DON'T build giant killbots for.

The equalists had a nice one-two punch in that there is the classist argument that benders have all the physical AND political power in most places through accident of birth paired with team normal people's usual problem with superpowers, the whole "your next door neighbor might snap one day and barbecue you, what are you going to do about it? Beat the guy who can shoot lightning from his hands with your fucking kitchen knife?"

I'm not saying Amon's actions were justified, I'm saying it would be very very easy for him to play on an animosity that would exist in any society that in any way resembled our own plus genetically selective magic.

>>1925891

I don't think Amon had an endgame. Taking RC was doable but it is basically impossible for him to have taken on the unified forces that would descend on him like the wrath of god afterwards. He might be ridiculously overpowered, but he can't be everywhere. The Equalists would have been slaughtered eventually, although they'd have been a bitch to take down.

Which is part of the reason I feel like it would've made some sense if Amon had been revealed to be Red Lotus, starting his doomed revolution in Republic City to take it and as much of the United Forces down with his followers as possible, weakening the world's defense force right as he is mistaken for a martyr by disgruntled normal people and kicks off a dozen smaller revolutions in unhappy areas like the Earth Kingdom.

It honestly would've felt a little more in keeping with Amon's actions than Unalaq being Red Lotus, but Unalaq was sort of a perfect storm of terrible writing.

>I feel sorry for everyone that was hyped as hell before the premiere. I watched it after hearing it was a huge disappointment and I loved it for the most part.

The premiere was fucking awesome, and it still holds up as by far and away the best ep of Book One. I don't know what's not to like about unless you either took an immediate dislike to Korra herself or were just whining because it was different from Avatar.

It's a bitter rewatch because of the wasted potential of the first season. All of that time, money, effort, talent - all pissed away on Mako.

>>1926173
>absolutely unauthorized

Adam pls.

Korra and Samus actually went in different directions for me. I loved Samus from Super and Prime; wished she'd get more exposure and attention. Then Nintendo put ZSS in Brawl, which made millions of people realise that Metroid was a girl. The porn increased a hundredfold. That was fine, Even if she looked like a cartoony supermodel now, she was still a badass. Then "you know what" was released. Since then, Samus has regressed into merely, as you say, fap/schlick fuel.

Korra otoh was someone I knew from fanart long before I watched the show, and thought her design was hot as hell. Eminently schlickable/fappable. Then I watched the show, and regretted my words and deeds.

It is absolutely vital to social justice in the Avatar world for guns to be invented and the right to bear arms be fervently protected.

I think When Extremes Meet is the best episode.

I enjoyed rewatching it as well. I was speaking of the entire season, not just the premiere.

It would seem someone at Nintendo shares your kink. Have a bimbo, on me.

>It honestly would've felt a little more in keeping with Amon's actions than Unalaq being Red Lotus, but Unalaq was sort of a perfect storm of terrible writing.

Book Three tried to redeem his character in some way. But it raises more questions that it answers.

He basically turned Ellen Ripley into a dull, compliant playboy bunny.
>>

I imagine he was hoping for Equalist revolutions to begin outside the URN once he started one.

The one season where they had a budget to do something and they used it on probending, love triangles, lumbering technology and not-Ty Lees who would only have a few months training defeating seasoned veterans, and moonless psychic bloodbending of which the bloodbending part just seemed to me to clash with the bloodbending episode from AtLA, it all hurts.
>>
>>1926212
The animation in book 1 is universally gorgeous and the Equalist fights were all really fun to watch.

>and not-Ty Lees who would only have a few months training defeating seasoned veterans
This is a dumb criticism when the name you're dropping involves a fourteen year old girl with not much more training doing the same thing. At least the Equalists are adults.

>I imagine he was hoping for Equalist revolutions to begin outside the URN once he started one.

Maybe in the EK. In the Water Tribes or the Fire Nation, such an uprising would have been dealt with swiftly and harshly.

Plus, they can smuggle all the weapons they want, but without the element of surprise Hiroshi's tech brought, backed by a trained small army and a near godlike being, the Equalists were never going to be as successful outside the URN. Did they even establish control of anywhere in the URN besides RC?
>>
>>1926216

Again, this is why I feel Amon's plan makes WAY more sense if he was Red Lotus and was setting up events that would allow his brothers and sisters across the world to make their move in the wake of the chaos he unleashed, but it seems like he was just an entirely unrelated revolutionary working to bring down the established order.
>>
>>1926216
>Maybe in the EK. In the Water Tribes or the Fire Nation, such an uprising would have been dealt with swiftly and harshly.
That's a huge part of the world under Equalist control.

>but without the element of surprise Hiroshi's tech brought, backed by a trained small army and a near godlike being, the Equalists were never going to be as successful outside the URN.
If things went to plan they'd have destroyed almost the entire United Forces Fleet. Power projection for much of the world's other powers would be shot. It's not unlikely that there was an Equalist presence in the militaries of various places too.

>Did they even establish control of anywhere in the URN besides RC?
No. Remember, the last few episodes all take place over a few days.

I mean, the USSR is a thing that happened.
>>
>>1926214
>This is a dumb criticism when the name you're dropping involves a fourteen year old girl with not much more training doing the same thing

And a thirteen year old bender with little experience had her number. Katara learned pretty quickly just to use her bending to keep Ty Lee from closing in.

You mean Beifong Skrillex. He's the one who fits that hard to please pallet. Toph doesn't want to talk and could never talk code, the worlds talks to her not her to it.

>That's a huge part of the world under Equalist control.

I said "IN" the EK, not the entire EK. The Dai Li still control Ba Sing Se at that point, and Su has her own grip on Zaofu. Across the rest of the EK, we saw just how defenceless entire cities were against small group of roving benders, who were only too eager to become outlaws. If those people felt they were the target of Equalist attacks, I don't think they'd have restricted themselves to reacting lawfully. They're only a danger to benders when they have the element of surprise.

>>1926220
>If things went to plan they'd have destroyed almost the entire United Forces Fleet.
Which just seems to be the URN's Navy. Unalaq and Izumi's fleets would be untouched. The latter would even have a personal reason to actually get involved.
>>
>>1926231
>What is ingenuity?
Something you can slap on to any implausible piece of writing as a bandaid.

She does nothing no other bender shouldn't have been able to do, save be the protagonist. If this kind of thing bothered you, it should have bothered you through the entire franchise.
>>

We saw it was ripe for a revolution. If Amon claimed to know how to make their situation better, he'd probably persuade a lot of these civilians and people forced to turn to banditry, not to mention provincial governors, EK soldiers, etc.

>Which just seems to be the URN's Navy.
It has Fire Nation nationals serving in it.

Unalaq might get involved, or might not. he's got other plans. His ships are as defenseless against air power as everyone else's, though.

But some of us are literally talking about and agreeing with each other that things are flawed.

Only Firebending: the PRIVILEGED bending.

URN was built on the backs of Earthbenders, don'tcha know? She also banned dressing like an Air Acolyte for Firewe'en, even if you are an actual Air Acolyte. Finally, it's a spirit-aggression to ask a dark skinned person which Water Tribe they're from. Just know that it's okay to be biased and bigoted to the privileged Northerners, but not to the oppressed Southerners.
