Tenzin does grow quite a lot throughout the series actually. He's very different in Book 4 than in Book 1. He quite visibly stopped trying (and failing) to pretend to be some weird idealized version of Aang that never existed and became his own man. A man that, incidentally, is quite a bit more like Korra than his father, in terms of temperament.

It's odd that out of all the cast, Bryke's attempt to give Korra a good old dose of parental issues fell flatter than Anne Heche's delivery.Anne Heche is great as Su. But some of her line readings really could have benefited from another take. "Can't you see she's brainwashed you?"

We settled on a cast, some of us decided on the good ending (Korra and Ikki returns to RC and the real Asami), some the In Water ending (yikes). So there wasn't a whole lot left to discuss.
I did enjoy the Silent Hill 3 story where Kuvira has Bataar Sr. murdered and Opal has to travel to Silent Hill for revenge.

It would have also shown that Kuvira was the type of person who would take things into her own hands. Aiwei was Su's most trusted advisor ("He was like family!" kek). Su wouldn't have entertained any suspicion against him, even from Lin or Korra. So we could see Kuvira taking initiative, going above Su's head, but also being one of the most heroic fighters against the Red Lotus, despite being outclassed. (The only reason Kuvira could have been on the far side of the mountain to rescue Tonraq is if she had decided herself to go help Korra.)

Maybe Bryke wanted Kuvira to come completely out of left field? Someone not even on the radar three years earlier "replaces" Korra as the EK's saviour. Remember that to Bryke, how important characterswith the exception of co-protagonist Bolinrelate to Korra is more significant than how they relate to anyone else. Even if her backstory with Su was rushed, what was important was that we got enough for Korra herself to eventually come to understand Kuvira's motivations.

This. Though it really didn't fit his streetsmart "play by my own rules" character to become a cop. Him being a cop, just like him being a a bodyguard, were excuses to give him screentime.I remember being giddy with excitement early in Book Three when it looked like he wasn't coming with the gang.
Book One Mako was Bryke airlifting in Ember Island Players Zuko (without the story), and expected us to take him seriously. I'm still shocked at that decision. Bryke had savagely mocked that type of character, and then made one without irony and shoved him down the audience's throats. It took the entire series run to justify his existence, and as much as I'm okay with Book Four Mako, it was not worth it.

Because I didn't begin watching LoK until late in Book Two, I had read The Promise before watching any of Korra, and was glad that I had done so. It's the only AtLA comic I'd recommend reading (even if the actual promise the title refers to is retarded).
