What are some common yuri archetypes? I need it for research purposes.
I can list the following off the top of my head:

Cool admirable tomboy who's actually a pervert/really into cute things.
Also girls who constantly think "but we're both girls" even after they're already dating

Only one of those you could call a uniquely yuri dynamic archetype is prince.
Ojou's just a rich girl, wealthy, connections, usually well-versed in traditional culture. Any fucking show has rich girls.
Now the prince can manifest in certain forms. There's the proto-butch, more androgynous type of girl, usually does horseback riding, fencing/kendo, sometimes archery(though that's usually ojou territory). Then sometimes it blends in with the tomboy. Less refined, rowdier, more interested in conventional sports like basketball, baseball, track and field being very popular. The power dynamic isn't usually as skewed as it is with the more conventionally knightly, gallant prince. The prince is manly, the tomboy is macho, though obviously they can all be quite girly in their own ways and often don't have an obviously male/androgynous appearance like Sailor Uranus or movie!Utena.
Now, we have an entire goddamn thread devoted to the onee-sama. Almost always older than her girlfriend, popular and well-respected on campus, maybe a troubled or even tragic past if you wanna get nuts old style, a great match for a more vulnerable tomboy, the viper to the prince's mongoose, is one of the most sexually aggressive yuri archetypes.
Now, on the other end of things, we have the freshman/new girl, often of a mundane middle class background. Will often be the POV protagonist. Kind and shy, often a little naive, will usually have a chance encounter and most of her free thoughts will be occupied by her love interest. Yumi from Marmite, Nagisa from Strawberry Panic, Nanami from SonoHana. That's your bread and butter. If they're a little more hotheaded and sociable you'll usually see type overlap with the more childish tomboy that gets paired with an onee-sama-type.
In series about older women she'll be the kind of girl that's new to sexual experiences with women and will often have a more sexually adventurous partner, who might be involved in the local LGBT community.

Honestly, there are much more situations that are common in yuri instead of typical character archetypes, since those are pretty much the same everywhere. Genki, student council president, brooding, tomboy, princess, regular-ass gal, etc., those are all in het and non romantic works.
Maybe it would be more fun to list the usual type of relations the appear on yuri. Like how "everyone fears her because she's so cool and handsome but she sub as fuck ner her gf" is overused as fuck.

This seems like a good enough thread to ask: how good is Sonohana and where should I start? There are apparently 15 games in the series but honestly I don't have enough time to read that many Chinese tv books. Or are they somewhat short? If I were to only play a few which would you recommend? Also, how is the anime?
On a similar note I still haven't seen Marimite. I know it's a classic but outside of it's historical value to the yuri genre how is it? Maybe this sounds bad but I'm not interested in being a cartoon lesbian historian, I just want to watch good shows. Does it move past subtext? And by subtext I mean even if they're as gay as Homura and Madoka do they explicitly kiss or date or enter an official relationship? If not that's be kind of a deal breaker for me honestly.

Marimite: MadoHomu ain't got shit on the girls, but there's only one kiss. It's still an excellent show with terrific characterization, the girls make it very, very enjoyable. If you like character driven shows I can only recommend it, but if you want openly lesbian girls doing openly lesbian things it's not worth it just for that.
