I understand their 'innocence' angle they're playing Ruby at. Despite being 15 she's the sort of kid archetype that just doesn't get written with romance in mind.
I could see them giving her romantic life some thought when she's older, if the show lasts long enough for the girls to get a few more years under their belt.

I think at least one of them do read Henceforward though, since they do follow Kuma's blog. She's kind of the biggest content producer in the fandom anyways, and her presence in the fandom is quite large as well.
I would not say I'm totally ok with Henceforward plot line, but it has many awesome moments and it pushes WR so it's still much superior to the show itself to me.

Going form a legitimately quite touching scene to that paralysed me with laughter.

Yang, even without her semblance, is probably the only tank in team RWBY, as well as being the heaviest hitter. Weiss, though probably the weakest in taking hits and dealing them, is the most diverse fighter thanks to her glyphs and mastery over dust and elements. Her fight in this episode alone has shown how much her abilities have grown since the Nevermore fight in V1, showing a serious growth in gravitational elements alone.

It would be an ok thing to do if Ruby actually did stuff pertaining to the main "plot" and the tournament gets sidelined in favor of her exploits, but this is M&K and M&K can't write to save their lives.
Ruby's non-favoritism is so deeply rooted into the story now, they'll never find a way to fix it, if they even give a shit.
They're trying to make it look like Ruby will face off with Cynder this season, the current big bad, no doubt due to the fact that tophat guy (can't remember his name) had more rivalry with Blake than Ruby the previous seasons. But instead of making Cynder be an independent antagonist working her own, much more grandiose angle, lo and behold, she's just a lackey to Adam, who, surprise, is once again a personal antagonist to Blake.

Ruby is absolutely the least capable fighter on the entire team.
Yang is significantly stronger, more experienced, generally better in combat and has a semblance well suited to matches like these.
Weiss is a similar damage output, more experienced, a better fighter, more tactical and has extremely strong magic allowing her to turn any given situation to her favor.
Blake is less strong in terms of outright damage, but is much, much more experienced than any of the others, is a very skilled fighter, and has a powerful 1v1 semblance.
Compare that to Ruby, who has less experience than everyone else, is not a very hard hitter, has a semblance of moderate usefulness within the confines of the small ring and unpredictable terrain, and has a fighting style more suited to fighting large amounts of weak enemies than a couple skilled, strong opponents.
They made the logical choice. The second I heard the doubles thing, I was really hoping RT wouldn't choose WR for it.
The best choice imo would have been Yang and Blake, not because I ship that, I can't stand the ship, but because they are the two with the most actual combat experience and the two whose skill sets are most suited for combat in a 2v2 or 1v1 situation against a strong opponent.

She's meant to be a socially awkward young teen who is gifted as a fighter and will surely become a very skilled huntress and/or prodigy. Which is exactly what she is. She's skipped years and been admitted into an extremely prestigious fighting school.
It's not that she sucks, is that there are a lot of people who are better. The whole point of the show is that the characters start off as dumb kids and grow, not that they start off as unbeatable monster slayers and continue to be unbeatable monster slayers.
There are so many issues with the show's writing, why do you girls complain about the stuff that makes sense?

On a more serious/less convoluted note, it is good thing Ruby isn't the strongest - granted, probably has the most destructive weapon in her year - because that allows growth. We can see Ruby become the strongest over the yearseven though the show won't last past v5 in /u/'s opinion.
However, we can't watch her grow if she never fights. Plus, most of the fighting Team RWBY did in v2 kinda made this situation hard to believe for some of the viewers.

They're pretty familiar with it. Kara (Weiss), and Lindsay (Ruby) aren't big fans of it, but Barbara (Yang) and Arryn (Blake) have fun with the audience being fans of Bumblebee.Also, not all fans want yuri, sadly. By all accounts, she shouldn't. The White Fang she left and the White Fang under Cinder are two different things. Blake refused to believe they'd be doing this sort of thing at first and even then tried to appeal to them. I don't necessarily think they hate it, it's just something they aren't really used to. Their most popular show has a total of 4, maybe 5 girls total, with one or two of them being main characters, and even then, their only main characters during their arcs.
RWBY, on the other hand, has 100000 girls in it, and are seeing another side to their fans that would creep most normies out, for lack of a better term. It appears to be, as very rarely do shows/movies/etc. do it well. It may not be complex to you, but perhaps to a straight person otherwise unfamiliar with being gay I think it might be a bit more complex than one would initially think. It's thinking from a perspective that is completely different to one's own (and yes, all love is the "same love" but because we live in a world that doesn't wholly treat it that way it really is a different perspective) which tends to be tough for writers, let alone the ones over at RT. They do fucking great with certain things, no doubt, but they are not the best with complexities of this nature.
