The bland loser isn't the mc. Yumeikoi is. If anything, Mary probably likes him but Yumeko is just an oblivious psycho who the artist draws as being very face grabby with girls. Her body language is similar to the student council president who seems to constantly be grabbing faces. Although the more sensitive side ponytail girl is loyal to the president, the president actually appears to be affectionate with her.

The girls returning back to their "former male suitors" by itself is already pretty bad, but with context, it's even worse. They were in a system where the guys literally owned girls and used them as weapons, with most of the girls being abused.
The reason the guys were forgiven were because they essentially said, "Everyone else was doing it. We actually felt bad. For realz." Despite the fact that the pages up to that point showed them sporting rapefaces and at some points, outright attempted to rape said girls.

Oh yeah, and IIRC, the manga and the guys also implied the girls were equally to blame for the situation and it was wrong for them to hate the guys that abused them.

Neither Yuki nor Koharu ended up with any guys and even after the wedding they say they're not giving up on Sora. The others I don't remember, but I'm pretty sure neither Reiko or Hiyo were interested in her in the first place.
Not saying it wasn't bullshit how the story began - but considering how it began, and the fact that from the beginning it seemed like Haruka was meant to be one of Sora's partners - it seems like this was an example of editor/publisher meddling. Maybe the (I'm guessing mostly male) readers didn't like how the guys were represented in the story.
It's weird because Prunus Girl was running at the same time and you had a lesbian side couple and a main couple of a guy and a transgender girl. Everyone expected the end to reveal Aikawa as really female, but they left it open.

It's interesting manga, and while there's solid /u/ moments, you can make a good case for /het/ as well.

Don't get why it starts off with some guy who seems to have been set up as MC when it's pretty clear Yumeko is and he's pretty much the same as what's his name in Saki. Hell, Johnny McGeneric pretty much disappears during the blind man's bluff game.

At the start of the manga Mary clearly likes him. She treated him like trash but in a tsundere sort of way and got jealous when he got close to anyone else.
