Why people liked this anime? It was all angst, angst and more angst, without barely any happy moment between the protagonists. It has good fanart, that's true.

Honestly, the relentless melodrama was part of the charm for me, and it's been a bitch trying to find an anime or manga that makes me feel, really feel, as KnM did. Maybe I just have bad luck searching, Iunno.

What makes this anime so good for me is the confession scene near the end where they're fighting. Chikane's monologue and then after she gets stabbed. Such a blatant showcase of yuri. It's so raw. No subtlety whatsoever. I remember when I first watched this and being so surprised that Himeko felt the same way in the end. That the girl actually got the girl. Yeah the rape on first look is abit hard to accept or understand, and if you're butt hurt over crappy mecha then whatever is important to you. But solely for the yuri, it's one of my faves.

I got it on the first try; Chikane was trying her best to make Himeko hate her, and decided to go full nuclear in order to do so. Too bad (and by that I mean good) Himeko saw right through it and/or loved Chikane too much for the plan to succeed.
The mecha bits WERE shitty though, full agreement there.

KnM basically did a straight up romance story against the backdrop of AN ANCIENT EVIL HAS AWAKENED plot. It's as standard as it gets and that makes it fucking amazing.
Most of the blatant yuri we have are slice of life or in minor characters only. Even shows like Simoun had to add the somewhat annoying aspect of Everyone is a grill until they jump in a pool.
Valkyrie Drive might be the only worthy successor that has been missing in ten years.

Yes thank you. This is exactly why I love this anime. There's no bullshitting or roundabout obscure yuri going on. The way Chikane talks about the way she wants to love Himeko speaks for itself.
I'm also hoping on Valkyrie Drive to give us all what we want. Finally some unapologetic, explicit yuri.

It was deeper in the manga. Chikane expected Himeko to hate her enough to choose to rebirth the world where Chikane didn't exist and freeing Himeko from being involved with the orochi.

What do I do if all of my friends who are into anime pretty much exclusively watch either mecha shonen or deep seinen, and I'm the only one who watches anything girly ever? I just get so depressed when I don't have anybody to talk to about KNM, or Sound Euphonium, or Princess Jellyfish, or Shirobako, or whatever my favorite shojo/josei of the month is. It's just so lonely not having any girlfriends. :(
