Im not the dude you replied too but that is pretty much the same feelings i got from the show. Is it the best thing ever made? No. Is it 100% original? No. But they did do a good job of mixing in a bunch of established character modes and made a pretty damn good story of their own. I really dug the soundtrack too. Real Tron Legacy vibe from it.
Netflix hasnt truely passed HBO but god damn they are getting closer and closer each year that its only a matter of time before they catch them and maybe pass them. Those will be great years for us though. As far as plot goes there's not been anything truly original for more than 100 years. Novels tried to create more original characters by having them be more detailed, by writings novel that were just long internal monologues of introspection with the plot being secondary. Look how glacially paced GoT is despite having a large cast, huge budget and no advertisers to appease. I'd rather writers say what they need to say in as much time as they think they need. Short books still existed after War and Peace was made, and short tv shows should still be made even after MASH proved you could make a show last forever

It's a homage to Stephen King and Spielberg. Lots of 80s tropes and camp. It's not anything you haven't seen before but the set design, costuming, music and pacing are great. Winona Ryder makes a small comeback albeit by chewing some scenery here and there. It's worth at least one viewing. But you won't like it if you think 80s movies are corny.

I think that had something to do with the sludge that was being left behind initially by the monster and by El unknowingly.
I remember the CIA is investigating Joyce's shed and there's that sludge dripping down the wall but I don't remember what came of it.
I don;t know if it's an inconsistency, the CIA gathered it and used it on the main portal, or maybe something else but I'm pretty sure the monster was making portals wherever the fuck it pleased and they took time to close on their own or had residual effects.
