This is pretty gewd

The finale was quite meh, but 1-7 was pretty kino.
Eleven dies
>>72128074
she didn't tho
Alien looks like a huge vagina, toothless boy gets eaten.
No it's not.
>muh nostalgia
>synthpop
>every character is a walking trope
I mean cmon, there's nothing original going on here. Bunch of nerdy kids bullied by cool kids, older sister who's dating a jerk, single mom desperate to make end meet, a cop who's lost a loved one. Like did they just pick the top 10 archetypes of american tv & movie characters, slap on a scifi plot and make it happen in the 80's to please 20-somethings with nostalgia boners?
>>72128144
And yet it's still better than 95% of the shows on tv.
what happen to eleven was she kill
>>72128144
I found the 80's style to be very refreshing. There wasn't any coon tunes, and nobody was pulling out a smart phone every 30 seconds.
>>72127972
The final scene was great. Can't wait for S02.
For the love of God, What ethnicity is the sister?
She doesn't match the rest of the family and it's bugging me.

What the fuck are you talking about you dumb nigger?

Why won't the nigger just fucking go along with the group.
Why does he have to argue and complain all the time?
Can't the kids just work together and be friends?

Good morning friendo.
>>72128144
This 100%.
I feel like I'm going crazy seeing everyone call this show amazing. The only exceptional aspect of the show is that the child actors are good. Everything else about the show is just decent or mediocre.
I even saw some anon say that this show proves "Netflix is the new HBO" yesterday. What the fuck is going on? Is it shills?
>>72128144
>I mean cmon
Jimmy pls
Lol Eleven isn't dead you fools, that was literally the whole point of Hopper leaving eggos in the woods
>>72129385
It's not a spectacular work of art or anything, it's just a really fun show in a time where television is basically dead.
>>72129385

It's you Anon. It's you.

>"Bad guy is killed by monster" wow how original
>"Character at the center of the problem sacrifices herself... BUT IS SHE REALLY GONE???"

It was clichetown by the book all around and it didn't feel deserved
>>72129581
To answer you question, you are the problem, not the show. It's been you all along.
I hope this makes things a little clearer going forward.
>>72129604
Why are you lying?
>>72129667
Do you understand what the expression "I'm the last person to X" means?
>>72129681
That doesn't help clear things up at all. You might as well not have responded.
>>72128074
she is super alive, didn't you see hopper leaving her eggos?
>>72129440
Im not the dude you replied too but that is pretty much the same feelings i got from the show. Is it the best thing ever made? No. Is it 100% original? No. But they did do a good job of mixing in a bunch of established character modes and made a pretty damn good story of their own. I really dug the soundtrack too. Real Tron Legacy vibe from it.
Netflix hasnt truely passed HBO but god damn they are getting closer and closer each year that its only a matter of time before they catch them and maybe pass them. Those will be great years for us though. Except some quality shows to be spit out (of course lots of shit shows will come, you know the copy cat shows trying to jump on someones else thunder) when they go to war over who makes the best shows/movies.
>>72128116

Lmao look at this faggot posting an unoriginal post calling something else unoriginal
Fucking irony
I just finished watching as well. Very strong 9.5/10.
>>72127993
Finale was awesome. Slingshot scene. Dustin screeching about pudding. Elevens scenes.
My only grip is how Steven could kick the Monsters ass pre fire but a shower of bullets did nothing. Almost all of the Steven stuff was weak imo.
Also how is Eleven not kill. Hoppers scene didnt mean much.
>>72129906
>Also how is Eleven not kill. Hoppers scene didnt mean much.
Eggos = Eleven, pretty basic storytelling
>>72129906
All I wanted was for Elle to eat the pudding. ;-;
>>72129906
I just wish the cg was better. The first scene with Shepard going through the portal looked super shitty, almost like I had a version with unfinished assets.
The flying van was pretty shitty too. They're on a budget so its only fair, but if the continue this I would hope the can allocate a bigger budget to it.
>girl goes back to chad
shit I should've see it coming
>>72130103
They spent their entire budget on absolutely nailing the 80s hair.

y'know unoriginality isn't always a flaw, the execution of the entire show was damn near perfect apart from the bad cgi in the last episode
>>72127972
I think the 80s style and are direction were great. I thought it was going to to go full retard at the end like Super 8 but it only halfway did that.
Overall I enjoyed the hell out of it. I just wish that it would have ended with season 1 because I feel like this show is going to pull a true detective and have a garbage second season
Everything is edgy, gritty, tryhard today and it's fucking played out and boring the throwback to the lighthearted 80's tropes was refreshing.
>>72131243

As far as plot goes there's not been anything truly original for more than 100 years. Novels tried to create more original characters by having them be more detailed, by writings novel that were just long internal monologues of introspection with the plot being secondary. This doesn't fit with movies though.

>television should be a friend simulator that goes on forever instead of about telling a long form story to completion
The trend of moving towards anthology series and miniseries is the best thing to happen to American tv. There's nothing to be gained from forcing writers to pad out more hours of content and leave everything open ended for a possible new season, then be told they're cancelled and need to wrap things up after years of building to nothing.

I have nothing against long term character development, but few shows use it well. I don't like the way length is imposed on tv writers where they need to fill up to a dozen hours of content a year, invariably leading to filler, stretching content, repetition, losing focus, losing cast and crew over time etc. There are few to no shows that don't decline in quality as they go on and are only ended after the point of no return
Most stories don't need 30-60 hours to be told.

Firestarter and It.
Travis ruins the entire dynamic of the kids friendship though.

I think she made the wrong decision but Steve basically redeemed himself in my opinion by how he tried to make amends with John and how he risked his life to save them from the Demigorgon
>>72136709
>This is caused by advertising
Advertising is what makes shows go seasons overlong, but I still find that the extra length given to television writing is flaw more than anything. Look how glacially paced GoT is despite having a large cast, huge budget and no advertisers to appease. They're still padding out every episode with bullshit that has no purpose but to fill 52 minutes a week.
I'd rather writers say what they need to say in as much time as they think they need. Short books still existed after War and Peace was made, and short tv shows should still be made even after MASH proved you could make a show last forever
>I think netflix has the ability to make multi season content without filler.
I have yet to see it then.
>>72136718
Akira, down to giving these super powered government engineered kids with uncontrollable powers numbers for names
>>72136880
>I have no problem with them aging.
They can't do a season 2 taking place right after season 1 where the kids are all visibly older.
Anthology format makes perfect sense and it'll be a welcome change for this show to no longer have the dark industrial synthesizer soundtrack which has more to do with 80s-inspired videogames than the 80s itself.

>>72137014
>They can't do a season 2 taking place right after season 1
Why would they have to make it take place right after s1? They're obviously at a point where many things are resolved and the only real source of conflict will be Will coping with giving birth to alien slugs.

At that age they could easily grow a couple of inches and have more mature faces in the span of a year. They're in Middle School right? That's when most people have their growth spurts.

>>72137114
Not really, I don't know who did the psychic kids thing first but Carrie and Akira are the best ones, most everything else since is derivative of those two
>>72137143
Well the show skipped a couple of months right at the end and showed christmas time, so next season is going to be the next year. I don't see how a few inches would change anything.
>>72136981
There was probably a lot of fighting with Netflix just to make this show 8 episodes long instead of fucking 12 or something.
>>72137014
>which has more to do with 80s-inspired videogames than the 80s itself
Terminator, Escape From New York, Near Dark, Thief
Ever watched a 80s film?
Was anyone else bothered by at the last episode, Jon, Nancy, and Steve stop the monster by using a bear trap, one .38 revolver, and a fucking nail bat. But dozens of armed men spraying submachine-guns into the monster did fuck-all? I thought that the presence of blood strengthened it but I dunno man.
>>72128144
Yes...thats why it's set in the 80's. The entire series is a homage to the 80's horror/ sci fi ( even the fucking title font is a homage to Stephen King ) Once i realized this, i just went with it and had fun.
Watching 'Stranger Things' is like revisiting one of your favorite restaurant you haven't been to in years...and the food still taste great.
>>72137214
They didn't stop it at all. They just fucked it's shit up enough to make it back off. Which was mostly the fire.
>>72137214
Acshually, what they did at the house was trap the monster and then burn it. That's what really took it down.
Just shooting doesn't have much effect.

This. The only real problem would be leaving the 80s. The one thing I would think would be cool to mix it up would be for them to move towns at one point. Like go to Montauk, where they originally wanted to set it.
I don't care that it's half It half Elfen Lied, I just want the fucking nosebleeds to stop. Once was fine but *every* time she uses her powers.

Just watched the first episode. Really want to like it but I don't know, it all just feels so manufactured, like there's no soul behind it, just some executives deciding they wanna ride the 80s wave before the IT remake comes out.

There isn't. It's just a competently made by-the-book show.
How does one make a monster that's scary to look at and doesn't lose all of it's scare once it's in clear view?
>>72137793
It's a homage to Stephen King and Spielberg. Lots of 80s tropes and camp. It's not anything you haven't seen before but the set design, costuming, music and pacing are great. Winona Ryder makes a small comeback albeit by chewing some scenery here and there. It's worth at least one viewing. But you won't like it if you think 80s movies are corny.
>>72137835

>older sister who's dating a jerk
How is he a jerk? He's actually portrayed as nice and caring, the worst thing he did was not stopping his shitty friends from painting, but he pretty much instantly felt guilty and went to fix it. I don't consider breaking a camera of a guy who took pictures of your gf undressing a bad thing.
Older brother on the other hand, was a fucking creep. Dude was literally sitting in the bushes taking pictures, never said sorry for it and when she confronted him went on LE EDGY tirade about her never living the town, etc. Boo-hoo, teenage girl had fun with her friend and had one can of beer. I fucking hated him and i'm glad that she stayed with the jock.
>mike never even got a photo of El
I would have prefered if they made a movie instead. More budget for the special effects that were kinda bad.
>>72137987
>mortal wimp boy pronounced dead but really wasting away in the upside-down is alive but Psychic weapon wunderkind who traverses dimensions is dead
Not likely
>>72138040
Removing 3/4 of the story would be enormously detrimental. It was perfect in 8 episodes.
>>72138040
Yeah, I think the CGI was the worst part of the show. I be if they had spent more time making it better or switched to non-shit practical effects then it would be considered timeless.
>>72128144
>theres nothing original going on
its like you completely missed the part about a monster from an alternate dimension kidnapping children. And a girl who has the ability to transcend space and time with her mind.
I hate people who dismiss everything just to cherry pick what suits their garbage argument.
>>72138040
>>72138112
>muh graphics

Is there a lot of child acting in it? I'm about 3 minutes in and if there's lots of children in it I don't want to commit
The kids were obnoxious, the main kid and the girl were ok but I hated the fatty and the nigger.
>>72138112
>>72138040
I felt like that most of the budget was spent on the sets and making the world look so authentic and period-correct.
>>72138051
Entirely different cases. El was on the brink of death minutes before from overusing her power to kill all those people and then had to use even more to kill the monster. She should be dead.
>>72138040
yep, the bad monster effects were a huge letdown. but if they wanted to copy king then this was a given. so 10/10 if intenionally bad.
>>72138186

>>72138177
huh, on that point he's completely right.
>>72138245
I get where you're coming from, i'm just saying a world in which Will is alive, miraculously, allows for other such miracles, like El's survival. If he made it, she likely did too.
>>72138197
yes.
This should be an anthology with the same exact production team.
The first seasons story has been told and should be frozen in amber for eternity.
Adding anything else to the story will just ruin it.
>t. When J. J. gets hired for season 2 and retcons the whole thing.
>>72138254
>>72138258
Not that anon but this is such an autistic way to view media. The CGI was fine, especially on a tv budget. If you watch it to look for flaws like "HA, thought they can get that passed me, huh!? Nope, I can tell it's not a real monster but CGI! Wheres my tendies!?" You're doing it wrong.
>>72138312
Fuck. Children ruin everything. I have maybe seen one or two performances by kids in my entire life that weren't distracting to the point they disrupted my enjoyment of the show/movie
>>72138177
I can't believe you think any of that is original or interesting.

Now that the monsters dead the government can double down on their spying efforts and enter the portal as much as they want.
Why wasn't the bear trap visible in upside down town?
>>72138382
so we are not allowed to call out bad cgi in television? because criticizing something on a movie and tv board is autistic?
you really got me thinking.
Why did portals in trees keep randomly opening even though the monster doesn't need a portal to travel.
Why did the monster keep making portals through moms house walls even though it didn't need a portal?

It's got a midget American in it too, who sounds like he's getting bummed everytime he talks.
>>72139090
I think that had something to do with the sludge that was being left behind initially by the monster and by El unknowingly.
I remember the CIA is investigating Joyce's shed and there's that sludge dripping down the wall but I don't remember what came of it.
I don;t know if it's an inconsistency, the CIA gathered it and used it on the main portal, or maybe something else but I'm pretty sure the monster was making portals wherever the fuck it pleased and they took time to close on their own or had residual effects.
>>72138855
