What did Vernon do that was so terrible exactly? He decided to take Harry in like someone hiding jews from the nazis and in response Harry causes all sorts of mischief but still he cares for him and looks after him despite the risk to his family. He tries to teach him to behave, toughen him up to face the real world and get him to stop acting like an aspy so he can be a part of things, yet each time Harry rejects and rebukes him. Vernon reaches out and Harry bites, Vernon gets mad though still he keeps reaching out, it is kind of sad. Even when evil wizards were literally on their way to torture him and he had to flee his own home he keeps his cool.
>>
>>72113941

The dullest franchise in the history of movie franchises. Each episode following the boy wizard and his pals from Hogwarts Academy as they fight assorted villains has been indistinguishable from the others. Aside from the gloomy imagery, the seriesüf only consistency has been its lack of excitement and ineffective use of special effects, all to make magic unmagical, to make action seem inert.

Perhaps the die was cast when Rowling vetoed the idea of Spielberg directing the series; she made sure the series would never be mistaken for a work of art that meant anything to anybody?just ridiculously profitable cross-promotion for her books. The Harry Potter series might be anti-Christian (or not), but itüfs certainly the anti-James Bond series in its refusal of wonder, beauty and excitement. No one wants to face that fact. Now, thankfully, they no longer have to.

>a-at least the books are g-g-good though
"No!"
The writing is dreadful; the book was terrible. As I read, I noticed that every time a character went for a walk, the author wrote instead that the character "stretched his legs."

I began marking on the back of an envelope every time that phrase was repeated. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. Rowling's mind is so governed by cliches and dead metaphors that she has no other style of writing. Later I read a lavish, loving review of Harry Potter by the same Stephen King. He wrote something to the effect of, "If these kids are reading Harry Potter at 11 or 12, then when they get older they will go on to read Stephen King." And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you read "Harry Potter" you are, in fact, trained to read Stephen King
>>
>>72113941
>He tries to teach him to behave, toughen him up to face the real world
That was obviously not his motive since he allowed Dudley to become a spoiled little shit. He just didn't care about Harry and was only raising him out of a sense of obligation, which I guess merits some gratitude. I mean, he's not a monster, but he's far from parent of the year.

It's taboo for anybody to use Avada Kedavra under any circumstances whatsoever.

As for the giant snake, it's probably the same reason they have a tree that murders anybody who gets close to it, a forest full of giant man-eating spiders, and a dangerous poltergeist on school grounds. And how about that popular team sport where you're pretty much garunteed to break your neck if you fall off a broom?

So here's a thought.

In the fifth book everyone kinda hates Harry because they think he's making everything up about Voldy. Soooooo why doesn't Harry just put the memory inside a Pensieve so everyone from the Ministry can see the resurrection of Voldy for themselves??
>>
>>72122569
Nope.

Read it again.

Moody/Crouch straight up says the words aren't enough, you need power and conviction behind them. He says they could all point their wands at him and say the words for the killing curse and he wouldn't even get a nosebleed.

Hell they demonstrate that when Harry tries to use crucio on Bellatrix and it doesn't work, it just knocks her over.

>>
>>72122665
I don't think it's a great idea to start chucking everyone's memories into the pensieve. Dumbledore keeps the few memories from other people separate and he had heard everything that happened from Harry anyway.
>>
Why did the ghosts that go through walls not find the hidden chamber?
>>
>>72122656
Ok.

Say you're a mighty wizard who solves everything with a wave of his wand.

Suddenly you can't use your wand to solve it, you have to solve a logic riddle instead.

Suddenly, you're boned because you spent your life using magic and not your logic centre.

Hermione literally points out that most wizards haven't an ounce of logic.

Because not just anyone can brew that, for starters, so unless you're 100% certain it's correctly done the information can't even be trusted.
Even then, it's not foolproof. Someone prepared for it can take measures.

It might not have even existed back during the trials shown anyway, it might be a more recent truth potion. The wolf bane potion is a recent invention in the books too, so it's not out of the question.
>>
>>72122810
Really now.

What the flying fuck with up with the Goblet of Fire movie? Was it made on acid?

Everyone acts like a complete lunatic in the film, everyone's hair is out of control, the books' most complex plot is rendered nonsensical by the cut up script, and the pacing is just all over the place.

It's the weirdest movie of the series by far.

Seriously, the obstacle course was clearly designed to allow anyone through so long as they were competent first years or better, as opposed to only allowing authorized people. The traps were just distractions I'd imagine. The true protection was that it was hidden in Hogwarts, guarded by Dumbledore, greatest wizard of all time.

Remember Quirrell had to distract Dumbledore away from the school before he even attempted the steal. Most likely they just stuck that other shit in there to deter and slow any potential thieves down.
>>
>>72122902
I blame the director.

It's the only film in the series he did, and none of the other films are batshit insane like that, so he's the common denominator.

The plot being slashed to shit is down to the screenwriter, but apparently they had seriously considered splitting the film in two (this was before doing two part films for adaptations was a thing) before of how long it was, but ultimately they decided to compress it instead.

To be fair, they had no idea how she would age, or that she would even be the love interest when they first casted Philosopher Stone.
>>
>>72122983
To be fair to them, they cast her as a little kid in 2000, when she only appeared briefly in the first film, and they never recast her.

Plus it wasn't made clear in the books that she grew up to be hot until the sixth book, released in 2005 after three of the movies were already out.

Dangers of starting film adaptations before the books are finished.

speaking of Quidditch. you'd think there'd be dedicated catchers for each game in case anyone fell. Magically slowing down the fall of whoever would fall off. that's their job maybe?

But no. Instead they just have to hope that Madam Pomfrey would be able to magically mend a fatal spine injury or ruptured organs with some potion thing.

Then say you mend a kid into perfect health. What about the traumatic experience? Experiencing the pain of falling 100 + feet , being a twisted broken suffering shadow of a human, sliding into the great beyond, and then somehow surviving would ruin the kid mentally.

I know what it is because I've read the book, but never in the whole climax do they ever actually clearly say "Peter Pettigrew was the Potter's keeper instead of Sirius, he betrayed them and framed Sirius then faked his death".

yea they are meant to be standalone or complementary to the books, surely a very big chunk of the audience did read the book.

they should have added something about padfoot and prongs and mooney and wormtail and explained it but its all implied. the shreiking shack scene was pretty well done considering how much explanations were in the book, you get the jist that pettigrew was the one who betrayed harrys parents and sirirus was wrongly accused

yea man its directed poorly and the adaptation is sketchy. theres good parts and i enjoy it still but it not as good as the others to me. newell really isnt subtle and he made the tournament a gladiator match even moreso than wizard olympics. great climax though (the shining maze fits the film) and moody was a standout. yates and cuarons are much better. maybe 1=4. but its all subjective.

Like the way they went back and saved buckbeak and sirius. All that stuff already happened the first time around, they just didn't know it.

Hermione can't suddenly decide to go back in time to 2 days and kill lord voldemort, because for that to happen, he must have already died 2 days ago.

Yea for 10 11 year olds i thought they were decent enough though, i acrually though watson was pretty good especially being stereotypical hermione. they definitely improved with the direction of cuaron and then again with yates though.

nice ranking. for some reason i think hbp is one of the best its a dreary dreamlike tonal masterpiece. the castle engulfing the characters in times of stress. people dong like the adaptation but for a film its really good. yates really came in and put his foot down in the series which it needed. i though ootp was a commemorate job for a debut.

Idk how old she is in the books/story compared to them but not that much older after its all said and, only a couple months. If she was time traveling for 1 school year during the school week she would age about a little over a day extra every week (i think the time turner is only effective 5-6hhours a use). how many weeks on their school year i dont know. But it provides she aged two months or more her 18th bday (and all of them) comes sooner.

at least i domt think it would be 9-12 months. unless she was older to begin with. in the movies shes younger but they are all the same age roughly to start.
>>
>>72127813
they didnt want to boggle down the films with extra exposition that could fuck up the climaxes or pacing. granted they could have thrown in a couple crazy limes to explain stuff, nut they took to making the emotions flow and show for the characters properly, mostly the trio and them in the end dumbledore and snape

Well what the flying fuck the prophecy was for starters. DD shows the whole thing, where he heard it and what it means in the book, in the film, you heard like half of one line and that's it.

I know OOTP was cut to shit though, the first version they cut was 3 hours long and they cut almost an hour out for the final version, to the point that it's the shortest film of the series (not counting DH Part 1) for the longest book.

>>72128122
its not a plothole you dont understand the basic nature of the time turning in the film. see the novikov self consistency principle. it fits with the themes of harrys past present and future in the book and film and it goes along with the plot of buckbesk never dying and why harry cats a such a powerful patronus.

honestly the dilm is one of the best representations of time travel and it melds with the story. if you did get the time travel and you have another issue

yep they are really stupid.

plus the time turner being given to hermione to take extra classes, such powerful object to a booknerd is British humor oremost. the wizards would really do something like that because the brits are insane
>>
>>72127821
Well, in the books she was caught by Ron having 3 classes at once.

So lets say classes run for 8 hours a day, for 5 days a week, for a standard 40 week school year, she would have added 200 days to her school year, which is around 6 months

So I was wrong with 9-12, but at a theoretical maximum, she would have lived an extra 6 months that year.

Also on top of that, it's unlikely it was to that extent because she would have been exhausted living a single day 3 times over without sleep, unless she used the time turner to also sleep and rest.

>Well what the flying fuck the prophecy was for starters.
i just watched it the other day. harry hears a good bit of it. he hears it for at least 15 seconds or so and it says about the one who will have power to vsnquish the dark lord, that he will be created as his equal ajd neither can live while the other survives. it explained fine by my sights and harry and Dumbledore discuss it more after the minsitry

>I know OOTP was cut to shit though, the first version they cut was 3 hours long and they cut almost an hour out for the final version, to the point that it's the shortest film of the series (not counting DH Part 1) for the longest book.
yea ive seem some of the deleted scenes and they wouldnt have added anything but a lot was cut indeed. i think the pacing is good though. the only bit im mad about is the brain scene because they filmed it but cut it, but it wouldnt have fit tone wise with the climax. a three hour film still would leave stuff out as not all extra stuff would be important. and it might not be as good and tight as a little over 2 hour film
>>
Ironically once Harry left the Dursleys he became more and more of a spoiled and arrogant little shit as he got older. He also never really learned about hard work because almost everyone in the wizarding world was constantly fellating him and he was Dumbledore's favorite. Everything always fell into his lap without any effort of his own and he was always arrogant and condescending about it.

Meanwhile they mentioned that Dudley eventually started working out and became more mellow.
>>
>>72128425
They never released much of the cut footage for OOTP, only like a couple of tiny deleted scenes. I know they cut a lot out of the Department of Mysteries (which sucks because the spooky as hell rooms in the books were the best part of OOTP) and the climax in general.

I found OOTP very choppy watching it, always like there's bits missing here and there. It needed to be at least twenty minutes longer.

>>72128454

Why are you even trying
>>
>Dursleys
>abusive

He was fed, he was clothed, they didn't beat him. On his birthdays and Christmas he got gifts even if it was just clothes and shit. Eventually he got to move into Dudley's old room and even got some video games.

They never treated him like their own, but he could have been a lot worse off.
>>
>>72128356
3 classes at once wouldnt be happening all the time though. she would only use the turner for 5-6 hours a day. thats why im low balling it.odk of their school day is 8 hours including breakfast and such or 6 hours of class time.

yea she would have been very exhausted. extremely. if she used the time turner to sleep and rest she would have been aging even more.

3-4 months sounds about right. thats a lot for their schedule

I thought the editor did a good job with the theatrical cut. he did all of yates films. of course i would want more especially in the ministry. shame i liked how yates was shooting everything inside the ministry at the end.

i didnt find it choppy but it moves along briskly once they get to school
>>
>>72128549
Sorry I forgot to mention that 6 month was what I thought the maximum would be

Obviously she wouldn't be in 3 classes for the entire day.

A reasonable assumption maybe would be like you said, 2-4 months

if you are going to use kino at least realize what it represents. goblet has a mishmash of tone with standard cinematography and weird directing. sure it has a crazy atmosphere because newell is a maniac its consistent but thst doesnt mean its a better film or better kinos than cuarons or yates

YOU JUST KNOW Mike Newell was a fucking wildman on set running around shouting, flailing his arms, slapping children on the arses and harassing the DP. YOU JUST KNOW

No it doesnt man you dont appreciate filmmaking if you say with a straight face that azkaban isnt as good as goblet.

Even ootp btfo goblet. fiennes is better. the trio is better. everything is better it looks better especially and actually has a semblance of craft and style that isnt IN YOUR FACE like newell was from the getgo (example his malick boot shot)

implying the weasleys wouldn't simply reject any money he gave them out of pride. seriously why would harry want to treat them like a charity case?

also the twins got rich with their business and continued to do so after the war. they made enough to buy expensive dragon skin suits within a couple months of opening which is ridiculous profit from a start up joke shop.

ron became an auror which is a high pay job. and he married hermoine, the best wizard ever since Dumbledore she's only going to make more money

percy was a politician another high pay job,

charlie was that other one who trained dragons, probably also high pay.

ginny married harry so she gets half his shit anyways

with only one man working in the house they managed to pay the bills and clothe and feed 6 kids and harry, once their kids move out theyll have alot more money.

the only person who met the snake and had time to actually have a chance to fight it was harry, everyone else got paralysed the moment they saw it.

harry didnt even know of the killing curse therefore couldnt have used it

the killing curse requires skill and hate. you have to seriouslly focus hate against the thing you wanna kill. harry didnt hate the snake he was shit scared of it so even if he said the words nothin would happen.

2- because the wizarding world is inherently dangerous. if wizards took the same ideas on safety as muggles theyd all never use magic ever and act like us.

also nobody knew that the basilisk was down there, it was just an old legend. and the legend only said "a monster" nothing specific. they never even found the chamber til harry did.

3-its a medieval castle that is very very big, old and nobody even knows all of its secrets, nobody wants to go renovating it for fear of accidentally setting off a centuries old curse. besides the plumbing must work so why change it?
