Dick Withman is the opposite of the american dream. He is a vulnerable, self loathing, destroyed man who takes on the role of Don Draper, an oppurtunistic, hard working, genius, alpha businessman with a family and a smokin wife. This all becomes much more apparent in the later seasons. Just keep watching
