I actually think Hateful 8 is QT's best work since Jackie Brown. It's still horribly flawed because of his ego, but it's a much more nuanced way of depicting race relations than Django Unchained (fun-ish but overlong and kind of shitty). Unlike that film, Hateful 8 is about two total opposites (black guy who hates Confederates, and ex-Confederate racist) realizing that they must stop hating each other and fight the true evil present in their world, and I think it does a really good job of carrying that central theme. It's just so much other shit in the film really drags it down.

Yeah, I liked it for that reason as well. I thought Inglorious Basterds was almost incredible at depicting historiographical details, however. IB and Django were both basically vengeance movies, however, like Kill Bill but less stylistic and more thematic. I think it might be a little unfair to look at DU in the lens you do, but understandable given the subject matter.

I think I exaggerated my dislike for Django, I do think it is a decent movie with some really fantastic moments and performances, it just succumbs to Quentin's ego a little too much. I also just don't really like Jamie Foxx. I like Basterds well enough for pretty much the same reasons as Django, but I feel like both of them lack depth. True of most of QT's work, although I was glad to see Hateful 8 mostly turn that around.

Jackie Brown and H8 both deliver on the depth, I agree. I think Pulp Fiction is like a study in style, also, with some of the best acted and written dialogue scenes of all time.

That's my problem with Pulp Fiction, I really think it is a great film but it is fairly empty in terms of actual thematic content. He knows it, I mean it's in the title, and there are some themes in there with honor and whatnot in the watch story, but I still have small problems overcoming my own admiration of the film. Similar with Reservoir Dogs but I can accept that I like RD more easily for some reason. I like parts of Kill Bill, never really loved it though

RD is really meh to me. Which is kinda sad because in retrospect it's probably his second-most controlled film that he made. I should like it more but it lacks the flair I've come to expect. I like how shocked I am by QT movies.
