Gandalf should have been portrayed as a villain. He isn't fighting for what is right- an extremely nebulous notion given the greater story-line- he's fighting an old foe from many wars before, a foe that was once his brother. Gandalf is playing every side to get what he wants. Lee's character is just doing what he always did, trying to maintain the old way of things. That old way being what happened after the really big wars decided a thousand years at least before. Gandalf is a loose cannon. He invented the Time of Men just to spike his old adversaries.

Yea, I also thought Vigo's depiction of Aragorn was too wishy washy. He seemed overly distraught and confused most of the time. I get that they were trying to emphasize his character development for the mass audience, but imo it would have been cooler if he just was more kingly from the get-go, as in the books, instead of trying to make him into a more typical protagonist.

Gandalf is portrayed largely portrayed as a kind, benevolent old man most of the time. In the books he was much more of a crabby old fart of a wizard, who had a heart of gold that only shone through from time to time. I prefer the stricter, meaner portrayal of Gandalf.
