Faith is like a defense mechanism so that when the idea of our lives not mattering becomes increasingly apparent, we have something to explain it, rather than just give up. Those of us however who grew out of faith, or didn't bother with it in the first place, found other things to fill our lives with meaning; we still know that in the end, nothing matters (inb4 linkin edge), but within the context of our lifespan, we can make a positive difference to others around us. This is why religious people are irritating, because their 'good deeds' derive from brown-nosing a deity, rather than genuine good-will for others.

How can you explain animals having religious rites without communicating with them so that they can explain that the ceremony they are doing is religious in nature. If one man sees another praying or doing other religious ceremony how can he know that those actions indicate of religion if the other person doesn't understand your language. If you see someone doing a ritualistic action you cant automatically assume that that action is religious in nature. Same for animals, just because you see them doing ritualistic actions doesn't prove that they have a concept of religion.
