Not being released in China is bad for the "GB Cinematic Universe" they're wanting to make, but I'm not sure it'll bomb. Films that bomb are films nobody is talking about... And everybody is talking about GB 2016

Right. You've completely left out world wide marketing for the movie, and that's not cheap. Even as a bare minimum it's estimated that the marketing for this movie was approximately 75-100 million.

They would need to make, atleast, 350+ million to make a profit.

You do know Sony spent $400 million. That's FOUR, ZERO, ZERO MILLION. promoting Angry Rids right? Imagine how big the Ghostbusters ad budget was for the amount of shilling being done.

Assuming it's around $300 million for the ad budget at the bare minimum, it would need to make at least $500 million to even consider breaking even. (that includes all the other costs that are kept under the books)

I find it hard to believe that people still think $1 at the box office means 1$ for the studios. There are a lot of moving parts there that people don't know about.

Before I left to get a real job, I worked as a manager overseeing about 40 theatres along the east coast. The theatre chain negotiates the contracts for % of payouts when it comes to domestic releases on a studio basis, but there is wiggle room. It can be as high as 90%, but Ive also seen it as low as 50%. Not surprisingly, Sony Pictures was the lowest in the 4ish years I was there. I never saw them take more then 70%, while Disney took 90% no matter what.

I'm not longer there, but my theory with GB's and Sony is they are hoping for a franchise, new cartoons, video games, merch, etc. to come out of this, and launch a bunch of sequels. I don't see that being a reality though.

Then you would know that every movie is different pending on the studio. 50% is the average over the run of a typical movie. Higher percentages come from blockbusters. You would also know that the House Nut cuts into it even more in most cases, had you ever worked at one.

If you even worked a day of your life in business you would also understand the gross and profit are not synonyms.

But you haven't, and you're making up shit on the internet due to your insecurity.

The Amy Pascal debacle was when I knew Sony was doomed.

She is clinically insane, damaged a ton of actor relations, and Sony's response was to set her up elsewhere in the company producing such projects as Ghostbusters, The Barbie Movie, The Emoji Movie and Spider-Man: Homecoming.

She even bought the rights to Zoe Quinn's Gamergate memoir.

Honestly, I can see this making a lot of money from older women.

>There's next to no marketing for this movie

Germanon here. Confirmed for my city: Three big cinemas right next to each other. No marketing whatsoever save for one (1) A2 poster with the updated logo and "coming soon: 4th of August" written on a piece of paper taped over it.

People still ask me whether I'm going to see it, anyway, because I happen to have a GB patch on my jacket.

Actual conversation I had with a guide (sort of wimpy looking fella in his late 20s just like me) while visiting a museum last month:
>Cool patch
Thanks.
>So, you gonna see it?
See what?
>The new movie
Don't think I'll enjoy it, I'll pass.
>Well, it DOES have an AWL FEE MEL KUST [he actually said it in English, so it sounded exactly like this]. That's very PRUGGREZZIF [same here]

By now I smell a reddit, but keep my composure.

Look dude, it's not about the women. I'm just majorly underwhelmed by the humour presented in the trailers.
>You're gonna pirate it though, won't you?
Nah! Maybe when it's on some streaming service, for free.
>Oh. Well gotta get on with the tour now.
>>
>>71956579
The only area its tracking highly for advanced tickets is for older women, but that usually has to do with older people planning their trips to the cinema in advance. The Secret Life of Pets is going to do very well alongside it, then the following week Ice Age and Star Trek are released, so its going to be tough.
>>
>>71956651
I'm in the UK and I saw an ad during the Yuros, they paid for a trending topic and I've seen some posters in city centre.

So there's definitely some advertising, but it's certainly not wall-to-wall like something like Secret Life of Pets.
>>
>>71954259

>I also wouldn't be surprised if "feminists" are flooding it with praise simply because of the female leads even though they haven't actually seen it yet.

This is already happening.

Look at Rotten Tomatoes.
Nearly every positive review cites how "important" this movie is for its GURL POWER message before lavishing praise on it for how supposedly funny the fart-jokes are.
>>
>>71956637
I don't think its just Sony, its just Sony has a series of high profile failures attached to projects that should have done very well (Spider-Man, twice) and the email leaks gave us insight into what exactly is going on behind closed doors.
>>
>>71956705
Ice Age (in the US anyway) and Star Trek aren't going to do jack shit though. I can also see Secret Life of Pets falling off once people realise it's shit.
>>
God I hope it bombs. The last laugh for their "positive" reviews...
>>
>>71953711

>>
>>71953636
Also don't expect it to do well in latin america or russia where ghostbusters are still a semi obscure 80s reference and feminism is not a selling point.
>>
>>71956774
>once people realise it's shit.

Which is what should happen with Ghostbusters within a day or two.
>>
>>71956736
Weirdly enough, the cinema I was talking about has had cardboard cutouts of the Pets characters out for several months, standing right in the middle of the entrance hall. Progressivebusters has a little spot on the wall off to the side next to the till. It's the only frame on that side of the room.
>>
>>71956774
>Ice Age (in the US anyway) and Star Trek aren't going to do jack shit though
Lol what? Even if they both flop, they will be taking money out of Ghost-busters 2nd week.
>>
>>71956761
Ehhh, the only difference between Sony and every other big company is that Sony had their e-mail leaks that exposed how incompetent their management is. It's not ike Fox and Disney don't have high-profile bombs too
>>
>>71956774
They'll do well enough to be serious competition. Star Trek will attract the hardcore nerd base who might have come to see the reboot and families will choose ice age over girl power. Ghostbusters might be in legitimate trouble.

All it has to do is NOT be a hit.

Sony has been circling the drain for the past 4 or 5 years, with sales of the PS4 being one of the only things that has saved them.
They are COUNTING on this Ghostbusters shit being a MASSIVE hit that saves their company with a mult-film franchise and merchandise sales on par with something like The Avengers.

Video Games = "entertainment" sensibility = autism.

This is predominantly an art board (the "entertainment" shit that is constantly being discussed here is a result of crossposters from pleb boards like /co/ and /v/)

True cinema = art which is the opposite to autism and in turn the opposite to video games.

The sensibilities resulting in video game appreciation are diametrically opposed to the appreciation of cinema as "art". Videogames/autism/"entertainment" are the reason for capeshit.

Ah, they're paraphrasing this Variety article:
http://variety.com/2016/film/news/ghostbusters-china-release-rejected-1201813649/
>“Ghostbusters” is unlikely to score a release in China, sources confirm to Variety.

>It’s bad news for the $144 million comedy, which needs to do well globally to make back its hefty budget. Though “Ghostbusters” hasn’t officially been screened for Chinese officials, its subject matter will likely run afoul of the country’s censors, according to an insider. The state-controlled film board does not approve of films that promote cults or superstitious beliefs. In the past, movies that focus on the paranormal, such as last fall’s “Crimson Peak,” have been unable to secure a berth in the country.

>To try to assuage censors, Sony has cooked up a new title for “Ghostbusters” — it’s now known as “Super Power Dare-to-Die Team.”

But big budget CGI does. China is #2 in worldwide box office, you can't downplay this.

>It's got great word of mouth. Most people who have seen it enjoyed it. The people bashing it have never watched it.

All the word of mouth has been about the reviews, not the film itself. People are arguing over an RT score, not whether or not the film is good.

>Normal people don't pre-order movie tickets.

When a film is in demand, yes, they do. Especially in the 30+ year old crowd and with the advent of reserved seating.

>The movie will break even and the sequels will be even bigger and build on that because they don't have to go through the origin story or be tied down by the original movie

This movie needs at least 450 million dollars to break even, and probably close to 600 million to see any sort of sequel. The general rule is two times budget to break even, three times to see any sort of continuation. On the low, low end, Sony is probably in this thing for around 250 million with production and marketing. Sony doesn't know what the fuck they are doing.

I am going to use the following term unironically, Are you fucking kidding me?

A list actors command fucking huge sums of money. I mean when Robert Downey Jr. made Iron Man a massive success they had to decide between replacing him with a cheaper actor for the sequels so they could put more of the budget into special effects.

As for a director, you have to be at the top or be buddies with the producers to command anything $15 mil or higher and that's usually because they get a percentage of the profit.
