I always thought that scene was supposed to be a metaphor for confronting a horrible truth that you'd rather avoid.

Like, the whole movie is this weird fantasy thing that Diane concocts after having Camilla killed about the way she wished her life and turned out, and then she opens the blue box and faces reality.
