What else is a King? It's no different than our presidents and prime ministers. It's an icon with the illusion of power. Renly would've been an icon for the Seven Kingdoms, and he would've had the sense AND the allies to build a council around him to run Westeros.

He's the only other leader besides Stannis that cares about the Walkers.
