Not really but there's more than one type of a heist movie. It's a realistic one with by far the best shoot out sequence in the history of cinema (nothing will ever come closer).

That fucking scene where pachino is talking to his "wife" and it goesfrom a medium shot that pulls into a closeup as all this drama in his life is coming to a head. He hangs up the phone andbefore he can catch his breath it reverses to this flat shot of his partner and the hostages staring at him.
That is one of the most immersive scenes in film history. So subtle, just this slow boil that sucks you in.

Yeah I like Collateral a lot too but some of it just feels kind of ludicrous. It's gorgeously shot though but that's basically the expectation with Mann.
I think the opening 30-40 minutes of Ali and the the last 45 minutes or so are a couple of the best stretches of Mann's career. That midsection is a little flabby but its best scenes are absolutely remarkable. I think it'll undergo a bit of a critical reevaluation now that Ali has died. It didn't receive a proper response when it was released.
