That's probably the case, in effect. Azor Ahai, the prince that was promised, the last hero, these all amount to the same thing, a person who is prophesied to fight the Others. Jon and Dany will both occupy that role. I think both really are destined to do it (the prophesies are usually correct), but I think it will be ironically be after they turn away from their own desires and the roles they thought they wanted (king/queen, Stark/Targaryen) and focus instead on the War. They will become those heroes by choosing not to pursue that narrative.
It's the same for Stannis. He comes out of the gate telling people he's king and therefore people should kneel to him, and he has Melisandre on his shoulder telling him he is god and deserves all. But over time he comes to understand it doesn't matter what he deserves. His goal stops being "become the king" and changes to "act like the king." Jon and Dany will pick up that evolution by realizing they don't need to be king at all, they just need to do what's right. Is my guess.

Jon's journey toward great heroism is a slow build with an endgame twist, and grinding it out in humble obscurity until then is fundamental to his story. It seems a reasonable enough backstory, it's a shame they never thought to use it overly much in the show itself. They could've gone out of their way to have Talia appeal to her family in Volantis to try and get support for Robb by having her sail off, only for Robb to get Red Wedding'd and then have her get roped into the Danerys plotline involving Volantis.
But I suppose that quality of writing would be too much to ask of D&D.

I guess one could make the argument that the show is accurate in a metaphoric sense - like King Ragnar playing with the idea of christianity. As a rough sketch, it works. Here's my problem with this series, the whole premise of Roger's rebellion is unbelievable. And before somebody says, "Oh, so you're ok with dragons and magic but a love story is unimaginable," it's not a contradiction, because you have to accept some premises with this show including dragons and magic. You suspend disbelief when you see Danarias riding Drogor because you accepted that dragons are in the show, and it's built consistently into the world that there are dragons. HOWEVER, what's not a premise of the fantasy world is that men will endanger their entire dynasty and go to war over a woman they haven't even met.
But for some reason, Dragar Starkarien kidnapps Leanna, and then Roger Barthareon rides to WAR over it??? That's not part of the premise of this story, and I don't see why Roger would start a war over a girl he was betrothed to but hadn't met.
