Spiderman's success really set in motion the ability for film-makers to use lesser known characters for films.
Before spiderman you could really only use the really big heroes like Superman and Batman, now any movie starring literally who can be a hit because audiences are just more open to that now.

All the big studios had movies in the pipeline, ready to go at a moment's notice, just waiting for the first big hit to arrive.
Meanwhile Marvel, strapped for cash, is whoring itself out to any studio that will pay a few shekels for their characters. So throughout the 90s, Marvel had just been throwing shit at the wall and seeing what stuck. Fantastic Four, Hulk, Blade, everything was shitty until X-Men became an unexpected hit.
And it wasn't great. But it was just good enough to convince the studios that they can start cashing in on their superheros.

Most of the adaptations were sort of timeless and with batman especially seemed to be set in an alternate past.

Disagree. Dark Knight was probably where "re-imagining" characters came from, e.g. the Joker as portrayed in the Dark Knight isn't really the Joker. I think it lead to more grimdark shit generally and also just ill thought out shit (e.g. Eisenberg as Luthor).

X men came first in 2000, Spider-Man was arguably the better movie, but what it all boils down to is a concept called "Pre-awareness" meaning that the intellectual property that serves as the basis for the movie already has an established fan base and most studios would cite the beginning of that with the Harry Potter series. Now fucking ANYTHING that people already know about is fair game to turn into a movie: Trolls, Tetris, Legos, Angry Birds, etc.
