So yeah, only once before has it ever been this short. The good news is that the episodes are longer now. That format sheet seems to suggest there'll be 8 battles per episode (2 Groups, 6 round robin and a final) which is 24 minutes of battles if they actually play them all through and don't use highlights reels. 50% battles and 50% other stuff is a pretty good ratio imo and way way better than the American show which is full of talking.

I was there for the filming of the first episode, in Glasgow. Dara did seem like he was really into it, made an effort on stage and talking to the roboteers backstage. It was a shit show though, about three and a half hours of sitting around and cheering for the camera for six minutes total of actual robots. Got a cool look around the warehouse though, saw in the walled off area where they prepped and maintained the house bots, got some IN THE PIT foam fingers to take home.

It definitely is. Seeing it live was one of those things I really wanted to do as a kid, couldn't pass up the opportunity to actually do it when I saw them advertising. Tickets were free, so I can't complain too much, glad I did it just to say that I did but wouldn't go again. Definitely looking forward to seeing it back on TV though.
