I'm sure his performance will be good as he is indeed a good actor and has been putting effort on the role.

It did have an impact actually. He spent 30 days in a hotel room alone, creating and writing a daily "joker" diary. He made sure to speak to no one and stayed in the room so he could lose his mind and help get into the character, and his insomnia got worse from it.
Obviously the sleeping pills he was taking and insomnia was a thing before hand, but the preparation/method acting for the role worsened it and partly contributed to his death.

For me it was the opposite. I kept hearing about how the role was so legendary and I never bought it. But, if I had seen the movie without hearing the hype id probably be sucking ledger's rotting corpse dick right now for that performance. It was amazing because he was able to be very controlling and ominous without the use of soundtracks adding tension. It was also a role that was completely the opposite of his real personality and he was able to do it without overdoing it(leto). In summary, it was elegant in a demented but captivating way.
