90's Oscar bait movie tropes don't really hold up. Maybe in another 10 years it will become kitsch, but I recently just rewatched it and it was painfully silly.
If you don't see it, go rewatch Father of the Bride and imagine that movie coming out today. There's just a certain 90's aesthetic that's been done to death and seems absurd now, and it hasn't been long enough for it to have gotten to the point where it's so bad it's become good again.

I don't know what kind of feeling you got from Shawshank redemption but the movies from this year that I liked the most are Everybody Wants Some and Knight Of Cups, there are more good movies but they are more genre oriented
I've actually watched it yesterday after ages. It still holds up. The film is well-done in literally every aspect they were going for. The acting, the cinematography, the music, the story, the overall direction, the film fires on all cylinders. The ending, again, had me choked up. It's a bit overrated, sure, but does it deliver and then some? You bet.

Never saw the movie, until a month ago, really liked it, comfy prison drama. Certainly better than most prison dramas and especially comedies that has come after.
